Our daughter was recruited to play on the volleyball team and received both an athletic scholarship and academic scholarship. The process of onboarding has been very pleasant and the school has been very helpful. The location and campus is beautiful. The freshman dorms can use a little tender loving care to improve the appearance but not enough to deduct considering all of the other amazing qualities such as the staff and student leaders. It is very apparent that this school cares greatly about their students and offers many services to help them. read more

This college is a huge waste of money. We just pulled my daughter out after being there for a month. Avery, the girls dorm should be shut down and repaired before allowing students to live here. My daughter experienced carbon monoxide poisoning on August 30th, was hospitalized and received oxygen treatments for carbon monoxide poisoning along with 70 other girls. The school denied the gas leak even though these girls showed signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. I have tried to get in contact with Dr. King and his assistant just takes messages and I never get a call back. Stay away from this school and do not let your child go here! read more

I graduated from LMC in 2012, and absolutely loved every second I was at the school. As long as you are a good student and the professors can see you trying to do well, they will bend over backwards to help you in anyway possible. I worked 3 Jobs while attending LMC, had a double Major and a double Minor. Life was hectic, and I struggled allot, however all my professors knew my situation and were great about giving me the resources I needed to succeed. The best thing LMC taught me was how to think. How to question the "Facts" that I am given and draw my own conclusions, instead of taking everything at face value. This lesson alone was worth every dime, every late night, and every struggle I faced. Six years after graduating I have a great life, great job, and make a great living. And I can honestly say I do not think my life would have turned out quite the same way if I had chosen another college. read more

Lees-Mcrae is a beautiful campus with a love for its students and staff. If you're deciding whether or not to come here then remember if your more of a stay in your dorm person then this College is not for you. There are several things that this school does that is not in the best interest of the student nor making sure that every student is accommodated. This school does have amazing professors, a great student body and an intense love for its community. To start off with the food. The food is often bland, greasy, unhealthy and often stale or old. The salad bar sits out all day in the sunlight and is rarely changed from what I have seen. The food is often labeled as seasoned but listed as only seasoned with salt. Any attempt to try and be healthy or have healthy options other than salad is almost non-existent. If you have any type of food allergy such as Celiac Disease or just regular gluten intolerance you are basically straight out of luck. As someone who has a father with a Gluten Allergy, I feel compelled to talk about how there needs to be multiple options for them and for them to be able to have warm food that is good. Along with that you can often ask students at the beginning of the year about the food and most will tell you that they have stomach issues with the food. The hours on the weekends are horrible and if your only access to food is through the cafe and you miss dinner then you are completely out of luck. The next thing is the dorms. The dorms honestly give a home type feel to them like when you go to your grandmas house and see the wood paneling from the 70's. They're not horrible and theres definitely worse dorms but often enough the dorms have a series of problems or things in them that make you wonder if they are actually up to code (Which to clarify I am in no way certified in Building inspection or know the codes by heart) but having open fan blades such as in the trash room in Tate, The flooding that occurs during heavy rains also in Tate, Only one dorm having a water fountain, and Water heaters constantly breaking are some things that make you concerned. Not to downplay the schools role in upkeep or the hard work done by the staff to make sure we have a safe place to live but theres often a feel of the bare minimum being done. The professors here are often extremely talented but as with all colleges you will find the handful that are just bottom of the barrel. Most will work closely with you to ensure that you understand and comprehend the material. Most often professors become like friends that you can reach out to for help with school work. The safety on this campus is amazing. Being in such a small community and especially on a campus of less than a thousand people everyone knows everyone and it creates a safe feeling and a mostly crime free campus other than the bears that like to chill out on campus. The security is often lacking and are more concerned with giving out overly expensive parking tickets even for a first offense. If something goes missing or is stolen its basically impossible to get them to take the time out of their day to check the cameras. When a backpack with a computer in it went missing, showing up to the office and confronting the on-duty security guard and asking them to check the cameras was only met with excuses on why they couldn't. It was only found because the person who took it thought the backpack was forgotten by its owner and meant to give it back. Overall the campus is a good campus but it needs some serious repairs and revamping. If you want to find a campus that takes nature and wildlife preservation seriously then Lees-McRae is your campus. Also this place is the best if you wanna see some amazing dogs. read more

Lees-McRae collage has been wonderful for my daughter. We decided to send her here because of the intimate relationship the school seemed to have with the students. My daughter has fantastic teachers who care about her and her success, the student services are phenomenal, and the administration seem to be on top of their game. It is expensive but the scholarships help balance out the costs and ultimately it turned out to be less expensive than state tuition. Overall a great experience. read more

This school is horrendous and I am going to write in length just why that is the case. If I can sway just one person from attending Lees McRae then I have done some good in the world. I was recruited by LMC in the fall of 2013, just months before finishing my AAS in Human Services at a local community college. At that time I had been informed by Bo Bennett and Fabienne Dellinger (the dept. head and a recruiter that work there) that the cost of tuition was only $5500 for an entire year and that as online students we got a reduced tuition. At that time I was leaning towards Mars Hill for my BSW (bachelor of social work, the more sought after degree). After receiving in June of last year what I thought to be a healthy financial aid package of $23,450- which included an array of grants, loans and scholarships- I ultimately chose Lees McRae. I knew at the time I was almost out of financial aid so this seemed the best option. I would get a decent refund that would help me out while I finished. Not out of the realm of possibilities because I have gotten healthy returns from other schools before. I only found out a week or two before classes started that Lees McRae was not $5500 but rather $23,450. The "out of pocket costs" are $5500, but the entire amount you get in financial aid goes to the school. The entire $23,450 went to the school leaving me nothing for books or a laptop or anything else I needed. Not only was I mislead about the cost, but ultimately chose the lesser of the two degrees based on the misinformation. I will have a human services degree rather than the more sought after BSW. This degree just may turn out to be useless. I have had several friends look at the financial aid information too, including one friend who has done work as an accountant. All of the have stated that the information is "confusing". Not only this but the other schools I had been considering in the end turned out to be CHEAPER than LMC. Now on to the curriculum. In one of my classes last year I had a class called Personal and Professional Identity. The Personal and Professional identity class professor was teaching this "new age" approach when working with clients. Learning about a bunch of new age nonsense that has not been taught or embraced by mainstream psychology caused me some serious concerns. When I see people like Louise Hay being touted as professionals in the field of psychology or human services, I have to speak up. These people promote new age ideals and quackery and their methods are not science based, nor have many of their claims (Louise Hay's miraculously being cured of cancer for instance) been verified. As someone paying $23,000 a year for school, at this point I began questioning the quality of education at Lees McRae. I contacted the dept. head and the dean was basically ignored. Onto other issues. Considering the cost of Lees McRae you would think they would have a helpful student services department to help students with whatever issues they have. However they don't. They have nothing and do nothing for their students no matter what issue you are dealing with. In addition to being underemployed I was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. My financial situation is grim at the moment. My computer, which I desperately needed to attend classes broke. I contacted Lees McRae to see if they had any assistance in helping me get the one I have fixed. The answer was no, they don't have student services of any kind. No emergency fund, no nothing. I took 2 classes at University of Phoenix a few years ago and they were more helpful and more in the way of helping students that Lees McRae has ever had. Truly a travesty when you consider how much they are charging the students to be there. I did without books my second semester because I didn't have the money to get them. Somehow I made it out of the classes with a B, how I still don't know. If I can sway just one person from going to this school then I have done some good. Please consider the many other options in the area including Mars Hill, Western, and UNCA. read more
