I was really disappointed with our experience at San Diego Surf School. My husband and I booked a…read morebeginner surf lesson because we had never surfed before and wanted to learn the fundamentals from a professional instructor. Unfortunately, that isn't what we received. Our instructor told us he was just visiting from out of town, and it felt like he wasn't prepared or invested in teaching. To start he was late, when he did show up we received very little instruction before going into the water and were never taught many of the basic skills that beginners should learn, including proper paddling technique, how to pop up on the board, or even how to safely fall off the board. As beginners, that was especially concerning because safety should be the top priority. Once we were in the water, we were practically left on our own. Instead of receiving coaching, corrections, or guidance throughout the lesson, we were left trying to figure everything out ourselves. We paid for a surf lesson, not just a board rental. After the lesson, I reached out to the owner to explain our experience. To their credit, they responded promptly and admitted that our lesson was not taught according to their beginner curriculum. They explained that beginner lessons are supposed to include ocean safety, surf etiquette, how to safely fall, paddling technique, popping up, and active coaching throughout the lesson, all of the things we expected but didn't receive. However, the resolution they offered was only 50% off another lesson. While I appreciate the acknowledgment that our lesson fell below their standards, I don't think it's reasonable to ask customers to pay again even at a discount to receive the instruction they already paid for the first time. They also mentioned that they couldn't offer a complimentary lesson because they wanted to ensure their instructors were fairly compensated. As a customer, I believe it's just as important that clients receive the quality of service they paid for. We chose this school because of its great reputation, which made this experience even more disappointing. Hopefully this was an isolated incident, but I think future beginners should know that our experience was far from the comprehensive lesson that was advertised.

Our instructor Luca met us at the beach right on time after giving us clear directions at the shop when we picked up our wetsuits. He provided detailed instructions and guidance on the sand before we got in the water, which made everything a lot less intimidating for beginners. We all had a great time during the lesson and highly recommend this business to anyone wanting to try surfing while visiting San Diego.

I booked a two hour private lesson with Surf Menehune and this was such a blast. I had never…read moresurfed before, so was a little nervous at first. My instructor, Patrick, was great. We spent some time at first going over safety, then practiced popping up. Then we hit the water. This time was great, learning how to paddle out, controlling the board, picking out a wave, and paddling and catching the wave. It took several tries, but I got up - what a rush. I've never experienced anything like it, and I'm hooked. My recommendation: if you are comfortable in the ocean then give it a try. Rent the wetsuit - for the additional $5 its worth it.

He did half day surf camp for three days. 9-12. I took the days off work to be with him and watch. They provide wetsuits, so helpful. The Surf teachers were all so attentive and I felt safe having him there. It was 4 teachers for 11 kids. I loved hearing the teachers surf lingo. And just hanging out for the mornings with the kids and surf friends. Teachers did a morning stretch and then got them out on the water. My son was catching waves right away. Mid-day they had snack break and made sure to reapply sunscreen. Last day they had a pizza party at the surf shack for all the girls and boys. I walked in, filled out the paperwork that took 3 minutes (bring your DL!). He saw me click redeem the coupon and then I was on my way! It include a paddle and the board. It was pretty light, made from foam. To get to the beach, walked across the street and an alley (about less than a quarter mile) and off we go! The boards returned with a bit of sand. On arrival, I was handed a standard board and told it was wide. It was not. The bigger issue was the instructor, Rich, who is also listed as an owner of Surfari. His behavior throughout the lesson was inappropriate and made the experience genuinely uncomfortable. He asked questions about my relationship and loyalty to my boyfriend, made repeated comments that were flirtatious in nature, touched the tattoo on my back without asking, and used physical contact that was unnecessary and unwelcome (such as hand on thigh to guide me through the water). He is an owner, which means there is no one to flag this to and no accountability mechanism once you are in the water which made it worse. The surf instruction itself was a secondary concern, but it was also poor. Very little time was spent focused on technique, and the session lacked any structure. I am writing this specifically so other women know what to expect. The positive reviews drew me in. The reality was the opposite. I would not return and cannot recommend this school.

The locations is right near the beach so we can take the dogs for a walk while he learns to code and socialize with likeminded kids his age.
