Located in a shopping plaza, Lwapin Lizards has been located here for a long time, years! First started coming here in the early 2000's. Ample parking and clear signage. Leapin has clearly marked sections to making it easier to find what you are looking for easier. They carry a wide variety of mediums from crystals to books to incense. Jewelry both made locally as well as from afar. The woman who assisted seemed a little awkward when asking for help. Could not make eye contact nor would she stay with me to answer any questions. She went from her chair behind the counter, pointed out the table with jewelry walking away from me to the bookshelf where she started to browse the books. The only thing I could think of was she was looking for a crystal book to assist? She did not though. I selected a gorgeous honey Amber necklace and three bracelets, next stones. If you've never been here before you learn that the stones call YOU. I have many examples of this happening to me and today was no exception. Then over to the incense area for a few boxes to stock up the house. I spent over $100 which seemed to make the woman happy, she had to do the bare minimum to make this sale. I do miss the women who've worked here who jump in and ask if they can help, stay available for any questions and are super happy you came in. Maybe she was having an off day, don't we all. On the minus side the variety once offered is no longer the case, seems like the whole thing has been scaled back considerably. I will now have to make my way up to the Freeport location and see what if anything has changed there. Happy they are still in our community. read more

I didn't know how the Portland Leapin' Lizards would be compared to the location in Freeport, but I appreciated and liked it just the same! It's much bigger than the Freeport locale so their stock is much more spread out and personally I think that makes it easier to visually digest (seriously, there's a lot going on here!). The crystal/rock selection seemed more ample here, and they also had a wall dedicated to dried herbs. The staff was also super welcoming, friendly, and engaging. I had questions about crystals and their herbal counterpart, and one of the amazing women behind the counter spent some time going through a bunch of books with me to see if anything might reveal itself to us. Also, the prices make me so happy! When it comes to things like this, I'd much rather go somewhere that I can touch and smell the thing I'm buying (to see if it resonates with me), as opposed to doing it sight unseen. It helps when the staff is so obviously invested, interested, and educated in what they're selling too! read more

This store used to be a staple of Portland; I used to go in multiple times a month to purchase chakra candles that came in a glass jar. I love them, they don't make a mess, they burn for so long, and I have not seen them in the store since the ownership changed. I used to spend so much time and money in this shop and be so excited to go and browse and there is no longer the quality types of product available. Hour have also changed- never see the owners in there, and can never get there because hours of operation are so slim. Very disappointed in the new ownership and turn this store has taken. read more

So rude! I stopped by to get something on the spur of the moment. A tibetan singing bowl is going to be incorporated into my grandmother's funeral, and I already knew this store carries them and I happened to be in the plaza this store is in a few days before the service. I thought it would be nice to pick one up for my aunt who just lost her mother and has had to take care of all the arrangements, because since she has someone using one at the service I figure they must have meaning for her. When I walked in, the woman behind the counter was chatting with another woman, which is pretty typical at this store. I found the tibetan bowls on my own, because they were right by the door, but the selection was small and I wanted to ask if they had more, so I walked back toward the counter. I waited until she noticed me, and as soon as she spoke to me I could tell this woman has terrible energy. When she asked, "how are you" I just gave her a pat response of "good thanks, how are you" because from the get-go I could tell she's the type who it wouldn't be safe to open up to her. She was very interrupty while I tried to ask a few questions about the bowls, so once she said that was all they had I said I'd go over and look at them on my own. She followed me over anyway, which was fine, so I asked a couple follow up questions about the specific bowls. I saw one I liked, so I tried it out. Now, it usually takes a minute to get these vibrating, but she GRABBED IT OUT OF MY HAND and told me to tap it with the dowel. Granted, the vibrations from the sound are what matter, so you can do that if all else fails, but it's not the proper way to use them and I wanted to make sure I got one that vibrated easily because this was going to be a special gift for my aunt. Now there are two types of dowels that come with these bowls: plain wood or wood with one end wrapped in suede. In my experience the ones with suede get a better sound. So after she grabbed it from me and demonstrated the half-assed way to use it, I saw that there was one of the suede wrapped dowels in another bowl, so I picked it up and said "sometimes these work better." She wouldn't give the bowl back to me and told me that one didn't come with that bowl, which is bs because at other stores you can mix and match and it's no problem. The one wrapped in suede was used and grungy so it wasn't anything special. I asked if I could swap it out and she said "No!" very curtly. It was like she practically spat the word at me. At that point I was done putting up with this awful woman's insensitivity so I just walked out the door. I don't plan on going back, even when I'm feeling better and not grieving the loss of a close relative. Having a bad attitude isn't ok in any customer service position, but it's even worse in this case. People tend to turn to this type of mystical mumbo-jumbo when they are in crisis, and there's an expectation of sensitivity for people working in that type of store. read more

After being verbally assaulted at a competitor's store in Brunswick today, I traveled to Portland to Leapin' Lizards. I have been to this shop two times. The first time I purchased some tarot cards and today I purchased a shamanic rattle and a malachite heart. I was greeted with love by the cashier. They even have a loyalty program through which you get 5% off once you've spent (I think) $200. I have also been to the Freeport store, but I do like this one better. I think their prices are very fair. read more
