What is La Lou's secret? We have been dining at La Lou for over 25 years, it is our "Go-To"…read morelocation for all our little special occasions. You are welcomed so warmly by the staff, always helpful but NEVER intrusive. Honestly makes you feel like you are at a Louisiana local neighbourhood Chow-Down, as friend not a patron. Love that about La Lou. Last night's dinner started with a Hurricane, for me and a spicy Caesar for my partner. The Hurricane was delicious, a perfect blend of fruit juices and rum, I could drink these and nothing else, for the rest of my life. My partner reported the Caesar was perfect, from the mix to the spicy bean garnish. Our appetizers were Hush Puppies (of course) and Crab Cakes. The Hush Puppies were little balls of flavour, texture and taste, prepared to perfection. The crab cakes had the crispy exterior and soft, savoury and delicious interior. Love the presentation. I should have taken photos but I was too interested in devouring these little jewels. My partner ordered the Meat Jambalaya, he was blown away by the perfect seasoning, combination of the ingredients, Andouille sausage, smoked ham and chicken. He says he highly recommends this dish. Ordinarily, I go with the blackened fish of the day, but this visit I thought I would try Lou's Famous Fried Chicken. There is a reason it is "Famous". The chicken was juicy and tender, the coating was crisp and delicious. It came with a side of seasoned fries, delicious and tender. We desperately wanted the incredible Bananas Foster dessert but there was no way we could eat another bite, so we finished off with 2 BB King specialty coffees. You have to try one, if you go; delicious! Again, I forgot photos! Coffee, Bailey's and darned if I can remember the other ingredients. They are listed on the menu. All this to say that if you are visiting Montréal - this is a "Must visit" destination. We live 65 kms away and gladly brave the traffic to avail ourselves of this little treasure chest of Louisiana flavours.

Apparently this place has been around for about 35 years along with other spots in this neighborhood. I was starving so we ordered right away and asked for sweet potato fries. They came out super hot since the kitchen was just a few steps away. They had a very flakey flour coating and were delicious with the sauce. The paneed chicken with creamy green peppercorn sauce was good with the garlic mashed potatoes. Not bad but kind of expensive for what it was. As for the meat jambalaya, it seemed a bit skimpy on the meats... Just a few pieces of sausage, ham and chicken. Good tomato based sauce. Overall food to price value is a 4/5.

One part of the wall looked like the inside of an 1800's style plantation. Super cool! There were statues of the Virgin Mary, along with rosaries and voodoo beads. The bar's light was red which gave it a creepy yet cozy and intimate feel. Beer bottles hung as lights. The service was great. Our waitress always came to our table with a nice smile on her face. She was attentive to us, asking us if we wanted another round of drinks or food. The music was good too; a mix of punk rock music. The prices are great too. Very affordable to eat and drink the night away, especially if you're sharing shots and pitchers. Can't wait to return, I think my friends and I will be regulars.

I had shrimps "guedille" which sounds more from Quebec. It was good, but nothing more. I usually love spicy, but this was that spicy I couldn't even taste the shrimps. They also didn't have ketchup when I asked for it for my french fries. Service was great and friendly. I'm happy to have tried it, but I firmly believe you can find a better spot for southern-Louisiana-type of food in MTL.

The staff also explained that they were able to provide gluten free options for some other items on the menu, but you could only order certain sauces for the chicken, not all were gluten free. We were very satisfied with our experience, and we received great service. They have a nice beer and cocktail variety, and several in our group enjoyed their sangria. The food was well prepared and everything came out at the same time, always a plus for a larger party. As far as the fried chicken, I found the crust to be extremely crispy but otherwise tasty. The bourbon BBQ sauce (one of the ones that contains gluten) was really strong. I do have one beef - their "side" of cole slaw came in the world's smallest dish; I got maybe 2 small forkfuls of slaw out of it, and it was gone. Bird Bar is a little off the beaten path (translation: a bit of a walk to the Metro), but I'd definitely come back on future visits to Montreal.
