And one of the few places in town where sunday afternoons and sunday nights can actually be pretty good. Seventy-Seven (just call it 'Sev' if you want to blend in) is where Middelburgers learn to drink, fall in love, celebrate the birth of their children, come to to find old friends on christmas eve (even if they left the city decades ago), catch their elderly parents getting drunk and eventually catch their own kids having their first beers. One of the oldest bars in town: people have been drinking here on this spot since at least the 1780s. The original building was destroyed in a fire in the 1890s. The present-day building dates from around that time and survived Word War II. It's current decor is from around 1970 when the original De Koophandel (The Commerce) was renamed Seventy-Seven. Probably one of the ugliest and most worn out of all Middelburg bars, which adds to the charm. Other features: regular drum 'n bass nights, not so regular live music, huge terrace out front from april till october. The selection of beers (about 5 on draught, 10 on bottle) could be better. But the atmosphere is always good and you can get crisps, peanuts (free!) and all sorts of toasties around the clock.

They have an impressive and entertaining beer menu where you can read the flavour and pick what you like. I am not so much a beer drinker but the Lindemans Kriek (cherry beer) van 't vat is the best in the world. It just tastes better than anywhere else I had it, don't ask me why. Once I organised an event here and they were so nice to let us use the upper floor for this. Great variety jenevers also, and in the winter I find the hot chocolate with amaretto quite the bargain. Table service can take a while but then you just go up to the bar... This is my favorite bar in the world. Also just the right noise level to still be able to have good conversations. I miss it. It is an old world style restaurant similar to a pub and beer is definitely the thing here. They have a beer menu to make your head spin and spew pea soup trying to decipher. But, it is all excellent. The meal started with an amuse bouche, a seafood and mayo delight. There are also so many food choices that it is hard to select. Our friends recommended a seafood salad. It's a large tomato cored open and stuffed with tiny shrimp. There's endive and a light sauce. These shrimp are a type of delicacy. They are taken from the sand by horses pulling them out with some type of catch basin. It takes a very long time to shell these tiny creatures. They don't look particularly appetizing on a plate but they do taste good. As with any dish it came with fries, these were perhaps the best I've had so far. Plump and fried just right. I tried a local dark beer and it was excellent. For dessert I just had a coffee. The service was excellent. Friendly and very helpful. There's a hotel here as well. We were here at an off hour for lunch but imagine it fills full with locals and tourists alike.

Actually, that was when we paid this place a visit, namely because we had come to see the last post and I wanted to have a drink beforehand, especially at this pub because it was, well, just across the road. I can't comment on the styles of beer since this is a pub in Belgium and there is never a bad Belgium beer (well there is, but they are few and far between, and Stella).

Unfortunately, we did not take photos but the prices are decent and a half carafe of Chardonnay wine is €10.50 and very good. I had it with fish and chips and my partner had steak tartare. We were happy to find somewhere to eat and good ambience, good food, and really great service. That is something also that you will not find on the beach as people get seated quickly and are without drinks and food for a while. I give this thumbs up.
