Our favorite place on the weekend for a bowl of coffee and a croissant. Go early to avoid the crowds and the rug rats.

"World-shaking."…read more Not normally how I'd describe anything, let alone a patisserie, but - mon dieu! - what slice of provincial France exists here in outyling suburbia. They serve coffee in bowls. Bowls! Where are we, Biarritz? There's always a queue, a necessary evil I'm afraid but then, with the sheer Gallic quality of, oh, let's see, *absolutely everything* they produce (in the bakery you can see with your own two eyes (three if you're Tasmanian) out the back of the shop, no less), I'd be worried if there weren't a queue. And really, they could charge what they want, these taste magicians. Their artisan skillz endow them with a virtual license to print money. But do they? They do not! A regular latte is a mere $2.80. Say whaaat?! If you don't get in afore 8am you won't even see a Country Loaf let alone snag one. You'll be left with perfect baguettes, homemade jams, petit fours, and the best almond croissants I've ever tasted (and I once adjudicated at the Best Almond Croissants Awards).

In an area starved for freshly made, artisanal pastries, Ganache is the real deal when it comes to…read moreauthentic French baked goods. Arrive anytime after 10 in the morning and you'll find a seriously depleted selection of breads (their country loaves are a personal fave), but the range of sweets is grazed on throughout the day as guests stop for morning and afternoon tea. Considering the perfection of their pastries and intricacy of each creation, the prices are more than reasonable - just $1.60 for their mini items like raspberry tartlets and coffee éclairs, or $4.50 for a larger items, like the individual roasted, caramelised macadamia cake covered in dark chocolate ganache and flecked with edible gold. The seats are scarce with only some four tables on hand inside, but try to grab one if you can to get the full Gallic experience: the woman regularly manning the till speaks with a bona fide accent, the coffee served as bowls of café au lait rather than paper takeaways, the chairs familiar black-and-white Parisienne wicker creations.
