As an American, you get used to the idea that food is easily and readily accessible almost any time of day. Most restaurants and cafes in our country are open from morning to night with rarely any pause in between, seven days a week. So we found ourselves in a hungry and ill-planned situation at 5pm in Carcassonne, for everything was not to open until 7pm. Yikes!
Fortunately we stumbled upon this place, the only beacon of light in a dark situation (literally and figuratively). Ravenously ordered an onion soup, lasagna, and cassoulet with a three glasses of wine pairing and waited. One waitress, the one who served us, was relatively fluent in English so I'm thankful for that.
A large crowd of seven came in the same time we did, and they were served their food, ate, paid, and left all before we got our food. Granted they all ordered sugar crepes, but it seemed like our food took a lot longer than I'd have preferred.
During our wait, we got two of our three wines, both awfully dry whites with no food to go with it, but we were bored and hungry so finished those two off on empty stomachs. We asked for a basket of bread to tide us over, which we got, all five slices of cold cold very cold bread. We called the waitress over and asked if we could warm it up. She shrugged dismissively and said no. We asked if she could microwave it or have it toasted for us, but she still shrugged and said no. Bummer. Minus a star for waitress with a dismissive "meh" attitude, minus half for the awful wait.
Food finally came, hurrah. We inhaled it. It's average food, nothing stellar or mind blowing, but it's hearty, filling and will do the job if you're hungry. Portion sizes are generous for their prices (8 for soup, 10.50 for lasagna and cassoulet each, 9 for 3 glasses of awfully dry and cheap wine, not great, don't recommend the last one). For that, I dock another half star to a full star since there's definitely better food choices in town, perhaps just not at 5pm.
Last bubbly glass of wine came with the check when all the food was done and gone. Not sure if it's supposed to come so late, but at that point we downed it and left. All three glasses of wine failed to be paired with any food because of poor timing.
Overall a solid 3 star experience. Great if you're hungry and nothing else is open. Otherwise, go elsewhere, there's much better stuff out there. read more
