Dinner: chicken over roasted buckwheat and pumpkin purée, scallops over corn, veal cheeks. It was all good but the chicken was incredibly fork tender delicious. The veal cheeks were roast tender. 2 bottles of $39 and $49 wines recommended by our waiter. All very good! I'm thinking there's no bad wine here in France. read more

We quickly found out why they've earned their Michelin star. Drinks were great, appetizers were good, and the entrees were delicious! I was pleased to enjoy a multi-course meal in nearby Carcassone. After a few twists and turns, we made it to Comte Roger and were immediately seated at our reserved table. Our group was visiting for culinary adventures and much wine imbibing. Comte Roger offers a 39 euro 3 course menu and you can order items a la carte. Based on my group's appetite, I say the set menu is the best buy. I've added several pictures from our outing on Yelp. We started with a light champagne and complimentary thickly creamed courgette soup. That was a delightful way of starting our meal. I ordered the quail with mushroom soup, cassoulet, and praline tarte. Before I get into the food, I should note that I was feeling ill and couldn't eat much. The quail was juicy, rich, and savory. Pieces dotted the mushroom soup. Since I was feeling an aversion to mushroom, I passed eating the soup. The foie gras sounded too rich for me, though the plating was quite playful. The other menu option, salmon tataki with jellied wasabi, wasn't where I wanted to go. My fellow diners were slightly jealous of my tableside cassoulet. Before I arrived, they had been binging on cassoulet, but this was the first tableside service they witness. The server outlined the meats as she placed them on my plate - duck confit, pork sausage, and the beans. Great dish, overall. I finished with the praline tarte. The nutty taste and graininess of the tarte were perfect for me. It was a good balance for my previous rich dishes. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and would like to return with a stronger appetite. After living in France 30+ years I can say without hesitation the lunch I, my wife, and our guest had at Comte Roger was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I have ever had at a highly rated french restaurant. Where to begin? At the time we made our reservation over the phone we were NOT informed we would be the only table sharing a lovely outdoor terrace with a party of 50 corporate business guests, leading to us being seated at a table crammed in a corner next to the service bar while the party of 50 occupied the banquets under the vine covered trellis. While the ever growing number of corporate guests arrived, standing directly adjacent to our table and carrying on loudly as if we were not there, the final straw came when one of the guests bumped into our waiter just as he was serving our drinks, resulting in an entire drink being spilled on my shirt and lap. The waiter returned with a roll of paper towels for me to dry myself, as well as a fresh drink, and proceeded as if nothing had happened. A few minutes later someone in the restaurant realized we were outnumbered by the party of 50 and asked if we would prefer to move inside...yes please. In retrospect that is when we should have left. On the way to our new table we passed the manager and I showed her the drink I was now wearing. She shrugged and went off to see to the party. In the mostly empty dinning room our waiter pointed us to a dark table against a wall, while I pointed to a much nicer table with a window view that was clearly meant for other guests arriving later. He relented and seated us at the window table. It became clear things were not going to improve when the waiter informed me the 1/2 bottle of wine I had selected was not available and made no offer to bring us a full bottle as compensation for the troubles we had already experienced. Our guest ordered a 1/2 bottle of white while I went ahead and ordered a full bottle of red for my wife and me. The waiter brought both wines to our table, uncorked them, and departed. I was left to taste and pour the wines myself. At the end of the meal, after more confusion regarding our coffees, the three of us spent a good ten minutes trying to get someone's attention to request the bill. When the 230 euros bill finally arrived, I noted exactly zero compensation for the seating debacle, spilled drink, and overall poor service. We even had to get up to pay at the desk since the wait staff and manager had abandoned us to clean up after the party on the terrace. Except for our waiter, who for all I know was on his first day at the job, all of the problems could have been avoided simply by informing us at the time we made the reservation that the restaurant terrace had been reserved for a large party and we would simply have booked a table for the following day, but alas. Sadly, for the kitchen staff none of the fault lies with them. The food was excellent. But the management and waiter who "served" us were another story entirely. Based upon all the glowing reviews which led us try this restaurant, I have no doubt our experience was an exception. But when a restaurant falls short to the degree we experienced the least one would expect is some acknowledgment, compensation, or apology. None of which were forthcoming. In fact, as we passed the manager on our way out she was too preoccupied chatting with a VIP from the party to thank us for coming or even acknowledge our presence. Fortunately, France is full of lovely restaurants run by wonderful people who know how to look after their clientele. From our experience Comte Roger is not one of them. Adieu Comte Roger, you shall not be missed. One final note. If dear reader, you have made it to the end of this tome and are under the impression we must have done something to deserve the service we received, ie. been difficult, demanding, or rude in some manner at any point during the meal, I can assure you this was not the case. As I noted at the beginning of this review, I have lived in France for over 30 years. My father was french. I speak the language and understand the culture. Exceptional service and quality taking the most out of the regional products. The room is very pleasant and intimate. Also a great opportunity to try the local wines which are not so well known. Somewhat expensive but not necessarily overpriced. A special place for a special occasion. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel reception. A pleasant 10-minute walk through the old town brought us to this charming restaurant. We were fortunate to enjoy an outdoor table on the terrace on a pleasant evening. Do come early if you are dining without a reservation! Food was delicious and beverage was well-matched. I passed a restaurant called Adelaide while walking through Carcassonne's old city this afternoon that I wanted to try, but I couldn't remember where it was and ended up at Comte Roger on Rue St Louis. They were full inside (which I took to be a good sign) but there were tables outside under the vine covered trellis and as it was quite mild I took one of those. I chose from the set menu which was 39 euros for three courses. My appetiser was the whiting terrine, sea snails and sweet red pepper, veal with fennel, black olives and tarragon cream for main, and chilled cream of muscat with a Languedoc fritter for desert. Before I'd even ordered the waiter delivered a tray of amuse bouche; a little tub of green olives, some fresh baby radishes, a tiny pastry shell stuffed with some kind of pâté, a little savoury muffin and a shot glass of creme de chou-fleur, a very light cauliflower emulsion. Everything was delicious and a great start to the meal. Alcohol free day today, so I declined the waiter's offer of a wine list and instead ordered a citron Diablo - a bottle of lemonade served with a glass of citron syrup and ice. My appetiser arrived quite quickly considering how busy the restaurant was. The whiting terrine (which I first mistook for a small slice of white bread) was very understated, only slightly fishy, and had a soft mouth. This was beautifully offset by the sea snails (a first for me) that were somewhat more flavoursome and slightly chewy. A salad of mixed lettuce and finely sliced peppers completed the dish, which I found myself liking more the more I ate. Really well balanced flavours, subtle yet delicious. The veal is some of the best I've ever had, tender and very tasty. It was served with a side of tube pasta in a creamy black olive, fennel and sun dried tomato sauce. Once again, the combination and balance of the flavours and textures was excellent. I'm not a big fan of fennel, sun-dried tomatoes or black olives, but I could eat this all night. Desert continued the trend set by the rest of the meal. Thin, slightly sweet biscuit pastry served with a cylinder of delicately flavoured muscat cream on a bed of finely diced pineapple. The tangy pineapple played beautifully against the rich but subtle cream with the biscuit adding some crunchy texture. Sensational. Excellent food, great service in a charming location, and considering the quality, a steal at under 50 euros. Comte Roger ticks all the boxes. read more

It is difficult to find a good restaurant on this very touristic Carcassonne. So we where really lucky to find this one for dinner. They have a really nice terrace under wine plants. The service is friendly and intent. The food is of excellent quality. The price level is a bit higher. We aid for two for three course menu incl. drinks 105 Eur. Which is still O.K. as it was a great evening. read more

Went here for my birthday dinner while staying in magical Carcassonne. We were pleased to get a table right away with no reservation since it was a Wednesday night in the off season. The food was excellent, the ambiance of the restaurant enjoyable and the staff mostly attentive. Our meal was amazing and I would give the food here five stars, however I'm giving my total review only four stars for the following reason. We ordered a bottle of local red wine which the waiter promptly uncorked and left to breathe on our table. We asked for larger red wine glasses instead of the tiny glasses that were already set at the table. The waiter never came back with them, but he did bring new glasses to the party of four next to us with great fanfare over the bottle of white they ordered. We could not get his attention after this, so ended up just using the smaller glasses. That in itself is not such a big deal but I expected more attentiveness from this caliber of restaurant, especially after telling him we were celebrating a special occasion. That said the meal was excellent and we had a lovely time. We would definitely eat here again. We started with glasses of local sparkling (blanquette) and an amuse-bouche of green olives, toast with truffle pâté, a tiny onion tart and a soft savory roll. My husband had the beef and said it was the third best steak he's ever had in his life. (This is really saying something as he was raised on a ranch in Texas!) I had duck breast with prunes and artichokes which was also excellent. For dessert he had a sampling of dark chocolate and raspberry desserts with vanilla ice cream and lichees. I had the waiter's favorite and I can't remember what it was called, but it was a delicious layering of sweet alcohol, pudding, chocolate and ice cream garnished with pistachio brittle sticks. read more
