Have you ever felt like you were in that creepy hotel from The Shining and might get murdered? For me, that was Le Grand Vatel.
We were really eager to try this restaurant, because our B&B owner recommended it as being the best in the area. We walked by on a Saturday night around 8:30, and it was closed, with no signage to indicate whether it was a seasonal closure or their usual closing day, or what. It seemed odd that a restaurant would close on a Saturday evening. We walked by again on a Monday night, and it was closed once again, so we assumed it was just an extra long holiday closure that went through the middle of January.
And yet on Tuesday, a TUESDAY, it was open. After all the buildup, we had to go. We walked in, and the server was standing there, ready to greet us. They had no other customers, and yet the restaurant smelled great, from food that was already cooking. For us??
The place looked like a really classy old hotel from 100 years ago, with really outdated furniture and decor, and it was indeed part of a hotel. The host/server took our coats and put them into a fance old-timey wardrobe that was inexplicably filled with dozens of brand new baseball caps. I know this isn't true, but my initial thought was that these were the caps of all their former customers who never made it out.
We sat down, and the menu looked pretty good and reasonably priced. The server was extremely unhelpful, but we eventually settled on a couple of three-course menus and some wine. The wine was not great, but the food was good. It's your typical, fancy French food.
Still, the creepy ambiance severely detracted from the experience. There were about ten tables in the restaurant, and all of them were empty the entire time we were there. Throughout the meal, my sister and I kept commenting to each other how creepy it was.
There were at least two people working there, and most likely three: a server and a manager guy (who we saw), and presumably a chef as well. But no other customers.
Afterwards, we went down the street to grab a drink, and when we walked by Le Grand Vatel again, roughly 30 minutes later, around 8:30, it was CLOSED AGAIN, with no signs of life whatsoever. There were no customers, no staff, and the lights were all off, as though nobody had ever been there! WHAT IS THIS PLACE?!?!
To be clear, the server simply did his job, and the manager guy never acknowledged us, so nobody did anything that would indicate our lives were ever in danger. It just felt really, really creepy. read more
