I started with the onion soup, which was easily the saddest onion soup I've had in France. The flavor was good, but it just had some shredded cheese sprinkled on the top, not bruleed as advertised on the menu. For my main course, I had the roast duck. I ordered it medium, but it was totally overcooked and tough, with no pink inside at all. It made me feel bad that a duck lost its life just to be overcooked. The duck was beautifully presented, though, with a side of carrots, mashed veggies, and a mini mushroom crepe on the side. The sides were easily the best part of the meal. Service was good, and I liked the wine that I had. Sadly, I wouldn't go back because of the food quality.

I got the "fondue," which was not what it sounded like. It was more like mini pizzas with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese on baguette slices. Delicious nonetheless. My boyfriend ordered a chevre salad. The goat cheese was plentiful, and spiced with sun dried tomatoes and chives. For our entrees, we ordered salmon with a cream sauce and magret de canard (duck breast). Both were great. The salmon was cooked well, and the sauce was very good, albeit very heavy. The duck was moist on the inside with crispy skin, and also had a nice sauce. Both dishes came with a half of a baked tomato covered in breadcrums - interesting, but not my favorite part of the meal. The waitress was very nice, even when she got overwhelmed by about 40 loud tourists who came in mid-way through our meal (we were quiet tourists, of course). If I'm ever back in Fontainbebleau then I'll definitely come back here.

We were a group of 8 and ordered a bunch of pastries to share - we got the Sultane (a biscuit with citrus and fig jam, topped with fresh figs and whipped cream dollops), the Or Vert (a pistachio roll filled with pistachio cream and raspberry jam), the Tonka (a soft vanilla cream and chocolate mousse on top of a soft chocolate biscuit, enrobed in a thin casing of chocolate), the Williams (a vanilla mousse with pear compote on a nut biscuit), and then some pain au chocolate praline (pain au chocolate with both chocolate and praline filling, also topped with chocolate). Given my Asian tooth, I prefer desserts that are not as sweet. The Sultane was therefore perfect; the figs and candied citrus added a nice sweetness, balanced by the base (which resembled a graham biscuit). Second favourite is the pain au chocolate - at 2.20 EUR, it isn't much pricier than a classic version, but is far more indulgent! The other desserts were just okay for me - all were super sweet. The Or Vert wasn't too sugary, but I didn't really enjoy the pairing. The Tonka was okay if I just ate the casing and the base, and the Williams was just a sugar bomb. Overall, this patisserie is a good place to splurge, but be ready for some sweet pastries!

Turns out, this was a blessing in disguise for what turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip in France. I've always loved pub and bistro fare and ambiance, and Le Franklin was no exception. Besides the necessary plate of cheese and charcuterie for apero, we ordered exclusively off of the daily specials menu: Châtaigne Veloute (Chestnut Soup) and a cut of steak referred to as a "fuax fillet". The soup is served with a dollop of creme fraiche, while the steak comes with a side of the most delicious thick-cut fries and sautéed veggies. It is difficult with all the goodness, but you must save room for dessert, as there is a seemingly never-ending list of goodies make in-house. We landed on the Profitroles and Tarte Tatin - both of which are difficult to find traditional examples of in the States. Runners up included Mousse au chocolate and a Speculoos cake. Service was excellent and even with all of our indulgences, the bill came out to around $35 a person - more than reasonable.
