Delicious if you don't mind soft, braised fat covering the meat. Underneath the layer of fat is lovely meat with a texture similar to carnitas. The cazuela was just soup, typical with a huge potato, squash and corn on the cob. The merluza had a light batter and we ordered ensalada Chilena with it. With wine the huge meal was $21,000 pesos. About $30 bucks and you have to pay cash for tip.the waiter was a bit salty, but was happy with 10%.

Quita penas, or "take away sorrow", is exactly what the patrons of this bar do - drown their sorrows with a large jug of pipeño or in one of their rich dishes. The food served here is a true example of Chilean comfort food at its finest, with bread, potatoes and meat as the base of almost all of these dishes. This pub is not the most glamorous, but in a way, that is what makes it so unique and perfect for its location and purpose. It is a simple and cozy pub with photos lining its walls of popular figures such as Chilean sports stars, politicians such as Allende, artists such as Victor Jara and Gato Alquinta (from Los Jaivas) as well as Chilean poets and filmmakers. Quita Penas is one of the historical hubs of Santiago, filled with stories and popular culture, it is here to stay. As it was told to me, everyone has a memory of spending an afternoon here with their family, passing through many emotions from sorrow to laughter. One of the many things that has put Quita Penas on the map, is for Chile's main soccer clubs Colo-Colo. Colo-Colo was founded here in 1925 by two football players who were drowning their sorrows, after being let go from their soccer team. Now, whenever an "hincha" of Colo-Colo passes away, they always make their way here (their last stop of their caravan). Tip: You can get here by taking the green line metro to "Cementerios" Try the "Paró la Chala". It is the house drink, made of pisco, gin and granadine (similar to a Terremoto but way stronger!) They are open every day of the year except for September 11th.

Service is good - and "good" in Chile (specifically Santiago) means the server takes your order in less than ten minutes after you've been seated, and they ask if you need anything while your eating... Yeah, customer service in Chile isn't one of its selling points. Today I had Lingua con pure picante (tongue baked with a sweet tomato sauce, parm, and lumpy mashed potatoes spiced with Merken (one of two spicy seasonings liked by most, adventurous, Chileans). It was awesome - melt in your mouth good. I chased it down with an Austral Calafate Ale - superb. I ate at the bar today, and it offers a great view of the restaurant and an opportunity to watch the bartender whip up Chilean drinks like Pisco Sours and some fresh fruit drinks... Outside seating is comfortable and offers a great opportunity to people watching.

My favorite is the Mostacarne. I like that the arepa actually stays together instead of falling apart into a mess. Also the sauces are good. I brought a Venezuelan friend here to see what he thought, and he gave it his stamp of approval (although apparently it's just not possible to get that true Venezuelan taste in Chile because of the availability of some ingredients). Also, the price is great so it makes for a good lunch for me (and conveniently is close to my apartment!). You can also order on delivery apps like PedidosYa, but it's cheaper to get it in the actual restaurant.

They started me with a small cup of a drink originating from coconut water (I think). I order a pisco sour flavored with regional mint from the north. It was quite good. They brought me a long, thin wooden platter with an assortment of bite sized morsels that originated from the north to the south of Chile. Each bite was different. They was some spicy pepper-based sauce and a few bite-sized pieces of flat bread. When they observed my interest (I asked a question), they offered a look at a book dedicated entirely to native foods. It looked a bit dated but it was really cool. There was an image of the dish with explanations. Many other interesting things in the book. I started with the ceviche and it was really good. Then I had a mixed salad and that was quite good, but there were things in there that felt like stones. My main was the shrimp. It was a fine dish, made quite elegantly, but they used a certain type of pepper that I don't care for (maybe it was fire roasted? But it's a flavor I encountered from time to time and it just doesn't work for me. Wait staff was kind and knowledgeable, but not in a hurry. Cool space; nice atmosphere.

The cazuela de pollo (chicken soup) tasted fresh and healthy. The biscuits were warm and toasty and came with delicious pebre salsa. We tried the terramotto drink (has pineapple ice cream) but it was too sweet. We wanted items unique to Chile since we can't get this anywhere else. Leaving town the next day, we were looking for a place to try a few traditional Chilean dishes we hadn't yet tried: empanadas, pastille de chocolate, and the sweet ice cream cocktail called Terremoto.
