Drôle d'Endroit is a hidden gem. Located off the main walkway of a nearby busy street and down an…read moreunassuming alley, you'll find this "curious place." No reservations required for a Tuesday night. The ambience is lovely and quiet. We had a bubbly server with cool acrylic nails who recommended an excellent bottle of local Aix produced organic rosé wine (much of their list is organic). Delicate strawberries and cherries that ended in a clean, dry finish. Our party of three each ordered different dishes. All unique and delicious. I had a slow-cooked chicken on the bone with a rich cream sauce I would compare to the best USA southern gravies accompanied by a gnocchi-style baked soufflé. A wonderfully subtle flavor that was enhanced by the cream sauce. The pickled vegetables on the side added a fresh pop of acid that made for a well-balanced dish. My fiancée had the tuna tartare which I thought was a bit more like a ceviche than a tartar, but was nonetheless delicious. A sour and savory vinaigrette combined well with the tuna and vegetables. I say ceviche because the tuna was chopped more finely than I've had in prior tuna tartare. Our friend had the salmon which he seemed to quite enjoy. He mentioned that he loved the interplay of hot and cold elements in the dish. Finally, we all shared a few of their small chocolate lava cakes for dessert--a highlight of this meal. They were perfectly cooked and oozed rich, decadent chocolate that left us all rubbing our bellies by the end. You need to try this curiously delicious food.

You have to read some of the reviews and see for yourself what the talk is about. We walked over and without reservation, scored a seat in the patio. Our 3 course meal was 20 euro but it none of the dishes were memorable. The dishes had a home cooked feeling, as if you could make the dishes at home, but nothing tasted out of this world. My bf got the short ribs and I got the baby chicken. Neither dishes were that great. Dessert was probably the best part of the meal. I probably would not return. For those who do not know the language: Owner speaks English. Waitresses know little English.

Not sure what "SCI Charlotte" refers to. This restaurant is called, variously,…read moreResto Charlotte, Chez Charlotte, or Restaurant Charlotte, at least online, as far as I can tell. On the other hand, there's no actual sign or label at the unassuming entrance on rue des Bernardines -- which could generously be called a side street but almost borders on an alley. This is NOT your typical restaurant in touristy Aix-en-provence. We sought it out because a website described it as the sort of place that the Aixoise would go. Well, that may be, and I certainly would not blame them, but there were plenty of tourists there when we dined on a weekday. (They basically open at 8pm, a more French dining time, while most establishments in the city accommodate touristic tastes and open as early as 7. In fact, our rather entertaining waiter seemed to speak French, English, and German fluently (to hear him banter with nearby tables) -- although he couldn't manage Mandarin. How to describe the food? "Unpretentious" would be accurate but maybe slightly misleading. It is a fantastic deal for a full meal compared to most sit-down restaurants in Aix. Expect well-executed, classic but un-fussy French cuisine in a pleasant outdoor courtyard. The vibe is fun, even on a less crowded evening. The two of us had the summer special gazpacho (amazing, and quite spicy) and the chicken liver pate (also very good) for entrees. Our main courses were a steak and a fillet of veal, both served with french-fry-like hash browns and haricot verts. A plum clafoutis and a nicely caramelly tarte tatin rounded out this meal -- very traditional bistro fare. (Both desserts were tasty, without being mind blowingly good or especially original.) At 40 Euros (tax + tip included, of course) for two people, including one glass of house red and one coffee, I think Chez Charlotte's menu might be the best deal in Aix.

I read the reviews and I am amazed how most of them are positive!…read more Peak of the season, July 16th, 2026, when most of restaurants in Sanary require a reservation, L'En K is pretty empty at 8:30pm. We don't want to walk around an hour, then after looking at the menu (not so convince for me) we sat down on the terrace in the street. It took 15min for our server to bring two carafes of water (It's canicule...), servers wearing very casual cloths, short and sneakers, yes it's hot, but really.... superb service!? Decent olive tapenade and a few croutons from a bag. Two guests ordered the menu with foie gras in first course. What a shame to call this French gastronomie; the foie gras is tastless, no a little bit of fleur-de-sel won't make it up, served on an industrial "pain d'épice" slice (gingerbread) from the bag, yes, the one I hated in my childhood called "Prosper"!!! OMG, are you calling this food?? not even toasted and I don't talk about the "mix green" from a bag, pieces of romaine stem, trévisse white leave not these nice mesclun you can find on Sanary market, served with a wedge of tasteless tomato, and,..... a slice of CUCUMBER!!! Look at the photos, we are back to the 80's, when industrial companies started with salad bags I had the ribeye, cooked medium rare, more rare than medium, no salt or pepper before being seared, porcini sauce from a bag, nothing is homemade there. A bunch of veggies soaking on a little bit of residual water...probably frozen vegetables, no olive oil...etc etc. Profiterole not homemade, same as Chantilly, chocolate lava cake, etc, etc... Don't waste your time and money and don't make these restaurants thinking that they are good, they are far from average and again this is a real shame from French food culture!!
