BOTTOM LINE: An elevated snack bar with all-day service!…read more Located just outside the main strip in Bala is this rustic chic spot that doubles as a casual (take-out) cafe and fancy dining spot. This review is for the cafe/breakfast part, and I'll need to come back for dinner one day. Reservations are for dinner only. First of all, the menu is EXTENSIVE, which was pleasantly surprising given how compact the indoor appeared to be (unless there's a backroom I missed!). From various pastries, brunch specials, salads, hearty sandwiches, and pizzas, everything looked looked pretty fresh and hearty. There's also a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks The SMOKED BRISKET GRILLED CHEESE AU JUS definitely hit the spot with rich slices of brisket, chewy gruyere cheese, and a tasty dipping just. The JERUSALEM SPICED CHICKEN SCHNITZEL SAMMIE lightly battered crispy chicken that was more like a chicken tender than a traditional schnitzel, but it was more ergonomic that way in sammie form. Their pickled toppings gave it a good balance of flavours. That said, from a presentation/portion/value perspective, both plates looked barren with just the sammies, and I think throwing even a pinch of some greens on the side would really complete things. Overall, a great spot to come by if you're in the area!

My husband really enjoyed his rainbow trout tacos, and I thought my tofu burger hit the spot. The restaurant had a great selection of beers and my husband liked his. My Sauvignon blanc was decent. However my parents didn't have a great meal. They ordered the dry ribs, which turned out not to be dry rubbed ribs but battered rib nuggets. Super disappointing. Their onion rings were also mediocre - big portion but small rings and lots of batter. The kids menu had your typical fried stuff but also a roasted chicken and rice dish, with peas and onions. Dessert included a cookie or ice cream. They had an outside patio and plenty of tables inside where there are TVs and a view of the fermentation tanks which my kids enjoyed taking a closer look at. They also had coloring crayons. Fun spot and good random drop by, but I guess you just have to be careful what you order!

The berry scone was amazing as well. I wished the tea place we went to the day before in Gravenhurst (Blue Willow Tea Shop) made their scones as good as this. Farmer's Daughter's scones were sweet and didn't need jam. The chocolate chip cookies were fantastic as well. I liked the husband's edamame avocado bean salad. The son got a pasta combo for $18.99. I really liked his mac and cheese; the pasta salad was fine. I wasn't a fan of his peanut butter chocolate chip cookie (too much pb, not enough choc) The daughter really liked her potatoes dauphinois. Her side of roasted cauliflower, mushrooms, and broccoli were fine, but the pierogies were exceptional. This place drains your wallet little by little. I suggested it because I thought it would make sense to have a cheaper lunch but I'm not sure it was. Especially by the time we got dessert. (But it was worth it!) The next day the husband and I had the lentil wrap - he ordered it the first day and was a fan. It was kind of like Amy's brand of samosas but better and fresh. It definitely grows on you. The daughter was not as into her chicken with cornflake breading. The son got the lasagna but thought the previous day's mac n cheese was better.

The ambiance is lovely and welcoming with a beautiful patio that features heaters for the cooler evenings. There is also live entertainment on some nights. The summer cocktail selection is impressive and we all enjoyed them to kick off the experience. The menu is quite limited which is not a bad thing for a restaurant focused on quality but I still found it to be a bit too limited. The wine selection is also quite limited. If you love your wines, like I do, I would bring my own and gladly pay the corkage fee. We had a little bit of everything from meats to pasta and fish. We shared for the table so that we each had the opportunity to try everything. There was nothing to complain about but it didn't "wow" us. In speaking with some longtime locals, I think the popularity of this place has meant that they no longer need to go above and beyond to satisfy the local crowd and cottagers who don't mind spending a lot on a nice night out. It was just that - a nice night out.
