On our way out of Bala, we decided to check out Muskoka Lakes Winery. They've been around since 1950. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon. They do daily tours (11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm) but we were only there to do the $7.00/person wine sampling. They had quite the variety of products: dried cranberries, maple syrup, artisan cheese, preserves and sauces. Cranberry ketchup was an intriguing combo. Bottles were in the $16.95 to 18.95 price range. - 2016 Cranberry - 2016 Cranberry blueberry - 2016 Blueberry - 2016 White cranberry - 2016 Red maple cranberry maple dessert wine - this one was poured into a chocolate shot. Drink it first then eat the chocolate or do both! Wines were decent but nothing really stood out for me.

Staff here are super friendly. We were with our two-year-old so the owner suggested we just walk around by ourselves. They do have information as you walk around that explains a lot of interesting points. We had a wonderful time walking around. The winery has a restaurant with the beautiful patio overlooking the cranberries fields. The restaurant has food such as Brie sandwiches, cheeses and of course wine. The shop has souvenirs for taking a look at. They sell jams, jellies, wine, chocolate, glasses etc. The staff will be happy to help you choose a wine and give you samples to test out. You can also pay for a more elaborate winetasting. This is a very nice little outing for the whole family. I would definitely recommend. If you are wAnting To do the guided tour I would recommend calling to make reservations

Again, was not disappointed! Stopped by for lunch with a friend. Ordered the same chicken club on…read moreGF bread since it was so good last time. This time I also tried a salad on the side that was like a vinaigrette slaw made from mainly cauliflower - it was delicious and flavourful. My friend got the pulled pork sandwich with potato salad and said it was excellent! We were able to eat outside which was so nice. We both agreed, we'll be back next time we're in the neighbour.

Cottage Cravings only recently came to Bala after a fire at their original Gravenhurst location…read more last year left them looking for a new space. But I'm so glad they landed in our tiny, sleepy town: CC is about as close as it gets to a one-stop shop here. There aren't a lot of places where you can grab a coffee and sandwich, pick up cheese and charcuterie to take home, or grab wall art or dish towels for the cottage. I appreciate that the products here are so thoughtfully selected as well. Cottage decor can teeter on kitschy, but the selection at CC -- technicolor enameled outdoor dining sets, lake-themed hooked rugs, craftsman birdhouses -- is tasteful as well as fun. Popsicle makers and painted martini glasses give ideas. Food from local vendors means you don't have to wait for next week's farmers market to pick up those jams or condiments. And a bounty of healthful dining options from veggie paninis to fresh soups make a quick, delicious lunch. CC definitely makes a great addition to our little hamlet.
