No wonder people are mad at corporate. When I asked to speak to the manager after he took his time coming down and thawing more of my frozen food, he doesn't say hi. I'm the manager. How can I assist you? He says, "Is it you. At that point, I'm done with my patience, lol. They need a lesson in customer service. I was not rude and was patient. If he doesn't want to work there, find another job. So what did I learn loblaws are not in the business of customer service. They could care less, even the loyal ones who are not boycotting. Thanks, loblaws, for showing my concerns are put aside and not dealt with. Feel free to change my mind loblaws, but I'm sure you won't. You have no time for your loyal customers.

Were it not for a traffic jam caused by some genius trying to overtake a truck and causing both vehicles to crash into each other several kilometres down the highway, it's likely that we never would have visited this place. That being said, I'm glad I visited, because this is what small-town Ontario is all about. You want weird local newspapers filled with fluff content? This is your joint right here. Need some booze? This is a licensed LCBO retailer - with a whopping two aisles of booze to choose from. Want some weird knick-knacks or joke items so you can have the infamy of crowing about how you stopped here? Make this your first stop. It says something when the only other places in this "town" are a chipstand and a fire station/town hall (closed, of course) across the street, so there was little to do other than check out the nearby lake and mill around the store. For what it's worth, the service is very good (the cashier there apparently has "contacts" in the OPP, which she was bragging about to great effect as she tried to relay information and updates to visitors) and the selection isn't all that bad. I can see this being a weird, quirkly place to stop at if you need something quick or are in dire need of supplies. Just don't go out of your way for it if you don't have to. 3/5.

The equivalent back home in NS was No Frills, which I also enjoyed frequenting. Pros: - Very convenient location - I live right down the road and have found the South End to be convenient for just about everything I regularly need (banks, library, Dollarama, etc.). - A bus stop right by the parking lot and one across the street. - Fairly large parking lot. - As I'd mentioned earlier, the prices and deals are fantastic! Produce, meat, dairy, grocery...I've never found anything too expensive. I've compared prices in a few different stores and Food Basics wins out almost every time. - The selection is quite good - lots of variety in produce and a pretty darn good International Foods section means I'm content. - This location doesn't seem to be as hectic as the store on Notre Dame (thank god). I haven't had any issues getting in and out of the store in a reasonable amount of time. - My cats really like the grocery boxes I bring home. - Staff are pleasant. Cons: - Shopping carts are located outside, which I don't especially like, and they tend to take up too many spots in the parking lot. The cart corrals are often overflowing. In summary, this particular Food Basics has a lifelong customer in me.

They tend to carry current trendy items and one year I brought home a pair of gel slippers that were an interesting combination of odd and useful. It's trendy in terms of retail fads rather than fashion. The clothing items are mostly useful basics that have nothing to do with haute couture, apart from the quintessential pieces like your classic rain boots and slickers and the like. I always stop in to see what's around for the current season and almost always come out with the best bargain of the trip. It's a comforting shopping staple in Tobermory.
