My son wanted to learn to fish so I decided to surprise him with lessons for his 11th birthday. I found Mike through a google search and decided to contact him. I emailed him and he was very responsive and very detailed on the services he offered. I booked our lesson for 7/5/24 at 3:30pm. It was very easy to meet up with him. Mike is extremely knowledgeable about fishing and taught us so many things. He was also extremely patient with my son's, the 11 year old birthday boy and my 6 year old. The boys absolutely loved him!!! Mike was so kind and he even showed up with little gifts for the boy's. They received fishing hats, gloves, tackle boxes. My 11 year old did phenomenal and all thanks to Mike's direction. He took the boys to catch their own bate, showed them how to tie different knots and explained the whole science behind fishing.I definitely plan on booking another lesson with Mike. My son was so grateful and had such a good time! Definitely a memorable birthday for him. Thank you Mike!!!

Fish Guide extraordinaire! Mike and his crew get you on fish with a dying art of catching local live bait and truly nails the hi-caliber professional fisherman. League on its own learn from the best, very patient, soft-spoken, eager to pass down the science and theories to catch fish from the surf, jetty, pier, and open waters. He knows how to tie knots like a pro, but he's also battled and beat everyone in the Izor knot tying contests Pro division! If you are intimidated in fishing or an old salty, Mike has the level to teach you NEW ideas and make you a better angler. I wished I had known him before I started my saltwater fishing career. Highly Recommended Capt JT

I have always been curious about fishing and enjoyed it the few times I was able to tag along with someone else. But I wanted to learn more about fishing rather than have a rod just handed to me. This is where Michael and LBC fishing lessons came into play. I did a search online and found his site to be the best that matched my needs as a TOTAL novice. I did Lesson #1 Back Bay Basics, and I can honestly say that I feel I have learnt enough to venture out on my own. I would 100% recommend Michael. He is patient, thorough and knows a LOT, LOT, LOT about fishing. He brings over 40 years experience. You stand to learn from him whether you are a novice like me, or someone with experience. In the 4 hrs, I learnt how to catch and use live bait, I learnt how to set up 2 different types of rigs ( Carolina and fish finder). I learnt how to tie 3 different types of knots ( Uni, clinch/fisherman's and improved clinch), solunar theory of fishing, how to hold and cast the rod and much more! All of this resulted in me catching 2 spotted bass! If you are interested in learning how to fish, developing a new hobby, or hone existing skills- learn from a pro. Take classes with Michael and LBC fishing lessons. It will be so worth it. Thank you Michael, I'll be back! W.V.

Just had a great session with Michael. As an avid sport boat fisherman I found my skills lacking from shore. He taught us what we needed to know to be successful. From catching bait to the science of when the best time to fish was. His science was spot on and the fish were biting the whole time. Caught a few and lost even more. Caught as many fish in one lesson as I've done alone the past 2 months. My 10yo said it was the best fishing trip he's ever had. Michael is friendly and a great teacher. My hyper kid was engaged the entire time.

Michael was the best intro to fishing I could have ever imagined for our cub scout den! Most of the parents in our group know nothing about fishing and have no gear, so we opted to go w/ a professional. After calling around a bunch of different places and programs, I was impressed by Michael's knowledge of fishing, his willingness to work out a time that suited the fish and our scouts, and his great attitude about making sure our scouts covered all the material required in their scoutting manual to earn their belt loop! He handled our group of 15 boys like a pro- keeping them interested with his "survivalist" approach to fishing. The boys were still talking at school the week after about grabbing mussels, shrimp, and dipnetting for smelt to gather their own live bait in case of an apocalypse. :) As parents, we were also impressed by his confident knowledge in all the local regulations. He has his license, knew all the fish/game regs, and provided all the equipment. The boys were wowed by the apps he showed us to explain why the tides, moon, etc all affect when/where to go fishing. We had 1 fisherman dad in our group, who was constantly saying, "wow, I didn't know that. this guy is amazing!" The scouts and parents had a great time practicing casting w/ his weighted rods. His spiked-rod setups were brilliant for our scouts who didn't have the patience to actually sit and fish. He can be really proud of raising 2 polite, responsible boys who were a great role model for our young scouts. His boys were helpful, informative, and kind, teaching the scouts different knots and always being on hand to help out when we got fishing line tangles. In the end, we caught a spotted sand bass- and the boys were ecstatic! We measured him, examined its body parts, took pics, and because he was too short, we threw him back in to grow some more. It was a great experience for our scouts. Our scouts can't wait to go back w/ him since he's promised us many more great spots to fish from in the area! Thank you Michael!

As relatively new fishermen, I and a buddy have gone fishing in the harbor 10+ times with minimal success on anything except mackerel. It was truly a case of the blind leading the blind. I think the most non mackerel we've caught in a single outing was 2-3 bass combined, and we've been skunked more times than I care to admit. I was this close to giving up fishing thinking it's just not my kind of sport. Michael joined us for a 1/2 day of targeting halibut and we more then tripled our previous best day fishing with no mackerel! I caught 3 buts myself, one of which was 19" long and my personal best. No keepers, but we're confident it's only a matter of time now. Thanks Michael for saving my piddling fishing career, and renewing my interest. My only regret was that we didn't seek your guide services earlier. It would have saved us so much money on the useless tackle that we bought, the gas for aimlessly trying to locate honey holes, and the electronics that we didn't know how to use. Tight lines!

Landed my first corbina. Thanks Michael! Had a wonderful dinner.

I've been fishing since I was 10 and I thought I already had a lot of knowledge about fishing, but after my lesson with Michael, l knew I had a bunch more to learn. He covers everything from catching bait, reading currents, tying knots, rigging for specific species. Michael is very patient. I'll say catching a fish is almost guaranteed, but just being out there in the water and learning something new is all worth it for me.

Mike is a very patient and knowledgeable instructor. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the 2 days of lessons,as we are newer surf fishers! Definitely feel like we got our money's worth and would recommend to any fisher of any experience level.

Mike helped me get this PB 20" California Halibut. My previous best was 18". Still not legal but I'm at least one step closer!

Dan is a fishing expert with over 50 years of experience fishing the California & Mexican coast. He also founded the Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation over 18 years ago, in an effort to promote & spread the joy & love of fishing to the next generation. Besides TV taping fishing charters, he also provides private charters on his 31' Tiara Express boat, the "Mi Sueno". Specializing in 1/2 & 3/4 day charters, the trips target local reefs, structure & Catalina Island. Occupancy is limited to just 4 anglers (3 minimum needed), and all bait, tackle & fishing equipment are provided. Anglers just need to bring their fishing license, food/drink, proper layering of clothing, camera & a good attitude. Normally, Dan offers a 50% discount on open party trips in the spring. However, due to the lockdown & subsequent reopening phases, he also offered discounted trips this summer. Not having fished for many years, and the shutdown making me stir crazy, I secured my spot on a trip & was eager to hook into fish. We started the day fishing by the Catalina Sea Ranch mussel farm. The target was yellowtail, the most sought after gamefish in SoCal. My goal this year is to catch my first ever yellowtail, but alas, they weren't biting. Dan then brought us to Izor's Reef. On my first cast with a lively sardine, I instantly hooked a well beyond legal barracuda. From there, it was wide open on calico bass. They were so thick, the bass would congregate by the boat. Just drop a baited hook, and it would be fish on. I even managed to land a big, toad calico bass. It had some shoulders on her, and I had a blast landing it. Limiting out on calicos, our catch was filleted on our way back from the 1/2 day trip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2890uz3YNwE&t=0s Pro tip - I strongly suggest consuming ginger/motion sickness meds prior to boarding, for those w/o sea legs. During our trip, swells were around 4-5 feet. I almost got seasick, which quickly dissipated once I starting catching fish. Dan Hernandez also offers bay, harbor & Catalina Island cruises, for those looking something other than fishing. Parking is adjacent to Shoreline Village, in which Dan will provide a parking pass for the day. Service from Dan & his deckhand, Richard, was exceptional. I'm hooked on fishing, again! Dan put us on the fish & we muscled them on in. I was fortunate to land the biggest barracuda & calico bass of the trip. He provides everything needed, including a lifetime of knowledge, to ensure a successful fishing adventure. I'll be booking again, soon. Highly recommend!

The Driveway off of 7th Street is easy to miss, as the sign is small. I've been fishing the Ocean and Freshwater for many years. I started fly fishing about two years ago, but only gone two trips. Well, I thought I was fly fishing just fine and catching fish during my yearly backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. A co-worker had taken beginner's casting lessons and had recommended for me to take the classes to improve on my casting. I had visited the facility on the night during a club competition. I saw the fun and camaraderie the fly casters were having. I located the beginners casting class in Long Beach Casting Club's website. The club is the home to many local Master Fly Casting and FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructors. On premises are a casting pond and the club house. Stadium style lights are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings. Class starts with lecture and videos inside the club house, then they are divided into four groups and each group has several instructors to help students with their casting for the evening at the casting pond. The classes run about five weeks, and each week they teach a different cast. Classes start 7pm sharp, so if you are late, you will miss the 15 minutes of lecture and videos. Each week, you will have the same group of instructors who will help you with your casting and any questions you may have. The first night they go over with suggestions on proper equipments, Fly Rod, Fly Reel, Fly Line, Fly Line Backing and Tapered Leader. Class suggest that you have your own equipment, 9ft 5/6wt balance outfit as I brought my lightweight 7.5ft 3wt outfit that I use for my backpacking trips. If you need assistance in assembling the rod, reel, and/or fly line, the instructors will help you, just bring them in at least 30-40 minutes before the class starts. They teach the proper rod grip, Pick up and Lay Down, False Cast, Roll Cast, Shooting Line, Off Shoulder Casts and Line Mending. I thought I knew how to cast a fly line, but I was amazed how much I improved after each class. Anyone can attend these classes, men and women, if you have a desire to learn. I am happy that I had taken the classes at Long Beach Casting Club. I now have more confidence to tackle the Eastern Sierras, Lakes, streams and maybe Bone fish on a fly during my next vacation. The Long Beach Casting club also has rod building, fly tying, on-the-water outings and intermediate fly casting classes. If you are a seasoned caster, but need any help, stop by as previously mentioned, they have instructor or advanced students that can help.
