Me and the boyf have been determined to buy all our fruit and veg from here because it's yummy and local and they're the only one I know of that accept Bristol pounds. We are starting to juice too and this would be costing a lot more if we were buying from a supermarket. There's something really satisfying and almost smug about buying really fresh, a little bit more grubby and wonky, and a whole lot more delicious produce from the greengrocers! Here you'll find wonky carrots, dirty potatoes and odd shaped oranges; just how the come out of the ground (or tree) and how they should be. Gardeners Patch sell pretty much any standard fruit and veg you would want. You wont find too much international out of the ordinary, but you will find inspiration if you're trying to think of a meal to cook. The staff are really nice and very helpful. I asked lots of potato related questions: best for mashing, roasting etc and they were happy to help. I've by a weeks worth (2 bigs bags) of fruit and veg for less than £10 each time I go. They accept Bristol Pounds and 'Text to Pay'

I am wheat intolerant and found a great selection of delicious rye and spelt bread freshly baked. This isn't a supermarket experience and people are keen to have a chat - it's a bit like being in the countryside, funnily enough. It runs on a Wednesday, so if you're working in the city centre (it's based by St. Nicholas Market on Corn Street) treat yourself in your coffee/lunch break and pick up some crusty bread and cheddar cheese. Pawson's only deal in fruit and veg and their knowledge of the product is second to none. Apart from a few sundry items like the odd jar of local conserve, the shelves are stacked high with the vibrant colours of nature's best. I have never been in when there wasn't a queue, always a sure sign that they keep their customers happy, and keep them coming back. There's limited parking on the street, but most of the customers tend to arrive on foot. The staff are more efficient than they are friendly, but without a moment to draw breath, this is understandable.

Numerous supermarkets and other shops have emerged on the street but everyone still tells me Lloyds is the best choice. With daily offers like five avocados for a quid or two punnets of blueberries for £2.50 there can surely be no reason not to come here. Over a century worth of knowledge and a shop that is always bursting with business - it really does sell itself.

The price is fantastic and I truely hope that the supermarkets don't squash this shining beacon of what is so great about buying local produce. The front of the shop is red lettering and white background and is listed as 'Fruit market' above the exite and 'EAST STREET fresh fruit and veg' above the entrance - please take note, we can't be doing with people ruining thier perfect system!

Its not a middle class farmers market, its a proper old fashioned market, with fresh and delicious smelling and tasting fruit at bargain prices. It also has a gorgeous array of plants for sale out front. I keep being tempted by them but am usually on my bike when I go to the market. In a world where local supermarkets sell overpriced bland fruit and veg grown in far flung corners of the world it is encouraging to see such a fantastic market still surviving despite the large Asda down the road. Its got character, cheap prices and delicious produce. Well worth turning your nose up at the inferior supermarket produce and taking the extra stroll up East Street to get some tasty treats. Craving some fresh strawberries now!!

Ah, the good old green grocers…read more I used to be a vegetarian and although having come back to my meaty ways, I still absolutely love my fresh fruit and veg. At the same time I loathe shopping in supermarkets so when I find somewhere like Westbury Veg I find it very hard to leave. Everything I like in a green grocer is here: the fruit stacked in boxes piled on one another, local veg from UK and close to home countries and regular dynamic deals. Even though the quality is top notch and the prices cheap as chips you can still try a bit of a haggle here, a barter there. This is an old fashioned place providing a sterling service, and thus comes highly recommended.
