I've been coming here my entire life, as did my parents and grandparents. (I have a picture of my grandfather with my father as a young boy, standing on the beach with a bamboo fishing pole and metal bucket. The back of the photo reads "Lavallette 1929") I love it here and aside from the nostalgia, it is a treasure of the Jersey Shore. The beautiful oceanfront boardwalk is absolutely spectacular any time of year and is a valuable amenity to the entire area, as well the entire State. The whitest, most powdery sand in New Jersey. And certainly one the the best maintained beaches anywhere. As a kid, going "down the shore" always meant Lavallette to me. Remarkably nothing much has changed: there are larger houses and perhaps more people, but the character and vibe remains unchanged. Happy families, laughing and running children, coming of age teens. First kisses, summer loves. Growing up. Surfboards, beach bikes, crabbing. It's that kind of place. But note: if you're looking for the Seaside Heights crowd here, keep driving. One of my noblest chums rented a beach house about two blocks from the Lavallette Beach. Last year, we stayed a little further south and went to the Ortley Brach, but this one was definitely more warmly received by the crew. We ended up coming to the beach twice as a group, ranging from a solid half day to maybe an hour or two, and then I took a solitary walk in the early morning at sunrise once - definitely got a lot of time in here, which I feel is the number one objective of a shore excursion, regardless of whether you go into the water or not. This is definitely more of a local beach in the sense that it's not teeming with tons of people, and if you want a drink or a snack, you need to bring it with you. While there were lifeguards stationed nearby during our visits, whistling from time to time at wayward swimmers floating outside of the designated flag areas, there really aren't a lot of rules. Beach badges are required but I don't recall the kids at the entrance to the beach ever looking for them. The cleanest beach I've ever been to is Spring Lake, I'd guess 35 to 40 minutes north of here. Absolutely pristine, but it's also very restrictive with TONS of rules about what you can and mostly can't bring onto the beach. I definitely saw a few random pieces of garbage but nothing crazy and honestly it's possible that most of it was just swept in from the sea overnight. When I took my morning stroll I saw some employees cleaning the beach with an intimidating looking machine, so they're on top of it. As an aside, all of us noticed some super aggressive seagulls on the premises that absolutely knew how to recognize which bags had food in them. One particular seagull (which I captured in the accompanying photo so you can easily identify him in the future) physically dragged a bag several feet to intentionally tip over and scrounge around in. It was a very sophisticated operation. Keep your eyes on your shizzle. One area where I do think Ortley beats out Lavallette is access to additional snacks and whatnot. I love to embrace the power of advertising when I'm on the beach, so it's not unusual for me to make an impulse decision on a food or drink item based on one of the famous banners flying by along the coastline. One of those banners boasted an intriguing-looking spiked iced tea, but I never ended up sampling it because we were nowhere near a convenience store. Ortley had several within a block or two of the beach where you could quickly run over, grab a few items and return to your towel within five or 10 minutes. My recommendation would be to stock up and take a few extra minutes before going to the beach to make sure you have adequate provisions for your visit. In terms of the fellow beachgoers, it was a pretty laidback crew. I'd by and large agree with other characterizations that this is pretty family friendly. We saw a lot of content children frolicking around in the sand and on the water. There was one bad apple, a high maintenance teenager screaming and belittling her mother for a solid chunk of the afternoon with no obvious consequences, but I think we can just blame the parenting there and not the Lavallette Beach. Unless you're literally on a deserted island, expect a whole spectrum of people - makes it more interesting anyway. Definitely a chill, welcome vibe. But if you're looking for more action, I'd direct your attention a few miles south to the insanity that Seaside offers. read more

Lavallette Beach was my top choice for weekend summer escapes from NYC in 2019. The house we stayed in was just a 5 minute drive from Lavallette's main beach. It was definitely less crowded than Seaside Heights and had a mini park on the sand for kids, as well as a pretty decent walking trail along the water. There are no concession stands here so be sure to bring your own food/water. We didn't, but thankfully spotted an ice cream truck so we purchased water bottles there. The boardwalk we visited at night (which was in nearby Seaside) was definitely crowded at night, but street parking was easy to find. Nearby houses for rent were pricey, but worth it. You'll need a car if you're staying in the area and want to reach attractions. Definitely a nice quiet retreat. read more

Grew up in Nj going to the Jersey Shore and stayed in Lavallette at several locations. Sadly, these were all wiped out during hurricane Sandy. But Sandy could never take away this fantastic beach town. Clean beaches and a solid boardwalk. We would spend a full 2 weeks here summer after summer in the 60's, 70's and 80's. "Lava" is a small town- blink and you'll miss it driving through the tiny beach towns on 35. It's a quiet, clean place with mostly families who visit during the summer and not too many careless renters or party people. To some that probably sounds awful, but to me it's perfect. When I tell people where it is, I say its kind of near Seaside but NOTHING like it. I swear the sand is whiter and the water is bluer than most NJ beaches. When you can't fly to Hawaii or the Caribbean, this is a decent runner up and only about an hour from NYC. read more

Clean, family-friendly beach. Small boardwalk that goes the length of the town along the ocean, about 10 feet in width. No rides or attractions here. Just a simple ground level boardwalk mainly for pedestrians and joggers, though bicycles are allowed at off peak times. Close enough to the party atmosphere of Seaside so you can go enjoy some nightlife, but far enough away so there's very little riff-raff or noise. No public bathrooms or food stands, so the crowd is pretty much staying at a local residence. If you want food or need to do some shopping, simply stroll out to route 35, where there are plenty of small restaurants and mom and pop shops. There are food trucks and vendors that ride up from time to time and ring a bell or sound a horn, so you don't really have to leave the beach if you simply give a listen. The beach badges are still seem a silly hassle, though at least they've hired lifeguards and are keeping the beach clean. read more

Lavallette Beach is a great place to spend the day if you are looking for a calm, clean beach. This beach is suitable for all ages; It's also a great place to go if you want some solo beach time and don't want to be bothered. I usually find (free) parking along one of the side streets. If all of the side streets are full you can venture down to the main street to find a spot. The downtown area in Lavallette is nice as well- there are a few restaurants, cafés and places to shop. Day passes to the beach, which start mid-June (before that, it's free), are about $7. Lavallette beach is my happy place! read more

I'm a Manasquan boy...cuz there's dope waves to surf there. But...I love this beach because it's calmer than Point and Seaside. It's clean and not too many kids fuckin shit up. It's not a destination for loser guidos and skanky guidettes so that's def a plus. read more

Very clean and beautiful beach! I've been coming here for years. This is a great beach to bring your family to. I feel like Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights, more so Seaside Heights, have dirtier beaches due to the boardwalk and tourists. But Lavallettes beach is very clean and beautiful. And you can easily walk down to Grand Central Ave and go to nice restaurants, do some shopping, get some ice cream, and enjoy the clean town! Highly suggest coming to Lavallette! read more

Lavallette has the cleanest and nicest beaches at the shore. The sand is a lot softer and prettier than the sand at the surrounding beaches, and since there are no public bathrooms, it keeps the crowds and the garbage to a minimum. There is free street parking, which is also a nice perk since in Seaside they practically rob you with the parking meters. read more

Yesterday was my first time visiting Lavallette. I usually go to Spring Lake Beach. It really is different from Spring Lake. Their is NO public bathroom and NO concession stand, however their are plenty of shops nearby within a walking distance. It is definitely family friendly. Parking was super easy considering I went on a Saturday in July!!! The cost for a beach pass was $7.00 per day for anyone 12 and older, $17.00 for a weekly pass, and I think it was either $35.00 or $45.00 for a seasonal badge. Great place and hopefully it stays free from having tons of chains post Sandy. Very relaxing each and everyday. The main strip has lots of great shops, rent a small place because you'll be outside the whole trip. read more

We tried lavallette beach after hearing great reviews. Was disappointed that they do not have any facilities for the public. I felt that they wanted $7 to get on the beach but could not supply the proper facilities for the public. Is it a public beach or just for the residence of the area. Had to leave early with family and find a bathroom. Thank goodness for Wawa. Will go elsewhere read more
