    Great Dane Construction

Great Dane took 75% of my money to renovate my bathroom and walked out on me, leaving me with a…read more"bathroom" that has no toilet, no sink, no shower, no lights, no electricity, no door, and unfinished walls and ceiling. In August, we signed a contract and I put down 50% to begin work. He came in and ripped out my old bathroom down to the studs and then just stopped showing up for days or even weeks at a time. Every week he made promises about returning to work, every week he failed to show, giving me lie after lie after lie, until after 2 months had passed with no bathroom, he told me that he would not do any more work until I gave him more money. When I said no, he refused to come back and stopped talking to me - leaving this space in my bedroom that not only had no floor (or door to close it off) so was incredibly dangerous, it was filled with construction debris, including food wrappers (think: bugs!) and nails sticking out of boards. At this point, his assistant called and offered to get someone to come out to install the floor and tile what was to be the shower if I agreed to pay the next 25% in return and, I was assured, in writing, they would then be out the next week to complete the bathroom. They sent a sub to do the tile and floor that weekend, so I held my side of the agreement and gave them the next check, which they immediately cashed and then never returned again (except 1 morning, a month later, when they sent 3 guys to sit in my driveway for 20 minutes and refuse to come in, at which point I seriously feared for my safety). The next day (this was now in December - nearly 4 months after ripping out my bathroom) they sent me a letter stating that they would no longer work for me. I asked for my money back and they sent me a 2nd letter saying they would not return any of my money to me. ps - the name of his carpenter is Ray.

I wish we could give Great Dane a below 1 star rating for literally stealing 10's of thousands of…read moredollars from us and never completing the job. As per previous reviews, this guy literally does not communicate with you once he has taken your money. His crew is a revolving door of incompetence, for the most part. 320k project, he took 220k out of the bank monitored loan and the furthest we got before we fired him was framing inside and siding on the outside. That said, we still have problems to this day even though the project is finished. The garage floor is not level and it is a heated garage. Because it is not level, we cannot park any vehicles in there that have snow or rain water without water pooling to one side and sitting underneath the wall that frames the stairs. This makes half the garage virtually unusable during inclement weather. Nearly every framed board is crooked and not level. I am not talking about being between the bubbles lines - they are OUTSIDE of that in most cases and the framing is so cocked that there are up to 3/4" shift in level from top to bottom on 12' high walls. We had to reframe the eaves/gables because you could literally kick them off the house after he put the sheathing up. The subfloors are already squeaking 1 year after completion because this idiot put plastic up around the windows during the winter (because he forgot to order windows), but only put that plastic up on the INISDE of the framing, not the outside. Snow accumulated on the window framing and then melted into the addition onto the flooring, sometimes flooding the floors with 1/4" of standing water for days. The floors partially sag between joists now - which had to get covered up by the finish carpenter that we hired. The electrician was paid for the rough in, but because he wasn't done and they had to tear down walls that they framed incorrectly, they ripped out the electrical. The electrician (Efficient Electric) refused to finish the job without being paid AGAIN for the rough in. He was subsequently fired. Similar issues with his plumber, Manchester Mechanical, who walked off the job site with a 1000 shower diverter that we purchased. In addition to that, the plumber didn't align the toilets the same distance from the walls, and installed the tub drain wrong in one of the bathrooms. Took him 9 trips to rough plumb 2 bathrooms and a new on demand water heater yet had the nerve to complain to me that he was spending a lot of time on the road for our job. Back to Great Dane though... they had a crew show up to side the house which put the siding on crooked. That crew got fired and he got another crew out that didn't put on the trim correctly around the existing basement entrance. They used wood that we purchased on a deck to construct make-shift saw horses and then had the nerve to charge us for new lumber that they had access to already and wasted on those saw horses. They ordered the wrong engineered trusses and couldn't figure out how they wouldn't fit on the house despite having architectural building plans to construct from that detailed everything they needed. They refused to insulate according to our requests and tried to double charge us for insulation that was already quoted and approved in the construction loan. One of the crew members was injured on the job because he leaned on a wall between two rooms that was secured by a single screw only halfway drilled into one board. The wall fell down and he ended up going to the hospital for severe and permanent nerve damage in his hand. He quit after that and I don't blame him. He was the only crew member that knew what he was doing. They bounced the check they used to pay the HVAC team. They almost bounced the check they had to pay the garage install crew. In Dec of 2022, they had asked us to vacate the house for a few weeks to do the rough tie in for electrical and plumbing. We left on Dec 19th. They arrived on site to do one small task and then never returned to the jobsite till Jan 17th, 2023 after we called many times to ask why he wasn't there. On the drive home from FL, he calls to tell us there is extensive water damage in 3 existing rooms that he wasn't even supposed to be working in. Turns out his crew forgot to put shingles back down that they had taken off on three sections of the existing roof, causing over 6k of damage to the house and personal items. He said he would fix and pay for the damage. He never did. He stiffed the finish carpenter 3500 in repairs for that damage that we ended up paying that contractor ourselves. Small claims settlement was awarded to us in 2023 for 6k that he didn't contest, but has since refused to pay a dime. Can't wait to see the look on his face when he gets arrested in the coming months for not paying. That will be the only satisfaction we get from Peter Rojas stealing over 55k of our money from our construction loan account and doing nothing for it.

He tiled my shower in 1-2 days; tiled a bathroom floor in 1-2 days and replaced a vanity sink. He has also handled the plumbing for those jobs, so I didn't need to call a separate plumber out. I get the impression that when he starts a job, he is dedicated to that work until it is complete - not juggling multiple contracts simultaneously. There is a LOT to be said for this level of dedication in the contracting world, where I've commonly found that folks a) overcharge b) fail to show up when they promised c) leave the job incomplete d) do a rushed, shoddy job. Sometimes nearly all of the above. Mel has integrity and is trustworthy. So much so, that I've been perfectly comfortable loaning him keys to my house so he can work while I'm away. There are a few 1 star reviews on here that mention communication skills. I suspect those reviewers are used to dealing with contracting firms who have a scheduling person, a crew, and more people onboard to handle a busy schedule. From what I can tell, Mel works alone and handles his own scheduling and business inquiries. When I need to call or email twice for a quote, this is not an issue because I know I'll be getting great service from him when he is able to do the work. I highly recommend him if you need tiling and carpentry work done.
