Specialties
Founded in 1896, Laurel is an independent school for girls, Kindergarten-Grade 12, with a coed Early Childhood program. Laurel has two campuses. At our Lyman Campus in Shaker Heights, Kindergarteners begin their journey through Primary School. Third-Fifth Graders complete the Primary years just seven miles away at our 150-acre Butler Campus in Novelty. Girls return to the Lyman Campus for Middle and Upper School to embark on Sixth-Twelfth Grades. The Butler Campus is also home to our state-of-the-art athletics facilities and Ruhlman Family Center, opening in January 2026.
History
Established in 1896.
1896: Jennie Prentiss established a school for girls in her Cleveland home.
1904: Sarah E. Lyman moved Laurel to Euclid Avenue and then to its current Lyman Campus in Shaker Heights in 1928.
1992: Helen Rowland Marter, the 9th Head of School, grew the Lyman Campus with three additions as well as the purchase of 140 acres in Geauga County, now named the Butler Campus.
2004: Ann V. Klotz, the 10th Head of School, joined Laurel from The Chapin School in New York, NY. Committed to balance among academics, arts and athletics, she has focused increased attention on the social and emotional lives of girls. Initiatives include the development of the School's mission -- "to inspire each girl to fulfill her promise and to better the world" and establishment of Laurel School's Center for Research on Girls. Under her leadership, new buildings were added to the Butler Campus: the Conway Pavilion, the Magic Tree House, the 16,000-square-foot Butler Center for Fitness & Wellness and the yurt.
