Our son's teacher resigned after the first week of school, but the school continued to tell us she was sick for two months. Our son came home with a letter informing us that his teacher resigned, we were informed that a substitute had been in the class along with a teacher aid. Our son was assaulted by another student stabbed in the eye with a pencil. The school failed to notify us of this incident. My husband was informed of this incident when he arrived to pick our son up from school, he was directed to the nurse's office without any explanation. The student assaulted six other children in the kindergarten class before being transferred to another class, where he continued assaulting other children. Our son came home and informed me another student took her scissors and placed them on his neck and threatened to cut his throat. I took my son to school the next day and requested a meeting with his teacher, whom didn't seem concerned nor did she have any type of plan of corrective action. My husband and I withdrew our son and enrolled him in a private school. I returned to the school to collect his supplies and belongings, the substitute teacher advised me that the teacher who resigned took all the children's school supplies when she left. I was only given one pack of pencils, and four boxes of crayons. We spent at least $60.00 on school supplies. I also noticed the kids were just coloring pictures when I was collecting my sons school supplies. Our son attended this school for two months and never came home with homework. When we would ask him how his day was, he always said he didn't do anything. We understand now why he wasn't learning anything. This is a huge disservice to our children and to the parents who trust Prince George's County Public Schools to educate our children.

My son is also in the after care program which runs till 6pm and every day I see teachers who have worked a long full day still at school working on new lessons and projects for the students! To see my son have teachers who care so much about him and work hard to make him the best student he can be makes me so proud of my son and this school. I've literally seen a teacher break down crying multiple times because of how out of control the students were. If the job is too much, maybe it's time to consider a different career, maybe burger king or something. A lot of students openly use drugs and get away with it. If you don't want your child exposed to that kind of environment, I strongly recommend not sending them here. I've seen kids who I never thought would get involved in that stuff not only start using but even begin selling. The only things that helped me get through were having good friends, keeping my grades up, getting support from the few teachers who actually cared about their students, and staying out of drama.

I received my child's progress report for the 7th grade. He received all E's except for Gym. I…read morehave no way to contact his teachers to be proactive with this issue before report cards. Every time I call the school the 7th grade counselor is not available and does not return calls. My child was placed on in school suspension and I was never notified. I feel the school has poor communication with the parents (at least in my case). I would hate to think they are selective and do not want to waste time with kids who present a challenge or have behavioral issues and instead concentrate on the Honor students or excellent test takers that makes the school look good for the MSPAP. Ironically, I was told my calls were not returned because my number is long distance therefore requires a code. Yet when my child is in trouble they have no problem calling me to advise of the suspension. There are no parent/teacher meetings. Greenbelt Middle School does not encourage parent involvement or use technology such as emails to communicate homework, projects and grades I guess on the bright side my child has a locker this year. No lockers were available last year due to overcrowding.
