Laurel is AMAZING and completely SAVED my wreck of a wedding dress.!!!! I had (stupidly) bought a dress that I loved from a replica (knock-off) website. It was nowhere near what was pictured when I received it. I had requested it to be rushed, so when I received it a month later, it was like a big blue potato sack. The hems were all uneven and the fabrics (there were four layers) were not sewn together properly, making the seams bunch in all the wrong places. The bodice was wrinkled and stiff and the dress was terribly uncomfortable. I hated this dress so much that I shoved it into the back of my closet and tried to forget about it. A month before my destination wedding, my MOH asked me about the dress and I cringed. I knew nothing could be done and I was worried I'd waited too long to find something else. She told me about Laurel and that she'd made several dresses for her that were fabulous, so she made an appointment for us to have a consultation and get her opinion. Laurel was super sweet. When we showed her the dress, I thought for sure she would say to just throw it out, that it was beyond repair. That was far from what happened. She went to work immediately, pinning and tucking and repurposing. She didn't seem daunted at all by the immense amount of work that needed to be done or by the incredibly short period of time she had to do it. She put me at ease and told me to come back a week later for another fitting. When I came back, I couldn't believe it was the same dress. She must have worked morning, noon and night on that dress because there was so much work to be done when I brought it in, and now it was all fixed. The seems were smooth, the bodice was straightened, and it was so comfortable. That was the first moment I felt that this could be my dress. Less than three weeks later she called to say she had finished. When we went in and I saw it hanging in the shop my heart filled with joy. I tried it on one final time and finally had that feeling that every bride feels when she knows. This was the dress I was always supposed to have and Laurel knew it was in there somewhere, waiting to be revealed. I applaud her for her tireless effort and unwavering tenacity. She is nothing short of a miracle worker with needle and thread. I'm so happy I brought my seemingly impossible dress to her. No one else could have transformed the lump of fabric I brought her into the couture dream I received in return. I received so many compliments on my wedding day and felt like a princess. God bless Laurel! I found her through the recommendation of a friend, who was having her alter a family wedding dress, like me. My wedding dress was my grandmother's, and 60+ years old. I needed a fair amount of work done: shortening the skirt (with MANY layers of tulle and lace), taking in the sleeves, making the bodice substantially smaller and lower, and fixing a few miscellaneous tears. I had no idea what to expect with this kind of work! Laurel was warm and communicative, and immediately made me feel safe handing over this precious heirloom. She broke down her work into a series of appointments, which I greatly appreciated. It allowed her to make sure each stage of the alterations were perfect. We started with a consultation, and then moved through each stage of the alterations. Her place is small and charming, and my mother, mother in law, and grandmother enjoyed the appointments very much. Pricing was up front, and I thought very fair for the type of work that was done! All in all, I HIGHLY recommend Laurel for your garments, for special occasions or everyday! She is incredibly detailed, has a great knack for finding the perfect petticoats for underneath dresses, is fair for the detailed, precise, and beautiful work she does. Not to mention she is a delight to meet with. I'm kind of sad I don't have anything more to alter, because now I don't get to go see her every month! After I purchased my wedding dress from David's Bridal and started the search for a seamstress, I was so happy to find that Laurel was still doing alterations and was willing to travel. (Laurel had helped me with another dress a few years back when she still had her shop in Sierra Madre.) She is punctual and responds to messages quickly (even when she's under the weather). Laurel did an incredible job adjusting the chest area of my wedding dress, as well as attaching a belt, sewing in cups, and shortening the skirt so it just barely brushed the floor with my heels on. She also fixed up my mom's dress (removing poufy, sequined 80s sleeves) and my sister's bridesmaid dress (tightening the shoulder straps and shortening the skirt). Her turnaround time was relatively quick for how much work she had, and it was so nice for her to do house calls. read more

My Tailor went on vacation for a month so i checked yelp a lot of tailors in town (palm springs ) took off for august I had a suit pants sport coat needed sleeves hemmed and slacks hemmed no cuff very simple I tried to use yelp to get a quote and to see who is available I entered my ph number but nothing came up a few days later laurel called me she said she has free pick up and delivery she is local and she can come by I said great the day of appointment I called to verify she was coming she said she can not she has company the second appointment laurel canceled as well its fine I stay at home mostly I am a disabled veteran when she showed up she was very angry some how it was my fault she got lost in my condo complex she went on about how it screwed up her day it is very easy to drive in and park in front of my unit but she was really angry and taking out on me I did not even know her after put everything on and she marked it with pins she wrote out an invoice for $175 stating free pickup and delivery a week went by and she was scheduled to drop clothes off at my condo I called her she said she is entertains and we would have to make it end of week I said great I was always very nice even though I was getting emotional abused by laurel lol the crazy thing was she was not lost she parked in front of my unit but them started walking the wrong direction so it was not my fault or the fault of the complex any way the alterations where fine accept the linen sport coat was not pressed as promised I had to take it to a cleaners to press it also when she was dropping off the clothes she said its 195 not 175 because of the 20 pick up and delivery charge after she stated it was free and she even wrote it on invoice she has no shop she works out of her truck she bring supplies and alterations platform if she had a local shop I would of gone there any way Laurel was not nice at all very narcissistic no manners and never allows you to say a word lol when she dropped off stuff she had more to criticize and did not come in or have me try anything on just from out side asked for check and gave me the clothes Laurel is a character dose not think of the client only her needs her rough nature Tom Boy of personality dose not go with being a seamstress but her pick up truck she very much Laurel I see several others commented on her being nasty I would of never taken her for a seamstress a cowhand yes lol ya know who she reminds me of Donald trump lol good luck to all thanks for letting me vent Peace S. read more

I have to get this off my chest before anyone else experiences Laurel's nasty attitude. I rarely complain about people but recently a friend urged me to review my experience. I went Laurel's to have my wedding dress made. At our first meeting Laurel was confident she could make what I wanted and she quoted me a reasonable price for the dress and the veil. All I needed to do was buy the material. She was nice to us that day and I left feeling confident. I met with her a few times after because the dress was custom made which means there were more meetings than if I had bought it off the rack. She turned into a a really nasty and abusive person. She told me I was fat and needed to lose a whole lot of weight (I was 135 on my wedding day), on more than one occasion she patted my stomach and told me to do sit ups, she told me my teeth were crooked and I would ruin my wedding pictures, she made fun of the beautiful pearl necklace I received as a gift and planned to wear on my wedding day. The last straw was that she wanted $500.00 over the original quote. I paid it because I wanted to get the F out of there because she blurted it out in front of a group of people in her shop. As a whole I had a humiliating experience and I don't recommend going to her for a wedding dress. Your wedding is supposed to be a fun and happy time and no one should spoil it. read more

I went to Laurel's purely on a recommendation by my MIL, no questions asked- I'm not completely sure if they were friends, friends-of-friends, or just simply knew of Laurel since Sierra Madre is a small town. My dress is a sleeveless, sheath dress with an A-line skirt, a lot of lace, beads, and sequins. Timing- 4/5 stars- I went to Laurel's to get my wedding dress altered- about 6 months before the wedding. I went in for about 4 fittings, each of them were spaced 2-6 weeks apart. My final fitting was 2 weeks before the wedding and everything was completed in a timely manner so no complaints here. But sometimes I wondered why it took so long between fittings when it seemed like not very much had been done. Attention to detail- 3/5 stars- I bought my gown off the rack so Laurel said she would fix the beading/sequins because many were loose and hanging off the dress, but she didn't. It was a minor detail but the loose beads were noticeable and it bothered me at the end of the day because she said she would fix them and did not. She also made it a point to mentioned the amount of time she spent on the beading to justify her high price even though she did not touch up the loose beads/sequins. For the most part, I agreed with her on her suggestions and she was mostly receptive to my input but not without arguing with me first (refer to professionalism/attitude section). Pricing- 3/5 stars- she initially quoted me $200-$400 for the alterations which was a lot less than the place where I bought my dress (they wanted $600). I was honestly thinking it would be around $300 based on the alterations I needed but I'm not an expert. At the end of it, she charged me $450 (cash only) and I did not think it was worth it especially since my dress was $399+tax = about $433. The nice thing is she let me pay in "installments". Each time I came in for a fitting, I paid her $100 so it was nice not to have to pay it all upfront. The alterations I needed were: 1. Remove the train (I could've/should've done this myself) 2. Remove the bottom tier and shorten the hem of the lining. The skirt was 3 tiers, and by simply removing the bottom tier, the length was perfect (I could've/should've done this myself). The lining just needed to be shortened. 3. Take the dress in- I am a size 00 and my dress was a bridal size 8. It needed to be taken in from the back and front (bodice). This was probably the most difficult part but probably not $450 difficult. 4. Shorten the straps Professionalism/Attitude- 1/5 stars- Laurel had a tendency to get snappy and scold me for the littlest things. For example, when she was pinning up the lining of the skirt, I was standing facing the mirror on the wooden stand thing. I was trying to be helpful so I turned 90 degrees so that the area she was pinning up was directly in front of her. It turns out what I did wasn't helpful and instead of just asking me to turn back to face the mirror, she snapped at me saying, "Why would you turn like that?!?!" It wasn't like I messed her up or made her prick her finger by turning so I didn't understand why she had to scold me. It was then that my MIL told me that Sierra Madre business owners are generally cranky people (thanks for telling me that after the fact) but that doesn't make it ok to be rude and snarky for no reason at all, which she did several times. Another thing she did that irked me was basically call me fat. When I bought my dress at the bridal salon, they clamped and pinned up the dress on me and it looked fabulous (specifically the booty and hips). Since I have more booty than boobies, I was hoping to recreate that fit with the alterations. So I told Laurel that I wanted to look sexy and I wanted it tighter around my hips/butt (but nothing like mermaid-dress tight). She said she didn't want to make it too tight because it might be difficult to sit down and it wouldn't be a good idea if I were to gain weight before the wedding. Now, I can see how she said that as a precaution because weight gain can happen, but I assured her that I wasn't going to gain any weight because I have been 5' and 95 pounds for the last 10 years and no amount of stress has ever caused me to gain weight. She didn't want to take my word on it so she basically ignored me. At the next fitting, I told her again that I wanted it tighter around my hips/butt but she still argued with me about the hypothetical weight gain possibility and didn't do what I asked her to. BTW I didn't gain any weight! Bottom line- if you have ample time to spare (3+ months), patience and come to fittings prepared (shoes, hosiery, questions, money, etc.) things should go smoothly. Don't expect to be coddled. It'll be more like having your own conservative, cranky, judgmental mother doing the alterations instead of a professional. The shop smelled of cigarettes by luckily my dress didn't. Not outrageously expensive but more than what I expected to pay considering she didn't do everything I asked. read more

Laurel is basically AWESOMEEE!!! From the first time I went for my wedding dress fitting to the last fitting before my wedding, she was an absolute sweetheart to work with. She helped me with suggestions on how to alter the dress to make it look better and she was SO RIGHT! When I wore the dress I felt amazing. She did such an outstanding job on all of the dress details. If I could give her a rating above 5, I would! Oh and not to mention, when I went to pick up my dress she surprised me with a bride bag made out of the dress material that she had trimmed off. Thanks Laurel for making my dress the best. I've been taking my clothing to Laurel for alterations for over a decade now. She's fixed them all, is 'pricey' but worth it in that you do get what you pay for. No problems, speedy service (unless it's May/June wedding time! Brides LOVE going to Laurel's for fittings as well as making gowns.) She's very knowledgeable about all types of fabrics. Laurel will give you an honest opinion if something does not fit right or look good on you, some people may misconstrue this as a bad attitude. Although Laurel did an okay job, she made this an unpleasant experience.She is a gloomy person and was not at all helpful. When I requested straps put in my sleeveless gown to hold in my lingerie straps, she told me to get a long line strapless bra instead! (Who even sells those nowadays?)She was very stressed about meeting deadlines on other things and I told her I had lots of time and tried to get her to relax ( should not have been part of my job as a customer). She took in the dress, shortened it, decided on her own to eliminate the lining in the lower part of the dress, and then did put in straps to hold my bra straps. The dress did not come out looking as I had hoped it would ( not having had alterations done on anything in years, I may have been too optimistic) and was quite costly. I had to call her and remind her and ask when it was going to be ready. I have since had something else altered elsewhere and the experience there was terrific. So not go to Laurel's unless you want to deal with someone who is not happy in her job and puts it on the customer. read more

I went to get a pair of women's slacks hemmed, as a trial before having the seamstress alter my wedding dress, this past week. I had read the negative review on yelp,but had a strong friends review, I figured I would find out for myself. Laurel was to the point when I dropped off the pants and got measured, I let her know I needed them by a specific date and time, which she said was doable, nearly being a week. The price of $25-30 for a simple hem seemed steep, but I wanted to see her work and ethic. I arrived to pick up they pants the date and time discussed, actually 15 mins earlier, already sharing with laurel that I had work to follow and the pants were for a special occasion that weekend. She never showed up to her shop after I waited for her an additional 20 minutes, almost becoming late for work. I didn't have the pants for my event and laurel lost my trust and confidence needed to get the wedding dress job. I went to pick up my pants the following week, they fit fine, laurel scolded me for bringing a different pair of shoes with me than the pair I was fitted with, though I told her I would and they were of similar height. When she presented me with the bill, I said $20 should cover it considering the late service without any notice (and inconvenience). She completely turned on me, became irate, and unprofessional. She then said $20 was fine. I shared with her that I wanted to talk with her (wanting to talk to her about the wedding dress), she wouldn't let me say more than a word before arguing, saying that she hadn't felt well and was only 5 minutes late. I recalled for her that she was 15-20 minutes late and had earlier sad she was 'stuck at the bank '. She again blamed me for bringing another pair of shoes. I told her she was performing unprofessional, she then shoved my payment back in my face, told me to take my money and leave, 'our business is done ', she was too " busy for this ", and stormed away from me while I was trying to calmly speak with her. I was really caught off guard by her poor performance and display, but was glad my wedding dress wasn't brought into her drama.
