I was up in the mountains for a few days and on the way home, ran across this place right before exiting onto Highway 40. I am so glad I did because this may be the best Mexican Restaurant I've ever eaten at.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a salsa bar, which always a bonus in my opinion.
They have a ton of mixed drinks to choose from and the beer they were advertising on their wall (and have specials for on Mondays) was one of my favorite state breweries, Catawba (White Zombie, Farmer Teds), but that's a whole other review.
Their menu was vast, with items I'm not used to seeing repeated on most of the menu's I've seen in other places. Also, the prices were dollars lower per dish, on average, than I'm used to seeing in Charlotte. It was very affordable.
They had a larger than usual selection of vegetarian dishes, many of which would work for a vegan if you asked to hold the sour cream and cheese. I bring this up because a lot of Mexican Restaurants I've tried offer one thing, veggie fajitas. This place had a handful of options, and I'm not talking about the stupid "vegetarian" section where it's all just bean and/or cheese versions of the usual. They actually had vegetables in their dishes.
One other thing, the veggie dishes don't automatically come with mushrooms! That's HUGE for me.
I was thinking, "great beer, great menu, low prices, wow! Loving it already... now lets see the entrees."
Since I am not 100% vegan and eat seafood, I had a shrimp fajita burrito with no cheese and no sour cream. I was a little worried, maybe irrationally, that the shrimp might suck since we are far from the beach, like that matters, but man, they did not disappoint. Not only was the dish tasty, but all of the entrees were plentiful and not a single person could come close to finishing their plate.
This is not unusual... but for the prices, I was expecting less than the average plate, but ended up with more. It tasted delicious and everyone at the table agreed that this is a "must frequent" place to eat when in the area.
The service was good. No complaints. The waiter didn't talk much, which isn't a bad thing except that and I didn't even know about the salsa bar until someone at the table pointed it out to me. However, I'm not knocking the place because we had a quiet waiter. I kind of prefer that, actually.
I only wish they were closer to me. I don't know if I would drive one and a half hours here for dinner one day, but I am certainly considering it. A road trip for great food might just be in the future, or it can at least be extra motivation to take more trips out west more often.
