Great trail! Lists of beautiful scenery, animals and views! My kiddos walk this one with me. We love the patriot trail and we get a great little surprise with the flag pole at the end. Please do watch out for snakes. I've seen two on two occasions. One rattler! Also watch for mountain bike riders as they breeze through the trail. The one thing I do wish is that people would clean up their dog poop. There are several bags lining the trail.

Great short hike! I'll need to bring a pen next time to sign the guest book. Incredible view at the flag :)

OC and SJC have great dog friendly open space.

Love the scenic views and smooth trails for running at sunrise. Thankfully plenty of free parking at top of Las Ramblas, the road that leads to trail head. Easy to find Las Ramblas road off the 5 going south. Sorry to say trails look a lot alike, so it might not be hard to get "turned around" if not careful. Might be best to bring phone with Google Maps, for help if needed in returning to trail head. No trash or dog poop seen during 6 mile group run. Looked like Colorado or foothills in Europe.

I gotta hand it to my friend! Not only is she beautiful she has a knack for finding beautiful places!! For our latest adventure we were going to go pick Strawberries but lo and behold the patch near her place was closed on Easter! Since we couldn't do that my friend remembered seeing a video of a sea of wildflowers in full bloom (which was at Las Ramblas Trail) and after grabbing a bite we made the impromptu decision to go! The trail isn't too hard to find. Just drive down Camino Las Ramblas till you hit a dead end and that is where the trail begins! I'm not sure what this place looks like normally, but during this Spring California superbloom the trail is nothing short of being serene, secluded and romantic AF! The flowers here are all of the same variety (Mustard plant) so it looked like a vast expanse of yellow on top of yellow on top of yellow! We maybe hiked a mile or so of the trail RT (it goes for longer) because we were too busy having fun taking pictures, always in search for the perfect shot! The trail itself isn't difficult but it does have some steep inclines. In a nutshell, if you're into photography, nature, hiking or romantic places I'd implore you to go before Spring is gone or else you're missing out!!

Dog friendly! First of all, do NOT PARK AT THE DIRECTIONS PROVIDED BY YELP! I made the mistake of parking there, and there is a small dirt loop trail where I got confused thinking it was part of this trail. Parking at the address listed added an extra unnecessary mile to our trip. Basically you just want to use that address as a reference, but then continue ALL THE WAY DOWN THE STREET - it dead ends right at the trail head. Excellent place for working out, many tough hills. Some good views, although this time of year was not as pretty as some of the other pictures, everything was dryer. No shade, so be cautious and make it an early morning hike. I did see quite a few people with off leash dogs (even though signs say they need to be on leash) so use caution there as well if you have a dog reactive dog. I wish I lived closer so I could give the hills a go. The main trail (Las Ramblas) is not marked for some reason but the smaller, off shoot trails are. Either way, fun place to explore and have a good adventure.

"I was angry with my friend: I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow." --William Blake I have a confession to make. I am harboring a very nasty grudge against the Las Ramblas Trail. A. Very. Nasty. Grudge. See, Cathy S. and I signed up to do... what we thought was... a fun and friendly casual 5k. We had no idea of the monstrosity we were about to face off against in Las Ramblas. ROUND 1: (DING!!) Ingrid V. & Cathy S. VS. Las Ramblas Trail: FIGHT! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/las-ramblas-trail-san-juan-capistrano?select=6bFK7PSnVhiD9tlHtkLg5w#6bFK7PSnVhiD9tlHtkLg5w Everyone takes off running. Why are my legs already burning 3 minutes into this hike / run? And why in God's name are the first two inclines (according to my hiking app) an average of more than 20% grade? Seriously? We are now at the end of the pack. Two inclines done. Effing FINALLY. We can breathe now, right? HAH! Las Ramblas flips me the proverbial bird as I round the corner to see this twat of a hill: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/las-ramblas-trail-san-juan-capistrano?select=6bFK7PSnVhiD9tlHtkLg5w#098p5IAqv0hA9BueIngrMQ That would be Patriot Hill. It thinks its all cool with its 35%-45% uphill grade. Worst 10th of a mile I have ever met in my entire life. At one point my app tells me the grade on this thing is 48.7%. Is that even safe? Shouldn't that come with a warning from the damned surgeon general or something? Screw this hill. Anyway, I don't even know how Cathy and I got up, but we did. A few four letter-words later, I looked up and saw this: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/las-ramblas-trail-san-juan-capistrano?select=6bFK7PSnVhiD9tlHtkLg5w#jUiJacuRMAcrsj2NZVzKxA Cool huh? Actually it got cooler when I turned around. We went up so high we saw the ocean. THE BLOODY OCEAN. Dana Point Harbor to be exact: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/las-ramblas-trail-san-juan-capistrano?select=6bFK7PSnVhiD9tlHtkLg5w#wu5qQrT77xW146mljUuZBw The rest of the 5k was less eventful. There were still some rough spots and steep hills, but they were all chump change compared to Patriot Hill. The views were awesome for the length of the run: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/las-ramblas-trail-san-juan-capistrano?select=6bFK7PSnVhiD9tlHtkLg5w#7MD-7Z4ZsULyO6DG3aZFdA So why the grudge if we completed it? Well, we really didn't complete it. The race officials let us cheat a bit and shaved off half a mile for us, opting to let us bypass the "up & back" to the flag poll along the ridge of Flag Poll Hill. Our result? A bit over an hour and 10 minutes. I was dead last... with the last of the main pack coming in around the 50 minute mark. Plus, we got a freebie half mile cheat!! Needless to say, I have it out for this trail. I've been hiking some pretty rough trails lately, and getting in better shape. Next time I meet up with Patriot Hill, I hope to quote a certain Nancy Sinatra song. OH RIGHT... My like vs dislike list... LIKE: 1. Incredible views 2. Ass-kicking workout 3. Easy to get to, near the 5 fwy 4. Great parking (when they have the gate open) HATE: 1. Patriot Hill 2. Patriot Hill 3. Patriot Hill 4. Patriot Hill ...to be continued...

Cindie N.

Very nice, quiet, hilly trail. When you get to the top of the Patriot trail, it's a reward you will find - the US flag, a mailbox, and a cute tree branch full of cuties. The view at the top is awesome...you get of the ocean and the mountains. I must say one thing great about this trail - ample parking. No need to worry about the parking.

J B.

Loved this trail not crowded during the week.. trail map confusing at first .. past the gates so straight and towards the left first.. put in few miles much narrower before figuring out we weren't going the right way. There are marked signs for patriot hill and harbor view trails . Patriot hill is no joke ! Pretty flowers hawks animals even snakes!! Ran into two including a rattlesnake so beware!!!! At the top of patriot hill is a cute mailbox and flag w a memorial and great view of the ocean

Harbor View Trail
Christian K.

Fun trail for walking, hiking, biking, or running. Lots of irresponsible dog owners on this trail so watch your step. There are some good inclines on Patriot Trail and Harbor View Trail is exactly what it says it is. I would like to see the parking lot at the trailhead opened up. It's always empty and closed. As another reviewer said, there is no shade. So if you're planning on a longer outing, be sure to protect your skin.

Very steep but the view was well worth the hike. Don't want to take the steep trail down. Take care of your knees.

I love this trail except the trails aren't marked very good so I got lost. Other then that not very crowded, dogs are allowed.

Thousand Steps Beach is gorgeous and the cave makes it totally worth all of the steps down to it…read more There are only about 219 steps (not a thousand). The steps are no joke though. They are pretty steep and concrete. I wouldn't recommend them for little kids. Make sure you go at low tide. They close the cave area when the tide comes in. The cave is on the far left side of the beach. You have to go over rocks to get there. It can be slippery. There were lifeguards on duty. It's so fun to explore inside the cave. We parked on PCH. There is no parking lot. I definitely recommend going in the morning. It's hard to find parking if you try to go in the afternoon/evening on a weekend/holiday. There is a crosswalk and stoplight at 9th Ave. to cross PCH and then the entrance is right there. There is a bathroom, but it is the typical beach bathroom--not very clean. There's a volleyball net on the left side of the beach. There are no restaurants/cafes. Bring whatever you want with you.

We went on a Monday and it was pretty busy lots of college-aged people, maybe even some high schoolers, but the beach itself still felt pretty secluded, and there were hardly any kids around maybe like a handful of them. It was overcast when we went, which actually made it perfect, not too hot and super comfortable. Parking is street parking only, just make sure to read the signs carefully. Once you head down, you'll find restrooms and showers right at the bottom of the stairs, which is super convenient. The restroom is clean earlier in the day (before noon), but like most beach spots, it gets a bit wet as the day goes on. There's plenty of space to set up and relax. One thing to watch out for--seagulls! They will go after your food, so definitely cover it with towels if you're hopping in the water. The stairs themselves are pretty narrow, and people usually stick to one side going down and the other going up, so just be mindful and take your time, they tend to also get wet as the day goes on so it's a little slippery.

It's a hiking and mountain biking trail so be aware of your surroundings if you're hiking, especially with a big group. I don't know how many groups I saw walking 4-5 people across, but I guess that's just hiking etiquette in general. With steep ups and downs, this trail is lined with beautiful flowers and plants. It has several offshoot trails, making the trail itself open to multiple routes. At the top it gives a nice view of the surrounding San Clemente area and the Harbor. We've been before on a spring afternoon, and I have to say that's the best time of year to come. It's after the morning fog burns off and you get clear views of the ocean with lush tall green grass and gorgeous wildflowers everywhere. As with all trails in this area, be careful to look out for snakes. Other than that, it's a semi-challenging 4.5 mile loop with great views while getting a nice little workout in. This would be a great training loop for backpacking-steep steep grades for uphill and downhill training. Bring water, wear appropriate shoes with treads and wear sunscreen-totally exposed trail.
