I had such high hopes for this place. I'd read many good reviews about the food and atmosphere, and…read morethe photos of their specialties were mouth-watering. Unfortunately, for us anyway, they didn't live up to their promise. It's a fairly long taxi ride to get to. People talk about the "amazing views," but only a couple of tables can see them, and they are not at all amazing. Just a jumble of houses and utility wires with some hills in the background. The restaurant itself is very charming and warm, and the staff is polished and welcoming. Things started off well with the nopale appetizer, a very delicate but umami-infused dish. But then the main courses were very disappointing. I had the sous vide beef short ribs with a tlilchili sauce on a bed of a few black beans and red onions. Sounds great, doesn't it? I was expecting "fall-off-the-bone" short ribs. Instead I got a dried-out chunk of meat that I could barely cut with a knife. Terrible. I could only eat part of it. My partner ordered a chicken dish that was bland and also a bit dry. We both ended up leaving half of our entrees - which we never do. We were still so hungry, we had to get tacos from a stand by our hotel afterwards. Not worth the effort or the price in my opinion - such a let down.

We had an absolutely amazing meal here on our last night in Guanajuato…read more We spotted it after visiting the Diego Rivera Museum and then remembered it a couple days later when looking for a nice spot to have dinner on Dia de los Muertos. However it took us a very long time to get from our apartment to the restaurant because there were so many interesting events happening around the city, that we stopped to watch several of them. We didn't arrive to the restaurant until 8:30PM (Sunday night). The host informed us they closed at 8PM but he would ask the kitchen if they would still serve us. Not wanting to put them out, we declined his generous offer, thanked him, and crossed the street in search of another restaurant. A minute later, the host ran out of the restaurant and across the street to us and said they had a table for us and the kitchen would be happy to serve us. We thanked him profusely and followed him inside the restaurant. The decor is lovely and modern and of course proudly showcasing several photos and paintings of Frida and Diego. We immediately noticed the clientele was just a little bit different than what we'd seen at other restaurants in the city. Meaning, everyone else was speaking English (not the staff, but the other patrons). We quickly observed that the other customers were most likely ex-pats, being that the menu was a bit pricier than other restaurants in the area (but still not expensive by any means). Our host informed us that they'd actually been busier that evening than during Cervantino, which meant they were out of a lot of food. A woman, who I believe was the owner/chef, came over and listed off what they still had available, which was only about 20% of the menu. Wow! This place is popular so make sure you get here early! My husband asked if they had any paella left and she said she only had a small amount left and that we could have it free of charge since it wasn't enough for a serving. It made an absolutely wonderful appetizer though. I've never had paella before, but if it all tastes as good as what she brought out, I'm a huge fan of it now! Absolutely amazing. We're still talking about that paella. Another item we can't stop talking about is the tapenade they serve. It was the best thing I've ever put on bread. Period. Every time I took a bite, I had to make a "MMMMM!" sound. We couldn't figure out how they get just the right amount of spice in there, but it's perfect. Just enough for give you little bit of spice without burning your mouth. The spice heats up your mouth for an instant, and then immediately dissipates so you can enjoy the rest of your food. Amazing. We both settled on the beef filets, one made with a red salsa and the other with a black. These pieces of steak were H U G E and delicious. I'm not a big meat eater, so I could only handle about half of one before tapping out, but the meat was so tender and flavorful, it was unreal. This restaurant is just a delight. The service was friendly and beyond amazing, and the food was out of this world. We will definitely make this part of our rotation for our upcoming trips to GTO. Next time we'll arrive on time, though.
