When I used to think of free publications, I would think about Apartment Guide or the used car…read morenewspaper that you pick up on the way out of the grocery store (you know...the one that smudges newspaper ink all over your hands, arms and clothes by the time you're done). Mountain Dreams Publishing has given free publications a new meaning. At around 50+ distribution locations, you can pick up any of their 7 free magazines that they produce every few months: Sabroso! - The region's complete guide to restaurants in Las Cruces, the mountain communities, El Paso and across the border in Juarez. Also, info on great weekend culinary getaways. Ask about our Southwest Dining Club Membership. Ventanas - A well established magazine featuring new and vintage homes in the region plus gardening, landscaping, and new product ideas, art, wall finishings and interior decorating. Plus a bonus Home Improvement Ideas Magazine. Home Improvement Ideas - An annual magazine that provides home owners and designers with articles on the latest trends on home design, remodeling, wall treatments, floor coverings, lighting, bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor living, landscaping and interior dcor. View the latest products being introduced by national manufacturers. Living in Las Cruces - A full Report on Las Cruces and the surrounding region covering local and regional government, education, culture and the arts, communities, medical information and the housing market plus a directory of local websites and key telephone numbers. Heart-Women of accomplishment and those who have overcome obstacles in life tell their story, plus great articles on all women's issues from health, beauty, dating, parenting and much more. The Real Estate Guide of Las Cruces - The city's largest real estate company, Steinborn GMAC Real Estate represents their new and existing home line up with over 200 listings to view, plus information on mortgage lending and other seller and buyer services. Showcase of Homes/Parade of Homes - Each spring and fall the custom home builders in the region showcase their creative home design and new products. These resources are so well done, the articles are well written and the printing is so high quality (better than some big name magazines), I felt guilty taking it for free. They deliver great reading material that I can pick up anywhere around here. It's great that this area takes such pride in itself that our free publications are so professionally done. This company handles many of the local print jobs and they also specialize in web design.

Recently we found that the Las Cruces Sun News has moved from its downtown site. Don't know what…read morethis means for its future but was sad to see the sign gone from the building we walk by every week to go to the Farmers Market and other sites in our historic neighborhood. It's tough to operate a successful newspaper in a small city. Tougher still to be unique and independent next to a city 5x larger. But it's disappointing to find so little news or interesting writing in our local newspaper. Even the Sunday paper is a thin disappointment. It's not for lack of things happening, or for lack of talent, but for lack of publishing much of what's happening. Timeliness and thoughtfulness are important. Was there a fire by the train station yesterday? If so, what are the ramifications for our city? We now look at social media to find out. The internet has been an obvious challenge to newspapers. Yet it also offers opportunities to gain readers. There are billions of readers open to the next great source of information, if it answers the need for real information and relevance. Many people love NM in general and Las Cruces in particular. Many more could if given reasons. (Like, a competitive daily newspaper.) I wish this paper would reach higher. Offer deeper storytelling through timely reporting, creative layout and photography, diverse columnists, inviting website. I think quality print and virtual news can make more money than ever when people's brains and needs are respected.

Sign up online. But have to call to cancel. When you do call to cancel, they force you to give a…read morereason why you're canceling. If you don't, they won't let you cancel. (I just told them to make something up because I don't have a reason) (sidenote: how is that not illegal). Then after I'm audibly upset and telling them I have a crying baby and to please just cancel, they continue to try and offer discounts. Those unfortunate employees are forced to go through a script and I'm filled with frustration. It did not prevent me from cancelling my subscription. I'm not sure anyone wins.
