Based off the recommendation of a friend, my mom and I came to grab some pupusas at Las Comadres. It was easy finding parking in the street upon arrival! When we walked in, we were greeted kindly by the staff in the restaurant. My mom and I admittedly did our research prior and knew what we wanted to order. The gentleman at the front was very kind and helpful whilst taking our order. We took a seat and we were brought some chips and salsa! The salsa was very flavorful and had a slight kick. After a few minutes, our food arrived. We dug in! Everything was sooo delicious. The pupusa had a perfect ratio of everything with the filling and the curtido went perfectly. The side of rice and beans were cooked great and were very yummy. My mom and I tried the plantains and were pleasantly surprised. We weren't surprised they were cooked well but rather that the plantains themselves seemed to be at the perfect state of ripeness too! Overall we had a really pleasant experience at Las Comadres. Admittedly one fault is my mom and I had some acid reflux which we think was due to the curtido. I rarely get acid reflux so it was a surprise. Customer service provided by the young man at the register is great! He's very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Unfortunately, we were disappointed at the pupusas- they lacked flavor other than salt. The horchata was too sweet and had none of the authentic flavor we were looking for. This horchata reminded us more of the Mexican horchata instead of the Salvadoran version (lacked the semilla de morro). The curtido lacked fermentation and again, the authentic flavoring. We are from El Salvador so maybe the expectations were too high in terms of wanting the authentic flavors. read more

If you are familiar with Salvadoran food then review is not for you, but if the is a new cuisine for you, maybe my review will I treat you. Great food and always friendly service. I Really love this restaurant for Salvadoran food. I am not of any Hispanic heritage, so fortunately their online menus (in added photos) do a great job of giving a basic translation of primary ingredient for each dish, and a quick online search can add some more details.. Though this is a newer cuisine type to me, I did recognize "some" similarities to part of the Cuban & Caribbean styles, including sides of plantains, yucca, a differing takes on horchatas, empanadas, and tamales, but all delicious in new styles to me. Not familiar with food from El Salvador? Well this a great place to get Pupusas (stuffed flatbread [think thick fresh tortillas]). So stop by and give it a try l. A new family favorite for lunch or dinner favorite now, dine in or take out. RECOMMENDATIONS: Any combo with 2 Pupusas and favorite sides is perfect, such as #2, #4, or #5, and if you are thinking Combo 4 or 5 (#5 with Revueltas Pupusas is my favorite) you better be hungry as you might find yourself with than you can eat, if you can really put a big meal away consider getting one extra Pupusas, and a side order of Casamiento; a side of both smooth fried beans & Salvadoran style rice (mild yellow rice), that can be mixed together (casamiento) , or not. For Pupusas if you have never had before I highly recommend starting with the following 3 types: * Revueltas (stuffed with finely shredded pork, smooth fried beans and cheese [queso Fresca?]). It is my personal favorite. * Queso con frijoles (stuffed with smooth fried beans & cheese [firm melted white cheese; queso fresca?] * Queso con loroco y frijole (cheese & loroco* [vine tips]). * loroco is a Central American vine thats tips are used in this case like a sautéed mild green vegetable with a very pleasant taste, very complimentary with the cheese or cheese and bean stuffed Pupusas. Curtidos is a must have side condiment too! (a slightly fermented cabbage salad I can only describe as a blend between fresh cole slaw and Kimchi), it is delicious as condiment to Pupusas and several other hot (as in physical temperature) entrees. It become a very craivable addition to the fresh off the grill Pupusas to me. My family really loves the tamales (mild chicken and potato), they are just kind of too bland or mild for my taste. I also love their empanadas de plantano (fried sweet plantain stuffed with a firm cream filling) as well as the [sweet/ripe & fried] plantano that comes with several of combinations. Salvadoran horchata is DIFFERENT than the Mexican style you are use too, not as 'milky' and stringer spicing in my opinion but a makes a wonderful became to have your meal. Another drink; ensalada if an extremely refreshing tropical Juice type drink with tropical and apple flavors that includes finely chopped apple and a little chopped cilantro (I think?) that is also very good, don't be afraid to try it if you like tropica fruit agua frescas or apple type flavors. read more

Driving between Monterey and Los Angeles, I was recommended Las Comadres for authentic El Salvadorian food specializing in pupusas. There are options for a la carte or combos. I opted for Combo #1 consisting of 2 pupusas, plantains, and an El Salvadorian style tamale for about $11 to $12. The waitress suggested I try 1 pupusa with some type of "flower" and the other with meat/beans/cheese. I enjoyed both. The plantains were cooked just right. My favorite part of this combo was the El Salvadorian style tamale, fluffy and light. For beverages, I highly recommend the ensalada (tropical fruit juice). It was so refreshing, even on a cold winter night! The drink wasn't too sweet and there were bits of fruit within. It's difficult to describe Santa Maria as a destination for a foodie but if you're into Latin American cuisine you have to come here. Maybe I'm just full of bad luck but I am fairly certain that English doesn't happen here. That's cool though, the menu has numbered items and has translations. I previously gave this place a good review but tonight I brought friends that were here from out of state and they told us they would only serve us food to go because they closed in 20 minutes. I stated that they didn't have a sign saying we couldn't eat in the restaurant after a certain time and that they should close if they didn't want to serve customers. He said he would ask if we could eat there and we over heard him say a rude comment about us asking if we could dine in since they were open. The server came back and said they would only serve us to go so we left. I told him that it was their loss and not ours and that they looked bad doing that. Yum! I found one of my new favorite restaurants in this town! I was fortunate to be browsing through the Santa Maria Sun newspaper this afternoon and ran across a small advertisement. I know pupusas when I see them! I drove over right after work and came to find a typical Salvadorean restaurant, bright colors, pictures and paintings from the home country, and friendly welcoming people. I ordered combination #1 which is 2 pupusas (your choice of fillings), 1 tamal, and platanos maduros (plantains). The waitress started me off with chips and salsa. Chips were hot and the salsa was flavorful. My plate came after about 10 minutes and everything was piping fresh. I got pupusas de revueltas (pork, beans & cheese) y de calabazas (squash) and cheese. These are good on their own, but what really brings pupusas together is good curtido--the Salvadorean kimchi or saeurkraut. The tangy pickled cabbage helps cut down the heaviness of the cheese. The tamale and platanos were simple goodness. I was so excited about the place that I wanted to tell them about Yelp and how people like the restaurant, but my Spanish skills are less than average, especially since I've been watching Korean dramas all week!
