Lara's Labyrinth is located near the Mission Hills part of San Diego in an industrial area. There is no parking lot, but there is street parking across from the building. They're on the third floor, and the elevator didn't seem to be working, so it was a bit of a trek up three flights of stairs. We arrived ten minutes before our start time for the Cannibal room, checked in, and waited, and waited, and waited. We finally got started a little over twenty minutes past our scheduled start time. This room has an option to add a live actor for an extra $20, but we decided to pass on that. Waivers can be completed online before arrival. The room has a split start. I was in the smaller part of the start, and there were a few puzzles for me to do, but the other person was doing the majority of the work in the bigger part of the first room until we were united. Even though we didn't opt for the live actor, we could tell there was somebody in the next room a few times which added to the creepy factor. The room leans towards mostly linear and has a good mix of combo locks, logic puzzles, mechanical puzzles, memory puzzles, a keypad, and some back and forth between rooms. The decor is definitely gory and it is dimly lit. Hints are given over a speaker, but they were often garbled and hard to understand. The room is ranked five stars difficulty and I would agree it's a hard room. We escaped with only two minutes left. POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: I've never had anything bad to say about an escape room, but after having done 70 of them, this was the first one that felt like it had some potential safety issues. Having to stand on a wobbly stool to reach something above, standing on another chair and handling some bare wires overhead to turn on something electric, an uneven transition between rooms which I stumbled on and almost face planted twice even though I knew it was there, and a desk drawer that came out way too easy and narrowly missed smashing my feet. Be careful! Our game master Nasir was cool, and he was happy to answer questions at the end. The cost was $54.50 per person for the two of us, and the price drops with three or more people. They sometimes have discount codes on the website when booking. Even with the negatives, we would still return to try some of their other rooms when we're down in San Diego. read more

This was so much fun - such a blast - and I definitely want to come back for more. The puzzles just kept on coming, one after the other, and slowly, slowly, and sometimes with the game master's help with clues over the intercom...we solved the puzzle and were let out of the room!! We did the da Vinci room and it was so interesting, all this stuff from his life and work - really well done. I only ding the place a star because there was nothing to drink, the soda machine was busted, and I really wanted a water. Also, the building really could use a "directory" outside next to the door where the stairs are because I didn't know if we were going the right way. An escape room that stands alone at the top. Hands down one of the best escape rooms I've ever done. My party went here for a bachelor party weekend, not really knowing what we were getting into. It turned out to be so good that we spun the block and did another one the day of our return flight. This location is on the third floor of an open building, and the elevator was so janky that we thought it was part of the experience, after about 7-8 seconds of rough shaking, the elevator doors opened, and we made our way to the actual location. The business was operated by one man Nasir, who was the best "host" someone could ask for. The escape room we did (Cannibal room); had a live actor, and Nasir honestly deserves an Oscar for his performance. Out of respect for the business, I won't share details of the room, but I will say that the puzzles were the perfect blend of rigor and entertainment. I hate to give a 1 star because the owner was super nice. But, it's just an awful awful room (cannibal). We've done over 50 rooms in different cities and almost always escape with only 1 hint. Clues made no sense and you constantly have the game master nudging you every 30 seconds over the intercom when you haven't asked for a single hint. Completely ruins your focus and takes you out of the game. It was oppressive. They also just opened a couple doors for us before we got the clues. Bruh... Just not fun, not a fun experience, and a really bad room overall. It was also a cluster f at check in. No one was there for a while and tons of people waiting. Also the most expensive room in the history of escape rooms which even further highlights the poor value. read more

I just finished the Sheepshank Redemption room at Lara's Labyrinth with a group of 5 people. The time limit is 90 minutes and we got out with time to spare!! Everyone in our group had a lot of fun!! We can't wait to try the other ones. One person in our group spun the wheel and got the jackpot! So now they can bring a minimum of 4 people, and get 2 of those people free. Parking: free street parking but there are a couple labeled spots in the garage. The gate was closed when we got out around 8:30 PM, so there's a walkway further down to get into the garage. The gate will open when the car approaches. PS they are on the third floor. LOWKEY elevator is haunted. Use the stairs. Thank me later. I do have one suggestion. We tried one mechanic over and over (early in the game) that we found out later didn't work. This was really frustrating. After having done several escape games, you know something is wrong when you're stuck in the beginning. It made me question whether everything else in the room was functioning or not. We had issues with the mirror too. Also the game master said they do prompt certain things - just fyi for people who don't want hints. read more

Best escape room ever!! Ive done maybe over 20 escape rooms by now all around northern and southern CA and this one had the best production and puzzles. My group and I did the heart of Bastet first and it had elements that no other escape room had. It was soooo good we signed up for Da Vinci after and that one was sooooo challenging but we were able to get out with less than 1 minute. For our group of 4 we are looking forward to checking out bewitched and cannibal next time I'm in town. We've done probably 150 escape rooms in 15 countries, and Lara's Labyrinth really surprised us with its room experience and quality. Don't let the unassuming industrial neighborhood and generic building fool you...there's a great escape room experience hiding up on the 3rd floor. We parked right out front on the street on a Wednesday evening and took the stairs up from the street. There were 2 of us and we did the Davinci room which we're told is the hardest room. We only needed a few clues but it took us the full hour (maybe a bit longer) but we're pretty stubborn and prefer not to have clues if possible. Our game master Nassir was great and tried to only help us when we really needed it. The room is really challenging but in a good way...the tasks are not impossible to figure out and they all make sense once you realize what you need to do. There's lots of very impressive mechanical functionality...this is not your momma's old school lock and key room. Very high tech with extremely well designed challenges. I thought we've done all the great escape rooms in San Diego but I was wrong! Can't wait to come back and do some of the other rooms. As a room escape enthusiast I can highly recommend Lara's. read more

Our group did the Sheepshank redemption and the room decor and atmosphere was fantastic! Our "warden" Armando was spectacular at giving us just the right nudges we needed to get through the room but it was a shame that some of the technical portions of it required us to manually tell him what we were going to do (ex: inputting keycodes). For the price of the room I would expect that this is something that is functional and takes away from the experience a bit... Puzzle wise this was a challenging room and the rest do look fantastic so we're definitely coming back at some point to try out the rest. Overall the production value is there and I would recommend this to Escape Room enthusiasts! For Sheepshank I would definitely just recommend 4 people and not anymore as it can get a little crowded. read more

Lara's does a great job with the decor of their lobby and rooms. Overall, Sheepshank Redemption was a good game. We were a little confused with a couple of the puzzles, but appreciated the helpful clues from Nassir. Having seen the movie (Shawshank) was a bonus. Take you're reading glasses, you'll need them. The lighting in there played tricks on my eyes at times. It was just my husband and I in the room, but we made it out in time! :D Make sure to arrive ahead of time. Although there seemed to be a lot of street parking, we had to circle through a few times to find a spot (10:30ish on a Saturday). Then, when we were leaving, we got stuck in the elevator. Luckily, we made it to the 1st floor (they're on the 3rd) with the doors slightly opened. I pressed the alarm button to get someone's attention. Ive done most rooms in The Escape Game (UTC) and the red door escape but none compare to the design in these ones. Canibal (w/live actor) was the single best escape room I've ever done, and the intro to the room (pitch black room / spoken word intro) was really immersive, which many escape rooms fail to tap into. read more

Labeled as "Next Gen" games, the escape rooms at Lara's Labyrinth incorporate 3rd generation escape room mechanics and design. The top tier production values places players in immersive sets to solve thoughtful puzzles which do tend to be more interactive and physical than mental. It is a different experience but an appreciated one! I've done most of the rooms here -- Cannibal, Bewitched, and Heart of Bastet -- save for the DaVinci Challenge. The aforementioned escape rooms utilize the 3rd gen elements heavily while I hear their DaVinci Challenge room has more traditional puzzles with locks and decoding challenges. I did their Cannibal room with a group of 7 people and when they employed a live actor. Highly recommend to do this room with a big group to get the full experience. The live actor greatly enhanced the scary aspect of the room and delivered in creepiness. Heart of Bastet is now one of my all time favorite escape rooms which seems to happen to most enthusiasts. With the exception of one puzzle, this room was EVERYTHING; it had an immersive set, intriguing backstory, brilliant mechanics, and non-formulaic flow between the different rooms. Bewitched, while fun and offered in an "Adult" version, was a bit too childish for me and with some malfunctioning puzzles, but I digress because the rooms, overall, are in a class of their own which is a must visit for newbies and enthusiasts alike. read more

It's been about 10 years since the last time my friends and I did an escape room. When we had tried solving an escape room for the first time, we didn't solve it in the time allotted and this was when we were younger. For our second escape room experience, one of our dear friends planned for us to conquer Lara's Labyrinth and we were attempting this with some of the same people we had done our first escape room with. You would think that with us being older, we'd be wiser and would be able to solve Lara's Labyrinth (LL). We didn't solve it in the allotted time, but we all had a blast trying. LL is located off of the 5 South freeway exit Old Town Avenue. The escape room is near Old Town, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), and the San Diego International Airport. It is next to the rock climbing center Vertical Hold, next to Advance Repro Graphics, and it's in the same building as Culture Shock, Cali Auto Sales, and Make Good Coffee Co. LL is on the 3rd floor of this building, so you'll need to ride an elevator, and it's next to World Mission Society Church of God. As you enter what looks like any normal office, you immediately notice elaborate props and feel like you're about to be teleported into a different world. On walls you'll see escape room memes, advertisements about the different escape rooms, and different rooms with really cool looking sets. Before starting any of the escape rooms, you'll need to take a pic of a QR code, so you can fill out a waiver. The staff here were really friendly and provided quality customer service. They answered our questions thoroughly and made us all feel welcome. My biggest complaint was their muffled speaker when we asked for clues because at times it was hard to understand what our Gamemaster was saying. Our group consisted of 7 people and we were ambitiously attempting to solve Davinci's Challenge, which was the most difficult escape room they had. As I indicated about their elaborate sets, Davinci's Challenge was no exception. For this escape room, you are separated into two groups where you initially go into two separate rooms to start off, but you end up getting access to both rooms. I really enjoyed seeing the intricate props, the design of the rooms, and experiencing all the different surprises. I'll be honest, at times I felt like I wasn't contributing and was just wandering around, but that's the fun of it. We definitely needed all 7 of us to solve this escape room because I honestly don't know if we could have done it with less people. Although we wanted to solve it utilizing the least amount of clues, you are going to need to ask for help and don't feel bad. If not for us asking for all of the clues, this escape room would have been impossible to solve. Once we acted upon the clues, it was exhilarating to see the results of us solving the various puzzles. When we had done our one and only escape room 10 years ago, this was during the infancy of escape rooms. Doing our second escape room at Lara's Labyrinth, escape rooms are now more common. Although we didn't solve this escape room in the allotted time like our first time, the best part about doing escape rooms is the quality time spent with longtime, dear friends. read more

Two of my friends wanted to take us to do something fun and different for my birthday, so they took me for my first ever escape room experience. I had been curious about them so was excited to go. Lara's Labyrinth is located in the warehouse district of Hancock Street. Parking was free and easy on a Sunday evening. It is located near Old Town, making it a great spot for a dinner and escape room outing. My friends and I had chosen the "R" rated experience, which I didn't know existed, but basically just meant that there was a bit of adult humor and a few 4-letter words. We were invited to get into character by putting on hooded robes on our way into the escape room. Jonah was our tour guide for the night, and I think he is the owner. He told us a bit about the storyline of our experience and the mission that we had to complete, as well as a couple of escape room rules. We were notified that we had one hour to complete the mission. Once inside the escape room, it was very dark. We took out our phone for light in the beginning, but later came across a lantern that served as a black light to help uncover clues. Our escape room guide played a variety of characters, sometimes just as a voice, sometimes as a puppet, and sometimes in a full costume. He had a variety of voices and accents, and was entertaining. He was a one man show! As we hadn't been to an escape room before, he fed us some clues so that we had some idea how to go about solving the puzzles. I'm not sure if we would have made it out in time otherwise. We ended up making it out of the escape room with a little under 2 minutes left and an angry witch chasing us. I'm not sure how typical this escape room was, but we had a great time, and it was an original way to celebrate with friends. read more
