It was the sugar rush I needed for my drive back to San Antonio. My visits to Brownsville are getting more and more interesting with these new gems popping up. So, before breakfast commenced and the coffee from Chiapas was poured for those attending, we opened the box to discover the colorful mix she had chosen. The flaky brown and tan biscuits were the first plate we tried with our homemade strawberry jam and cream cheese. I tasted mine plain at first to get a sense of the composition. The resounding taste of butter in the near bread told me of the quality was on par with any I had enjoyed before. Biscuits are not difficult to make, but doing so consistently is important. Then we tasted the dark brown gingerbread pigs, known as "puerquitos", which were gloriously fresh with a dusting of confectionery sugar. I was impressed again and the subtle taste of piloncillo found its way into every taste. While it's mildly unfair to review a place based solely on its takeout, El Fenix made a very good impression on me, and I look forward to visiting in the near future.

Food consists of breakfast bakery (muffins, pastries) and cooked items, light snacks like quiche and croissants, and ice cream. We had lattes (per usual). Temp was great but the coffee itself was just OK, not the best. For food we had the turkey quiche and the omelette muffin. The quiche was bland, overcooked. The muffin was much better, and was definitely the better of the two selections. Staff were friendly, service was quick! With all the coffee shop options available in SPI, not sure we'd go back. Do not recommend IMHO...
