Empanadas
Eloy C.

I wish they were in San Antonio. All the sweet bread is awesome especially the empanadas. Can't get enough when we go visit.

Best empanadas in the valley. Lines typically first thing in the morning, only a small wait. The piggies are small but also very good.

Staff is nice and the pan dulce tastes delicious for days (especially when you stock up if you live out of town).

You can watch the bakers making the pastries and breads fresh through the glass window behind the counter, and everything we had was fresh, artisan, handmade, and tasty. Day-old banana bread -- very good, even a day old. Chocolate croissant -- not a ton of chocolate, more of your traditional size with just a little inside. Strawberry cream Danish -- very tasty and fresh. Cream puff -- super moist, with perfectly tender dough. Really good bite. Cinnamon roll -- very large, so don't underestimate the size. One note: the cream/icing on top was just too much -- too sweet and too heavy-handed. It would've been better served on the side to dip into, because the parts where we took off the cream off were really good. (We microwaved it for a minute once we got home.) Coffees -- a couple of solid coffees, nothing too crazy. One thing to flag: for five or six pastries and a couple of coffees, it ran us around $50. Pro tip: This isn't somewhere I'd take the kids. It's more of a spot for someone who wants a really good baked good and a coffee -- and be ready for the prices to add up faster than you'd think. Would recommend, and would return.

Walking through the doors is nostalgic invoking your own walk through history. If you've never been you won't be disappointed and begin your own experiences. Grab a box with one of everything and you still will have plenty more to sample. Ive traveled through many states and places specializing in this sweet pastries but never find anything as delicious. The staff is very friendly eager to help and always smiling. Even the owner will be there in the front lines assisting. Like the olden days. You can even get a cup of coffee and talk story. They also have a few grocery items in case you need to grab milk, eggs and a soda. The ambiance is just down home. Maybe I'll see you there grabbing your favorite piece of "pan dulce". They have quite a selection of freshly made items. I would suggest getting there early if you are looking for something specific as they did have several empty trays. Everything we ordered was delicious as usual. I did not see or get to try any barbacoa or tamales, but maybe next time. This place has a history and is an important part of San Benito. If you're ever in the area, put it on your list of places to visit.
