I have to admit that in a city where the food is generally stellar--I don't think we ate anywhere we didn't like--the Landsdowne cafe, a small neighborhood cafe near where we were staying, was among the best, if not the best.
It's an unassuming place, run by a young couple, Jerry and Min, who have got to be the nicest people on the island. (But who isn't nice in Hobart???) But unassuming is not how I would characterize the food. It was stellar. We came for breakfast one day, loved it so much, we made sure we fit it in again before we left.
I ordered the Chilli Scrambled Eggs, served over toast, which had some serious zing. I loved it! My girlfriend ordered the Mushroom Benedict, which she absolutely loved. The next time, she got the Halloumi Bruschetta with an added poached egg. In addition to the food quality being high, the presentation was utterly amazing (like 5-star amazing).
Oh, the place is small, and it is hopping at peak hours. Booking is recommended. That said, for neither of our visits did we have a booking. Jerry was kind enough to squeeze us in nonetheless. Did I fail to mention how nice Jerry and Min are?
If you're not staying in the neighborhood, it's an easy bus ride from downtown (the 540 has a stop right outside the restaurant). Definitely add it to your itinerary. It's worth it. read more
