I discovered this little gem completely by accident due to Swiss Cottage Tube station being closed over the weekend. Approaching my friend's house from a different direction brought me across this exquisite little ckae shop & tea salon From its name, you could probably guess that they source their tea from Ceylon (Sri Lanka). What is less obvious from the name is the collection of wonderful French style cakes and patisserie by chef Masayuki Hara. The closest thing that springs to mind are the perfectly formed pastries you find at Yaautcha in Soho There is a small seating area at the back of the shop but with eat in prices costing more, I would guess most people would take away one of these little sinful treats for secret indulgences at home. The chef is a super friendly Japanese patissier who owns a small shop just around the corner from Waitrose in Finchley Road. There's not many places to sit down, but if you do have the chance, definitely get a pot of Ceylon or Green tea with rose; it's a perfect way to spend a nice afternoon in the weekend (opened on Tue- Sunday but closed on Monday) I have made numerous trips here but my favourite is still the Green tea strawberry cake. The sponge is fluffy and it goes perfectly with the sweet whipped cream and tangy strawberry. The chef often brings out the freshly baked cakes on the table so it's tempting to have more than one. The apple tarts are also amazing but slightly on the heavy side so maybe no seconds if you get this! read more

Should I write this review? This little oasis only has 3 tables, and I don't want them to run out of anything the next time I visit. Alas, it's my duty and more importantly Lanka deserves the recognition and for their name and reputation to spread throughout London. Holy #*$& the cakes are good. This patisserie has the French classics, but led by a Japanese chef all their cakes and desserts have the brilliant lightness associated with Japanese bakery. Do they use less butter? More Eggs? Less Flour? Whatever it is, it's brilliant. Flavours are excellent and not overly sweet and presentation is impeccable. We had the baked cheesecake and Strawberry cake which were amazing. At around £3-4 a slice it may seem pricey on the surface but once you've had a taste you'll be tempted by another. The ceylon tea I had to accompany the sweet treats was also good and service was friendly, polite and helpful with a touch of Japanese class. It's a relaxing place to escape the city and just enjoy a moment with your slice of heaven. Not your typical French pastries but excellent in its own right. I would gladly make the 25 minute walk there just for a slice of Lanka's delicate sweetness. OMG I wish it was open 24 hours. read more

Another example of gorgeous looking french patisserie with a distinctive japanese twist. The chef is a joy and keeps bringing samples from the kitchen below to the restaurant and handing them out to clients (and making you want to eat the whole place), announcing what's coming next and always glad to hear compliments - in his case totally deserved as the cakes are wonderful (to taste and to look at). Me and my friend shared the salted caramel tart + rum baba + bread and butter pudding and they were all awesome. This is a gem of a spot, a patisserie with a Japanese chef at the helm. You'll see this mash-up in some of the ingredients used: green tea, adzuki bean, sesame. The shop is small but bright, with several small tables at the back for those who can't wait to make it home before tucking in to their treats. The macarons have garnered quite a following in London. They have - rough guesstimate - 6 - 8 flavours on offer, ranging from the standard vanilla to the more exotic Earl Grey. I like them very much; what they might lack for in crispness is made up for by taste. The authentic almond of the meringue comes through perfectly, and the flavours of the filling are punchy, not masked by sweet. I am particularly fond of their raspberry macaron: the berry shines through tartly - a perfect counterpoint to the sugary meringue. I haven't tested the layer or mousse cakes (works of art, really) but can speak to the croissants and macarons. Last time I was in there was also a croissant "casserole" (for lack of a better term) on offer; an elevated version of bread and butter pudding, I suspect. Lanka also sells a wide range of tea, as well as Monmouth coffee beans. I love bakeries that understand the appeal of a good cuppa alongside their treats, so Lanka's strategic decision got an extra nod of approval from me. Last but not least, the sugar comes not just from the product - the staff are extremely sweet. Helpful, considerate, they never rush my (very important!) choice, and always pack things up carefully. Adorable Japanese French patisserie is small, but filled with many choices of delicious looking desserts. We went with a matcha, strawberry cream layered cake and a mango coconut mousse. The matcha cake was light and airy like the cakes in Japan. Delicious with a cup of tea if you can snag a spot in one of their tiny tables. I did not like the mango mousse. It wasn't flavored strong enough and had too much gelatin for my taste, but my dining partner really liked it so to each their own! Next time I would love to try the passion fruit tart. Just cake I like the cake I had: Pear mousse and Green tea pudding, this earned 3.5 stars. The taste were very delicate as it was not too sweet and heavy but I felt something was missing. Maybe some accent was needed. I found the appearance of cake were too modest. I could not feel eat me message from them. I ate this roll cake at a home party brought by one of them. There were 8 Japanese people at the party. But all of them already knew this popular cake shop. also have been there before. It seems quite popular especially among Japanese since the taste of those cakes are very delicate and exquisite like ones sold in Japan. As for this roll cakes, the fresh cream inside was quite different from foreign cakes.I was blown away with that. I didn't expect I could eat such a Japanese cake in London. This is without a doubt one of my favourite patisseries in London. The sublime flavour combinations, deft precision and execution is truly art worth be holding. Top tip: you must try everything green tea based. I understand that some of the combinations might not be for everyone (but why?!), however, there's always something here for everyone - from the adventurous to the safe players. There's an excellent tea and coffee selection on offer. Be forewarned, the service is super friendly and you really wouldn't want to leave! Oh and disability friendly too boot. Went in intending to get the chocolate roll cake and walked out with that, the green tea chocolate gateaux, the green tea strawberry cake, the lemon tart (meant to get the passion fruit mousse but oh happy accident), vanilla and sesame macaroons (the latter being so good that I can't wait to go back for more) and couple of other cakes that I forget. And their selection of teas is not bad either. I worried that I might regret my impulsiveness but my concerns vanished with every bite I shared with my friends. Like I said, so yummy! The cakes were light and fluffy, with delicate, not too sweet flavours. The lemon tart had a delightful zing that reminded me of home-made lemonade. The service was good. Love this place, best fresh cream cake in london. I live somewhere near canary wharf, and i drive almost an hour for these cakes, we order cakes from lanka for all the big days in our family, I have tried most of the cakes and definitely strawberry green tea cake or rolls are the best. I would strongly advise go their earlier to avoid disappointment, especially on special days. The customer service was friendly and really helpful in helping me pick out the best pastries and including a special birthday message as well in chocolate. Happened to walk by this place the other day and popped in for a tea and a monburan. The tea, a green/strawberry blend, was nice, but the dessert was less so: the Mont Blanc had the normal toppings, candied chestnut w/fresh cream and frosting on it but instead of puff pastry there was a muffin underneath... also no tea sets means that my cup of tea and cupcake monburan set me back an amount significantly northward of a fiver... Exceptionally tasty!! I live so near to this place but never noticed until one of my friends took me. Everything is so prim and proper including the cakes!! I had a Salted Caramel Tart with an Earl Grey tea which was like a piece of heaven after a long day at work. The cakes are not heavy or too sweet - a French patisserie with a Japanese touch - which makes it even more tasty. Love this place and definitely coming here more often! read more
