A resident reported being (either positive for or a covid exposee. Quickly, a letter was published and delivered to all residences stating we are all (including staff) to be tested for Covid weekly. This afternoon, I received a phone message directing me to report to the health services for the test. Other (minute) problems have been dealt with quick and professionally. Is there enough to keep one occupied. Yes, if one is interested. Transportation to medical appointments or local shopping is available. The residents, on the whole, seem (to me) to be friendly, outgoing and caring individuals. Is it perfect here - of course not, but, IMO, it is certainly a cut above of other "independent living" facilities in this area. I recently had moved into another facility near here. Absolutely no comparison. When I was first looking for an independent living facility last July, I came across the website for Merrill Gardens. My only thought, at the time, was this place was so new, offered so much - that it was out of my price range, so I, to my regret, did no further price checking. (WHAT A MISTAKE). I wasted 4 months of my time. Are there negative points here. Of course, but they are minimal and easily foreshadowed by the positives. However, the negatives are, IMO, strictly personal. 1) The food, while quite good, is sometimes served lukewarm and 2) sometimes questions are answered differently depending on which member of staff is asked. If I were asked to give Merrill Gardens - Columbia a grade of 0-100%, I would not hesitate to grade it at 97% John Bruneel

HOWEVER the HR at this facility is TERRIBLE. The woman named Shelby runs HR and she is truly the most unhelpful and miserable person I've ever met. Besides that it is a beautiful safe community that is really tight knit like family. You or your loved one would enjoy the atmosphere.

You will walk away thinking your loved one is going to be well cared for and supported. After the move in, that level of attention disappears. From that point on, you are largely on your own. If your loved one is fully independent, this facility may work. If they decline, do not assume the care will adjust to meet that need. In my experience, it did not. Care here is inconsistent and unpredictable. There are a few staff members who clearly care, but others appear disengaged. The larger issue is management. There does not seem to be a consistent standard being enforced, which leaves families relying on chance instead of a dependable level of care. Basic expectations were not reliably met. Cleanliness, housekeeping, and routine support were inconsistent. Issues that should have been handled quickly were not, and follow through was lacking. This does not feel like a resident first environment. Too many decisions seem driven by what is easiest for staff rather than what is best for the people living there. Communication follows the same pattern, slow, unclear, and requiring repeated follow up. If you place a loved one here, plan to stay heavily involved. You will likely spend more time checking on their care than you expect, simply to ensure basic needs are being met. At this cost, the level of inconsistency is hard to justify. You may get good care, or you may not. That uncertainty alone should make any family stop and think very carefully before making this decision.

Her clothes were dirty, had food spilled on them and not cleaned up. They do not do any activities with the patients. Don't be fooled by the menu, they feed the residents hot dogs and fried potatoes, mostly what I call a middle school cafeteria diet. She always seemed to be in some sort of catatonic stupor from the medicines they gave her, and I found her and the other residents asleep in their wheelchairs most of the time. Once a friend came to visit her and found a dirty diaper on the floor in her bathroom. The friend went to the desk to tell them and then went back and stayed with my aunt for another TWO HOURS and no one came in to clean it up. My aunt is now at a different facility, and she is doing so much better. She is getting healthy food, participates in all the activities, and is in a clean, nice environment. They continued to bill us after she moved and still will not return our calls. Please do your due diligence. Just because it is expensive, does not mean it is quality care. Stop in at random times, so they do not know when to expect you. Go at meals and see the food for yourself. But better yet, do not put your loved one here. It is absolutely awful.
