Empty Fafsa building on a Tuesday

No one is ever working in the Fafsa aid building nor does anyone answer the calls. Why hasn't there been anything done about this. I had to come to campus because the financial aid department input incorrect information regarding my loans after only being able to reach out to someone via Twitter.

Pow wow event

This review is for the Pow Wow festival that was held at this college. We were looking for something to do this weekend and heard about it from various sources. We were not disappointed. Although small in scale there were plenty of shopping to be had here and also the competition which was going on inside the Gym. Stayed a little bit to watch the competition, and then shopped a little bit. Ended up with a Fry bread which I tell you, if you have not had it before, prepare to be addicted. Yes I said Addicted. Everyone was so friendly and nice there. When they saw us standing they brought chairs for us. Lady was nice to do that. Parking was pretty easy. If you are wanting to go, today is the last day they are going to be at Laney according to the flyer online. Until perhaps next year?

This college is attend is fantastic. It is super easy to navigate. There are signs everywhere. There are wonderful folks who volunteer in The Welcome Center who are available to answer any questions regarding the college and enrollment process. We've got some pretty great professors who care about their students passing the class. I'm glad I'm a student and would recommend others to enroll and attend Laney

Some student wrote this in the library in the FL section. Yes, it says what you think it says.

Even though I live in SF, Laney is easier to get to that CCSF because it is literally one block from the Lake Merritt BART station.

I wish I were writing a review of the facilities, instructors, class quality, or my experience in a…read moreclass, maybe even showing a picture of my cool finished art... but I can't, because of failure after failure on the part of the management. I received a glass flameworking class as a surprise for Christmas, paid for, with the option for me to move it to a number of dates. I chose the March 8th date. It's been THREE MONTHS of multiple calls, voicemails, and emails per week to The Crucible. We have gotten ONE single response the entire time: something to the effect of "so sorry we dropped the ball - we'll get back to you," then.... nothing. None of our calls or emails or voicemails have been returned. The March class date has now passed, and not a single offer of a refund or a reschedule. We're doing a chargeback, which we really hate to do since it's so detrimental to the business, but... if it weren't for all these other reviews I'd wonder if this place even exists? Three full months of effort on our end and not a single useful human answer?Hoping this review plus the chargeback gets us some sort of resolution.

This teacher stayed in one location which was farther away from where I was seated. I couldn't hear her instructions as a result. I managed the best I could. But she became increasingly frustrated with me even after I explained I couldn't hear her clearly. Bad experience totally negated my previous good experience.

Incredible community-oriented coding boot camp…read more After working in tech for a decade, my curiosity got the better of me: WHAT exactly are developers doing all day? - What exactly is a "pull request?" - Why do you keep saying "deploy?" - How can changing a line of text take two weeks? Basically, I wanted to know if nerds had been pulling one over on me for 10 years. So I decided to learn how to code. In the past, I've tried to learn this stuff on my own but I always hit a wall. Programming is hard to learn from books and online tutorials alone. And while there are many boot camps in the Bay Area, most are full-time, five-figure affairs designed for people committed to a dramatic career change. 6-8 weeks of full-immersion was not what I was looking for. Kickstart Coding is different. They offer after work and weekend classes which means folks with full time jobs can still learn to code. They are based out of Oakstop (a community space) and host free Meetups where you can get advice from other coders. And they are far more affordable than the other options. If you don't have a laptop they will even let you borrow one for free. They really seem committed to helping all people learn how to code. About the class itself: my first class was March 2, 2020, which was only a few days before the State of California mandated that folks shelter in place due to the Coronavirus epidemic. In only a few days, they had converted the program into an online class. At first I was concerned about the lack of hands-on instruction, but they made it work. They offered office hours and review sessions if you needed extra help. Each class begins with review of the previous class' concepts to keep you up-to-date. Then we'd go through a series of problems that escalate in complexity. Then we would learn new concepts. The pace of the class is fast. You don't have time in class to complete all the exercises, and you're going to have to do at least 10-15 hours of work per week outside of class to keep up. And we learned a lot. We started from the bottom, learning command line basics, and by the end we were deploying(!) like real web applications. It's a full stack boot camp which means you'll learn both back-end (Python, Django) and front-end (JavaScript, React) frameworks. This program is great for anyone wanting to learn how to code, but who doesn't want to quit their day job. The instructors are committed to helping you learn and understand, and what you learn is very practical, i.e., the kind of stuff you'll need in an actual job setting. There isn't a lot of theory (I'd recommend the free Harvard CS50 if you want that kind of thing), but the instructors were always willing to explain and why and how of certain concepts. I highly recommend Kickstart Coding.

Kickstart Coding provided a great programming bootcamp experience and was a great option for me as…read morethe part-time course structure allowed me to continue with my full time job, while paying a fraction of the price of the other programming boot-camps in the area. The classes were structured to be very hands on, with multiple instructors present every lecture to help as needed. All of the instructors were very knowledgeable and friendly. Class material was structured in a way that people of all skill levels could succeeded, while more advanced students would stay challenged. Lessons consisted of a short lecture time, then hands on problem solving for the new materials. Each lesson would be 3-4 lecture blocks, and 3-4 activities. Activities would start with simple hello world types of problems and increase in difficulty. In addition to the lectures, there was weekly homework and reading, followed by a group project at the end of the course. Looking back, I am amazed at the amount of material we learned in 4 months. Overall, I feel like the course material was very applicable for anyone wanting to do software development, and it was clear that the curriculum is a labor of love for Michael B. If you are motivated to learn, I would highly recommend Kickstart Coding

Although the issue of human trafficking is slowly gaining public awareness, traction, and funding-there is still a deep sense of stigma, shame, and limited expectations about what survivors of human trafficking can accomplish. Annie Cannons is an innovative agency that provides coding boot camps to trafficking survivors. It gives survivors a way to earn a livable wage and start a new life in the tech industry. What separates Annie Cannons from other agencies is not only their belief in the capacity, intellect, and resilience of survivors-but how they have equipped their survivor clients to become ready for the tech world and coach/support other survivors, in turn. They have a survivor leadership training model and they have partnered with multiple organizations and survivor leadership groups around the country to help build practical, real world projects that students can work on to enhance and build their skills. The curriculum is robust, trauma-informed, and has been through multiple, thoughtful and well-designed iterations. The leader of the company-Laura Hackney-is an amazing and dedicated human rights advocate ate and a full stack software engineer. Previously, Laura managed the Program on Human Rights at Stanford University's Freeman Spoil Institute. She was also the Senior Research Associate for Stanford's Anti-Trafficking Project in the Mekong SubRegion. She is a UC Berkeley and Stanford educated advocate, leader, and visionary. I had the privilege of helping to connect some human trafficking survivors to their early coding bootcamps through a partner organization that provided case management survivors to survivors. The team at Annie Cannons-including the wonderful Jake Bedsole, product manager, are deeply invested in helping to transform the lives of survivors and developing/strengthening community ties where survivors can connect with one another & leaders/employers in the tech world. This organization is visionary in its approach and has changed numerous lives by offering a practical, meaningful source of employment and advanced job training. They have an excellent rating on charity navigator and the BBB-they are transparent, ethical, and are committed to supporting and advocating for survivors. Survivors are then trained to lead the organization and gain employment skills-and their curricula is thoughtful, trauma-informed, and their learning communities are built on respect, collaboration, and support. A truly amazing and wonderful agency!
