You can get all your basics here, but if you want fine wine and other specialty items you should supplement by going to the nearby cheese shop, butcher, fish monger, wine/spirits shop, and bakery. The staff is very friendly and helpful, prices are reasonable, and it's clean with plenty of variety. Heads up: we have to use cash here. Like many other stores in Diemen, they do not accept credit cards of any kind, and would also not accept our debit (visa-issued) cards. They do accept Maestro debit cards (which are European and we don't have). So come with cash!

They bought the whole area, c1000 and also the part where Rabobank used to be at the Brazillie Winkelcentrum, so the supermarket is huuuge! When it first opened I found some of the lines moved toooo slowly but they have a thing where the 4th in line doesn't pay, so make sure to ask for your rights as a consumer. I returned a few minutes later and turned to the worker. She had the card but I was told I was leaving without paying (?!). I paid again (!). It was only when I returned from the Netherlands that I noticed that I had to pay twice for one purchase. More: it's no answer for my letter from Jumbo (!).

Imagine a store that has better and healthier produce and goods than say Whole Wallet, er, sorry, Whole Foods, but has the pricing of Aldi. Stunning, that's what the availability of the food is here. And most of it comes from within the country. The Netherlands is one of the top food producing countries in the world, you read that right. Traveled by their massive greenhouses once on a high speed train and they're as far as you can see for what seemed like an hour. So yes, a LOT of them. This country has their collective shit together. And, you can get all that good produce, sustainably packaged most of the time, right at Albert Heijn. The locals just don't get it, and if you've lived here all your life, why would you? But there's more, the number of great tasting, healthy choices here, reasonably priced to my mind, have few equals in my travels. Food here is simply better tasting, fresher, hasn't traveled as far. What an impressive difference. How sad that I'm returning to the old subsidiary of Kroeger where I live. Ugh.

Its prior name was Prisenmarkt (named after Prinsengracht (Prince canal)). The earliest version of the market sold everything from pottery, textiles, household items, second-hand goods and pigeons. There's a detailed accounting of this market's history on their website. The current iteration of the market consists of 1) a farmer's market with many local and artisanal producers of farm produce, meats and dairy, baked goods, etc. and 2) a "general goods" market which consists of stands selling housewares, art, vintage clothing and accessories, antiques, textiles and household furnishings, and more. The former is held on Saturdays 9-4pm, the latter on Saturdays same time as the farmers market and Mondays 9-2pm. From where I was walking around, it looked like about three dozen vendors with stands of varied sizes gathered here to sell on a Saturday morning. I also arrived around 9:30am, so there were still vendors setting up too. What a bustling atmosphere and certainly lots of locals doing some weekend food shopping--saw plenty of veggies, fruit, bread, placed directly in bicycle crates (on the front or back of this popular transportation method Amsterdam is well-known for) and biked away. So many yummy looking items! It made me wish I had a kitchen there so I could buy and prepare food from this market.
