She didn't feel challenged and was going through the motions academically - uninspired. She is now thriving; surrounded by interesting, funny, and fully engaged kids. Her teachers bring out her best, most confident self. Without the confines of a grading system she is taking more risks and there have been leaps forward across the board - academically and artistically . She has always been a good student but now she is moving beyond the endless jumping of hoops and busy work of her old school. There is greater understanding of how she defines "good work", and as such taking more personal responsibility for getting there. Basically, she is learning how to implement a plan rather than to follow in another's footsteps. With the support of teachers and her friends she is learning how to innovate and cultivate, how to set goals and set limits, inspired by her own vision of what is possible. I have also been very impressed by our head of school, Tim Backland. He is very approachable and always willing to talk and problem solve when questions or concerns have arisen. He is a compassionate man with a talent for leadership. The school is very fortunate to have him. Under his stewardship I know Waring will maintain its excellent academic standards and it's creative and supportive school culture. This year has been a true turning point for my daughter. I feel very confident that she is getting an excellent eduction, but more than that she has become a happy kid.

He has changed from being a not-so-happy-about-school kid to someone who looks forward to his classes and has shed his school anxiety. All with none of the typical middle school drama! Can't recommend them highly enough! Plus, I have to add that their approach to remote learning is beyond a 5-star rating. To say that they have gone above and beyond is an understatement. The staff is talented and committed. There is a parent participation component, as with all cooperative programs. This is something that drew me to the program. I was amazed my first year how varied people's situations are - one or both parents working outside the home part or full time, nanny's, grandparents and family friends helping out at pick-up and drop-off, as well as moms and dads working as stay-at-home parents. I didn't carpool, but some families arranged carpools. I often swapped child-care of my youngest daughter (when my oldest was in school) on parent-help days and then would watch another family's younger child when it was their turn. I've benefited from the sense of community at the school, and the chance to have a few hours every month or so to be with my child at school. The best part though is the positive experience my children have had at the school, developing social skills and learning through play.

It is a cooperative program, so you have to be open to that aspect. I personally loved helping in the classroom and getting to observe my child interacting with his friends. There are some volunteer components -- one work day a year to help maintain the school and grounds and service on one committee -- but they certainly aren't onerous. It's not for everyone, but so far I've found it very manageable as a working parent. The other parents are very supportive and open to switching schedules. I'm new to town, so I've found it a valuable way to meet other people and find a sense of community. The curriculum is play-based, so the focus is more on developing imagination, healthy social interaction, etc. I'm looking forward to seeing how the curriculum develops as my son progresses.

First of all, every faculty and staff member care about the children they are teaching. They want nothing more than to see children succeed and follow their dreams. I was definitely not an easy student to teach, and challenged even the most experienced teachers, but they never once gave up. Secondly, the smaller class sizes allow students to receive the tailored support they may desperately need. Going from a public school system that couldn't slow down even for a moment, to the Montessori method was a lifesaver. I praise Harborlight whenever I can because of the opportunities it afforded me, and the knowledge gained from it. Finally, to combine the first and second points, I went into the school a quiet, guarded, anxious boy and graduated as a social, confident, and matured young man. The faculty shaped me into who I am today. I can never thank the school enough for everything they did for me, but I try my hardest. She was super quick to respond to our emails and questions, very friendly, and very competent. We also liked the majority of teachers that we met who interacted with our child. The only complaint we made during our time there was that during drop-off and pick-up things always seemed a bit more hectic than they needed to be -- it seemed like having another teacher in there during that time would have helped. The other challenge was teacher turnover, though I imagine this is fairly common at any daycare center. Of the 12 or so teachers we met, five moved on in the year that we were there. Luckily they ended up being replaced by other great teachers. Our only reason for leaving is that a 10% discount on two children was still much higher than us just hiring a nanny.

I was pleasantly surprised that the image vocational schools are given is way off the mark Not only was he allowed hands on exploratory work in about 9 fields, he was evaluated according to his interests and learning style. They let the parents know everything that is going on with the student ...if they're late, absent . If your child is out of school, they follow up and expect a reason. The kids are expected to behave, keep their noses clean and respect each other What I like about the school is that they prepare them for real world. They don't baby them My son was OSHA and "WORK READY" certified and will be going on COOP in a job in his field The only down side is the lack of resources for the kids in the form of guidance. I know the guidance counselors are trying but there are no programs in the Freshman year that guide, inspire and assist the students to think of college as a possibility -not on a grand scale anyway I was in constant contact regarding the COOP programs and they seem to be in a rut, relying on a few employers for the jobs instead of trying to get as many employers on board as possible to expose the kids to all kinds of work in their field My son has had to get me involved in order to get something done or nothing gets done at all. The guidance counselors know whose parents are involved and whose aren't. So if a kid has the misfortune of having parents who don't get involved or give a crap, they have little voice If you have your child attend here, you won't be sorry.
