    Guttenberg Motel

    Guttenberg Motel

A well kept secret that should be gotten out there. Guttenberg is a town along the Mississippi…read moreRiver to the north of Dubuque. As such, you have the choice of very expensive B&Bs or this little gem. It is located just as you come into town, on highway 52. It is straight out of the 1940s, with its welcoming patch of petunias, log cabin exterior on the office and chairs outside each room's door, but that is only its exterior and it adds to it charm. The hostess and owner of the hotel, Patty, checks you in with an actual key, not plastic card. My room was a queen bed room that faced the street. I don't know what type of windows she has, but I never heard street noise. The bed is very comfortable with MyPillow pillows, so making them comfortable was a snap. There is a nice sized fridge for yogurt or beer and a clean microwave for warming things. There is also a coffee maker for a morning jolt. The bathroom is small and the location of the a/c unit for the room. The bathroom is completely new and very clean. She provides 4 towels, 3 hand towels and 2 wash cloths as well as shampoo, soap and conditioner. There is a nicely scented air-freshener in there as well. I was happy there was a wall mounted, flat screen TV to relax with as well as a nice table and chair if you wanted to do some writing. The WiFi is strong and reliable. There is not an actual closet, but there is a rod over the fridge where you can hang things. That is also where an extra pillow and blanket can be found. There is a lovely patio/deck at the back of the motel for guest's use. There is a firepit and BBQ grill if you are so inclined or just want to have a glass of wine and relax. The motel is within walking distance of the local Casey's and the Stadium Bar and Grill is right next door. If you are feeling like a good stretch of the legs, the downtown riverwalk is less than half a mile away and the roads are quite safe to walk. I would love to see the colors of the hillside, across the road from it, shows off in the Fall!

The owner, I presume, checked us in and assured us we would be happy with the room. We opened the door and immediately you could smell the "clean". What a nice room! Two nice firm beds, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and more than enough space. Highly recommend if you are in Guttenberg!

The Old Jail and FIrehouse Guest Suite is a a one-room suite complete with kitchen, dining area,…read morequeen bed, day bed/trundle and small fold-out bed. There is a quiet courtyard as well. When we arrived in McGregor, we were immediately greeted by Richard and Charlene who made sure we parked in a safe location. Richard helped with our bags. As we entered the suite, our senses are bombarded with an Americana motif taken to the nth degree. Almost every square inch is decorated by images and pictures of the old jail and firehouse. The Palucci's will fill you in on the history of the jail and some interesting stories. in addition, there are old trickets and toys representing firemen and the jail theme. Charlene's father was a fireman in Chicago and she has a tribute of him displayed in the kitchen area. Just about every square inch of this room is covered with something. Even the ceiling is wallpapered. If you have sensitivity to sensory overload then this is definitely not the place for you. But, if you appreciate the time and care that went into trying to make this one-room reflect the history of the town, then you will really appreciate the decor and ambiance. Although not officially a Bed and Breakfast, the Palucci's have generously stocked the fridge with pastries and cinnamon rolls, milk, juice, jellies, etc. The pantry has coffee, teas, and snacks. Richard and Charlene have gone out of their way to make sure you can make your way through all the switches and amenities that the place has to offer. In fact, they have written directions for EVERYTHING in the room. There are directions for which light switch is for which area of the room, how to turn the key to open the door, how long to keep the A/C running. You'll either find it endearing or eccentric. Another consideration is the location to Main Street. The room itself if just feet from Main Street and the Mississippi River is only about 4 blocks. But, with the big picture window open, all passerby's can see in. Not a big deal since you can close the blinds for privacy (there's even a note on how to do that). Overall, we really enjoyed our visit at the Old Jail and Firehouse Guest Suite. We found it clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the friendliness and care from RIchard and Charlene. We would definitely stay there again!

Google had the hotel listed for $104. Big difference. Lucy refused to honor it and I was told I had to go through a 3rd party to get that price. Which according to Lucy could take minutes to hours to show up on their system. Surprise - it took hours and they refused to give us a key even though they had all of our info and a confirmation number. There's literally 2 cars in the parking lot. It's not like they should be turning down customers. My husband got involved and she was rude to him. If we weren't so exhausted from driving and the trouble and money already invested in the non refundable reservation we would have gone elsewhere. Had we known about the noise and lights we would have. Every room has earplugs for a reason! You can throw a rock and hit a train and a gas station. Train blows its horn at least every half hour right outside the hotel. The only gas station in town is right outside your window. Lovely view of glaring lights through the curtains that don't close properly. Every truck and motorcycle (which is everyone) with no muffler takes off like a bat out of hell with absolutely no regard for any possible people either in the hotel or in any other building. Barney Fife hides up the hill and nabs everyone rolling through the stop sign right outside your window. Two tv remotes and neither controls the obnoxious volume then wouldn't shut the tv off. We just unplugged it. Nothing about this hotel is worth the full price. Nothing is worth any discounted price. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else!
