They were like any other elementary teachers. But I do remember one teacher asked me why I was "so angry at the world" when I was only like 12? the 6th grade camp was hell for me. There was trash everywhere, and one of my friend's had to pick it up. The classes were pretty big, but then again I was shorter. I vividly remember 4 memories. The first is my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Dunagan(I kind of forget how to spell). She was chill, didn't assign homework, yet still tried her best to teach us. The 2nd memory also related to my 5th grade teacher, however, when she was away. The memory is about an awful sub, who I don't even know if she's still alive, but she was rude. She locked my brother outside for talking while doing his work, made us run outside in the grass despite allergies and being severely dehydrated, and otherwise just didn't even try to teach. My friends and I were really into Genshin Impact so we called her the "Crimson Witch of Flames" after one of the bosses, and I still think it's fitting. And, this vivid memory is watching some kid fall into a coma. I don't really remember her name, but she was playing on the monkey bars and accidentally fell, hit her head on something, and next thing I knew an ambulance was out front and they were rolling her away in a wheel chair. Blood was running down her forehead, she was limp and not responding, and needless to say, that changed me as a person. I also never saw her again! I do remember my friend daring me to kick his brother. I was really violent back then so I obliged, and then he fell to the ground crying and sobbing. I almost got the cops called on me, and I wasn't allowed to go and play outside during recess or lunch. It's a reasonable punishment, though not the calling the cops part since I was like 11 or 12. However, what I find unreasonable is that they (they being the workers in the main office) expected me to sit in a corner without getting up, not in sight of the clock, and yet also get up to look at the clock to see when to go back to class since they didn't tell me. And when I did try to do what they expected, they yelled at me to go sit back down. I missed 2 hours worth of class multiple days because of this. Also my brother looked up something on the Chromebook because he saw it in a TV show because he was curious and he got called a predator and almost had the cops called on him. Anyway, I think all elementary schools are dirty and stinky but this one is especially rough. A lot of the punishments were too much, in my opinion. Anyhow, if I had kids, I would try to convince my wife to homeschool them instead of having them go here.

I am a public school educator…read more Many of the teachers here previously taught in the public school system, such as one who taught for 20 years in LAUSD. The rigor is there. The staff emails all the time and answers emails quickly without needing to set up appointments--that's a HUGE difference than public school. What GCS does better than public schools is give grace--late work is accepted, retesting is often offered, and more. The funny thing is, this is an equity issue that many public districts are just now doing--LBUSD and LAUSD both offer these now. GCS has been doing this for YEARS because it's part of the praxis of Christianity--if you can have a second chance, they'll give it to you. So thankful to be part of the GCS community. I never thought we'd be private school people, but Covid changed that. Now I see the huge difference between public and private education--and I teach in a public school.

I remember many instances of abusive language and outright racism towards me (one of the only Asian students in a primarily white classroom.) I remember an extremely problematic comparison of Asians to Jews when explaining why "people didn't like Jews." I remember her calling me the dumbest smart person she had ever met and treating me like my successes mattered less than the ones of my white classmates. I remember her yelling in class, and I remember her making me cry many times. I am a teacher myself now and am horrified that this was ever allowed. I am horrified that she still works there. People like this should not be allowed to be around children. I hope she finds a different line of work.

Most schools -- Hopkinson, Rossmoor, Lee -- truly live up to that reputation. But parents need to know: Weaver Elementary, under Principal Dr. Schmidt and teacher Colette Sullivan, is not safe for children. Here's what happened to our kindergartener. For three weeks straight, he was removed from Ms. Sullivan's class and left alone in the principal's office for hours every day -- without our knowledge. He was not disruptive. His only "offense" was not finishing assignments. Instead of being supported, he was dropped in a chair with no desk, no guidance, and no instruction, while his classmates learned. We only discovered this because our child became so fearful that he broke down and begged us not to take him to school. The secretary confirmed the routine, and Dr. Schmidt himself admitted it happened multiple times and defended it as acceptable. The school kept no records and never notified us. Think about that: a six-year-old child, abandoned daily, completely unsupervised. Imagine the damage to his trust in school, his sense of safety, his joy of learning. For weeks he sat silently, terrified, while we thought he was in class. When the district was alerted, the superintendent investigated and disciplined both Dr. Schmidt and Ms. Sullivan. That discipline alone proves how unacceptable their conduct was. Yet, shockingly, both remain employed at Weaver, still responsible for children. This was not discipline. This was not education. This was neglect. And it happened under the direct leadership of Dr. Schmidt and Ms. Sullivan. After transferring to Hopkinson Elementary, our son's experience was completely different. Principal Garcia and his new teacher welcomed him, supported him, and restored his love of learning. He is thriving again -- proof that Los Al schools can be extraordinary. But Weaver is not. The leadership failed. The teacher failed. But I'm glad the superintendent's discipline did bring accountability but it won't bring back the damage that it did to our child. Parents deserve to know the truth: Weaver Elementary, under Dr. Schmidt and Ms. Sullivan, is not a school you should ever risk sending your child to. Until there is a complete change in leadership, avoid this school at all costs. Do not make the mistake we did. Do not send your child to Weaver Elementary.

BTW, Grace is not used to dealing with substantive questions from parents, as the only other parent questions were: 1. Who are you? 2. Will my special ed kid get to socialize with the 'normal' kids?
