We are spoilt for choice in Bridge Road for high quality speciality shops. Lancelots easily fits into this category. Open since 2003, Lancelots is the go-to boutique for wine lovers who want to pick up their favourite choice, or browse for new discoveries. When this place opened, I didn't know that much about wine - but I decided that the owners were going to become my tutors (lucky them!) I quickly learnt the intricacies of a fine wine - and that a good wine does not necessarily equal an expensive one. When I go round to friends houses for dinner, they tell me what they are cooking, and I go into Lancelots always with a budget of under £10 and get them to help me pair a wine with say, coq au vin (Chianti or Multipulchano) fettuccine with mushrooms (Californian Chardonnay) or a Thai curry (French Sauvignon Blanc).
Always one for free alcohol, I love that they have monthly wine tastings. Usually these are on the last Saturday of every month. I'm even happier when they occasionally merge these with cheese tastings. These evenings are always fun and informative. I once found a sparkling rose which was made with freshly crushed strawberries. Trust me, it was the nectar of the Gods!
This is also a good place to order in wine, however obscure the label. Case in point; after experiencing the best meal, and wine of my life in a little town called Cortona in Tuscany, I wrote down the label of the wine that I had drunk, turns out it was a locally produced syrah. I took the description to Lancelots and a few weeks later, I came back in and picked up a case of the same wine which they had kindly tracked down for me. Lucky us for having this place read more
