Spokane River Midwives - Prenatal Room

Spokane River Midwives

I could not say anything better about these midwives. My wife's first birth was at a midwife…read morecenter in Boise and it was horrible. Spokane river midwives was a COMPLETELY different experience. They were extremely respectful of our decisions and gave us all the info we needed to make the right decisions. Our first baby ended up being a C-section, mostly we believe because of the midwife's mistakes. Our second baby, at Spokane River Midwives, was not an easy birth. There were other midwives who came into the center, who weren't even supposed to be working that day who ended up staying with us the whole day. My wife needed all the support she could get and they were the perfect people for it. Our main midwife Brianna stayed with us the whole 24 hours; and Kayla, who wasn't even supposed to be working, came in and stayed with us the last 12 hours. Midwives all sounds great when you meet with them, but it's when you get into a difficult labor that you find out what they're really made of. We desperately did not want to end up at the hospital getting a c-section again. Hours before the delivery I felt like there was no hope. And our previous midwife in Boise would have given up on us before that even. These women stuck it out, with unbelievable patience and stayed positive and helped my wife through the whole thing. I feel like we 100% owe the fact that we had a successful natural v-back delivery because of these women.

Sarah Dunn actually takes the time to communicate with you through every single appointment. Which…read moreis amazing compared to the 15 minutes you get when you go through the hospital midwives. She makes me feel empowered, loved, cared about & she is so great at her job! She is like a therapist through our sessions, I always come out of the appt feeling way better than when I went in. We focus a lot on my diet and supplements to make sure baby is getting everything he needs. I wish I could give her 10/5 stars because she is fantastic!! I recommend her to everyone of my pregnant friends. I am so excited to give birth at her birthing center!

We didn't have a great experience with Sarah. Unfortunately she has removed her google reviews and…read moremy review with it. Things were going good to begin with but she soon started to dismiss some concerns I had. When I felt uncomfortable to proceed any further with her we transferred to another Ob and thats when the problems really started. She had 0 medical records for me and to this day we have still never seen any medical records. She lost payments that I needed to provide records of myself and thankfully we were able to recoup some of our money but it took months. She consistently didn't respond to email or phone calls and had an excuses each time as to why she couldn't get back to us. She also failed to provide a supper receipt for us to bill insurance and I tried for over a year to get that. Unfortunately it was never provided so we were never able to submit to insurance or recoup that back. I think things would have been ok if I had developed medical conditions but unfortunately it did and we discovered the unprofessional side of the business. Just something to consider when looking into midwifery care.

Quilted Health - Our team with a tapestry commemorating our 2024 births

Quilted Health

In our experience quilted health would be an excellent choice if this is not your first time giving…read morebirth, you are open to an epidural and want to give birth at Sacred Heart. The positives of our experience with quilted were that over 60+ hours of labor we were given choices and mostly treated with respect. The staff at Sacred Heart was wonderful with the exception of one nurse who we were able to request not to have again. Even though it ended in C section, Hannah, one of the excellent midwives came in the OR with us and was incredibly kind and helpful. The OB Hospitalist, Dr Tyler was such a great communicator and we felt very safe and at ease with him and his fellow Dr Laubauch. The MA's and office staff at quilted were all great and we liked being able to have appointments in the cute brick house instead of having to go to Sacred Heart. The negatives were that 3 of the 8 midwives could be quite condescending and we were lectured during the birth by one of them and after the birth by another. The 3rd made a scary experience during the pregnancy even scarier by not accurately communicating with us about why she needed to do a pelvic exam and not explaining why she thought I was wrong about what I felt happen- other than she "had never seen it in 29 years of experience". 2 of these midwives also were not fully up to date on hospital policy and 1 of them got very defensive when we asked that she tell those whose water has broken that if they go to the OB ED they will be pressured to stay and be admitted. Even though Dr Tyler was amazing, if you do end up getting a C-section, you will now have to use the hospitalist OB staff if you need any surgical follow up care. They are emergency based so you cannot schedule an appointment or OR time with them. There was excessive bleeding later on and we spent over 8 hours in the OB ED with our newborn. Dr Zwiesler was great as well and thankfully ordered the test which caught the problem but there were very limited options to deal with it there. Since nothing could be scheduled, I was told to come back the next day, not to eat or drink for 8 hours before and wait in triage again to get a DNC. Also when you use Quilted they send you to the MFM clinic for ultrasounds. You can read the reviews of them and decide but if we had to do it over again we definitely would have asked to be sent to inland imaging. Our negative experience at the MFM clinic was brushed off and Dr Barber was described as a "great provider", that was certainly not our experience. A bit of luck of the draw with this experience, in the end we were certainly glad we were in a hospital and not at home, we also had great midwifery care from Hannah, Haleigh, Charlie and Jane - but there were enough negatives with this experience that if we had to do it over again we would have chosen differently.
