To get there by roads, you must pass through Asharoken, a locals-only kinda town, known for its radar detectors and speed trap-police force. I'll just say it makes for a nice bike ride. To see the lighthouse over the Sound, look just west of the four LILCO towers (It has a fixed Fresnel lens that doesn't blink or rotate). There is also an active Coast Guard station on-site here which, though closed to the public, can be arranged for groups and private tours. I have only bought duck food here but I would definitely love to come back and check it out more so I can learn more about the area that I have grown up in. Not only is it cheap but it is healthy for the ducks and geese. This place also provides tours on weekends. It is a functional mill and a great historical landmark. I often see swan in the area and they would often make nests in the lower basin outside. Overall this is a really cute place to stop by and please get the bird seed as bread and other human food are bad for the birds.

It features old-timey sights of South Ocean Avenue (see pics): 1. A dedication for the Incorporated Village Centennial. 2. Imagery of the (now bygone) Suffolk Traction Company. 3. The old Academy Street School (which is also gone). 4. An early Twentieth Century depiction of the Southeast buildings of the Four Corners. 5. Yes, this is very close to where the accident happened 2 miles. This is the closest land area to the plane crash and the actual site where a lot of the wreckage washed ashore so that review makes no sense. Also, keep in mind they need to have a spot for a memorial. A LOT OF investigative work was done very close by. ???? Would that person expect the memorial to be in the middle of the air or ocean? Smdh. A little confused on the other reviews parking comments. It was free to park when I went. I did go with a resident though.

They had most of the vendors inside the barn or whatever it was and it was pretty cramped. We had to squeeze past people a few times. We browsed around and walked outside. It is situated on lots of land. Walk down the path and you'll see a still in use come the Spring, an old time baseball field. Keep walking and there's a farm. The kids enjoyed seeing and petting the horse, and sheep. There were chickens too. I would like to return when we can learn more about the property and the various houses on it. When you're standing on the one path, you're set back away from Main Street and it feels like you're transported back in time. The 3 star review was based on the holiday event we went to after thanksgiving.

We visited the Huntington Lighthouse for a guided tour on August 4, 2013 and we thoroughly enjoyed…read moreour trip. The Lighthouse is 101 years old and looks like a castle out at sea. After purchasing our tickets at a dockside tent, where various souvenirs were also being sold by the volunteers, we boarded a small boat for a 10-minute ride to the Lighthouse. The boat ride through Huntington Harbor was absolutely lovely - weather was warm, sunny, and clear, the water was smooth, and the views were fantastic. Arriving at the Lighthouse, we got off the boat on a floating dock and, after a brief introduction, began the guided tour with two tour guides. The first tour guide took us to the second floor of the lighthouse, out onto the landing, and up into the very top of the lighthouse where the light itself it, and was very thorough in his explanations and seemed enthusiastic about his tour. He was very knowledgable. The second tour guide told us about the living quarters of the Lighthouse and was also informative. All of the volunteers were very friendly and were clearly very interested in their work and very knowledgeable about the Lighthouse. After the tour, we returned to the boat and headed back to shore. All in all, the entire experience took exactly one hour, from initially boarding the boat to returning to shore. The suggested donation for the tour is $15 for each adult, but they accepted $20, and we bought a magnet for $3. The tent in which to purchase tickets and souvenirs is located at the end of the parking lot of Gold Star Beach in Huntington, just by the dock. There were signs indicating that a parking permit was required and that Huntington residents could purchase a seasonal or daily pass and that non-residents must pay a daily fee and display a tag; however, there was no one at the gate when we pulled in, and though we waited for someone to come, no one ever appeared, so we parked. We saw someone at the gate as we boarded the boat. We didn't have any problem with our parking, perhaps we just lucked out. The Lighthouse was beautiful and is nicely maintained. We really had a fantastic time. Our only complaint is that on the way back from the Lighthouse, the boat seemed much too crowded, to the point where we were really seated directly up against each other. However, I think the same number of people were on the boat when it headed to the Lighthouse, so I think the issue was more that no one was telling people to sit on both front and back of the boat or asking people to move around - because as we disembarked, I noticed that there were 12 people at the front and only 2, who were sitting with plenty of room, at the back.

A few platforms to stop and catch your breath. The view at the top is unbeatable. Take the extra few steps up and you can see the light turning at the top!

If you haven't been to Fire Island's landmark lighthouse, have you REALLY been to Long Island??…read more Well, I grew up on LI and truthfully never made it over here til I started having out of town visitors. Lately though, as a semi-landlocked refugee from Ohioooooooooo, I make it a point (ha!) to get over (and up!) here every chance I get!! The beach is beautiful, (any/every season) the boardwalk hike (from Parking Lot 5) is VERY easy and scenic (look for deer!!) and the view from the top of this historic lighthouse is priceless!! There's a lighthouse museum next door to the lighthouse itself, which is worth a visit (very friendly/informative info/volunteers) but if you're in a rush (esp. toward the end of the day/sunset) head right over the lighthouse itself and get tickets for that climb/money shot!! If I'm able to do the climb with only minimal huffing and puffing (!!) you should be able to as well, and the AMAZING 365 degree view you'll find will be more than worth the "struggle!!" DO IT, L.I.!!!
