I have no idea why I'm reviewing an iron (or whatever) bull; then again, this isn't just a bull, it's an oasis. Statue The Smithtown Bull- everyone knows this landmark, conveniently located across from the worst strip club around; but I digress... This bull represents the bull that Captain John Smith rode in the Kentucky derby only to lose to Sea Biscuit, because Pocahontas was too heavy... Or, alternatively, this represents the bull that Richard Smith rode as far as he could in one day in order to gain as much land as he could from the chief of the Wyandanch Indians, in said ride. I like the 2nd version personally but no matter how much you suck at American History, you can rest assured that if you use this magnificent beast as a landmark, everyone will find their way to your house. The Smithtown Bull Monument , Just great! love to LOOK at it as I drive by difficult to get to however as crossing the highway risks certain harm . as The Story Goes..A Ride on the Bull determined property lines 4 Smithtown SMTH stopped for lunch had bread and cheese on Bread and cheese Hollow Road. I really enjoy this bull. On a road where it's strip mall after strip mall, it's nice to see something different. When your stopped at a light within viewing distance tell me you don't stare at this thing the whole time. LI should def step it up in the statue department. Would I go out of my way to 'see the bull'? Nope. If you find yourself driving from the town of Smithtown west on Jericho Turnpike, you may see a ridiculously large, anatomically correct statue of a bull on the right hand side of the road - this is the Smithtown Bull. A local landmark, the bull is a tribute to the town's namesake, Richard Smith, and has a rather colorful legend behind it. The story goes that way back in the 1600's Smith struck a deal with the local Indians that he would be given all the land he could travel around on his bull in one day. Smith supposedly picked the longest day of the year and set out on a course that now defines the boundaries of the township of Smithtown. While the story isn't exactly true, the bull has become a famous part of Smithtown's folklore. In fact, I've heard that Bread and Cheese Hollow Rd is named for the spot where he took a little break for lunch on his legendary journey (I'd always wondered how that name came about!) The bull, whose name was Whisper, incidentally, is frequently a source of complaint by the more Puritanical residents because it is anatomically correct. Whether it is lore, or it is based on truth, the story has long been told that the Indians gave John Smith the amount of land he could travel on the back of a bull, in one day. This township is now known as Smithtown. The bull was constructed to commemorate the beginnings of this town and is situated on the crossroads of Route 25A and Jericho Turnpike, at the base of the town, itself, beneath the railroad track. The anatomy of this bull has been the topic of many of conversation, both in the town as well as on Yelp. Youngsters have long gotten a kick out of spray painting his genitalia. A bull is a male and has a penis. Wow, can you get over it? Whether the story of Mr. Smith is truth or fiction, the bull represents the humble beginnings of Smithtown. It is a beautiful statue, perched upon a high cement platform. I can't imagine anyone painting, climbing on or riding it, it would be just as disgraceful as defacing or hanging from Lady Liberty's arm. In all the years I have lived in the area, I have never gone up to the statue to read what is written, however I don't think walking up to it was the intention, based on it's location. This is a very busy intersection, but it is thought provoking and humbling to drive past it. This is a gorgeous piece of art, that deserves respect for what it symbolizes. read more

As far as huge bull statues go, this one is alright in my book. It kind of sneaks up on you as you're driving too. Store, store, giant bull, store. That's how it goes. Jennifer F. explained the reason for this statue pretty well, so I'm not going to repeat it. She also accurately states that this bull has a big one...if you know what I mean. You definitely know it's not a cow. Anyway, stop by the bull statue and take a look. Okay- how long have the other yelpers been in Smithtown. I was visiting my daughter recently and decided to go to the island. I saw the Bull. I didn't recognize it. Apparently, I am the only one who knows of the old pond located behind the bull. That is where I learned how to skate. Its not there anymore? I remember the days of the old Nissaquogue River and the Bunches Long Island duck farm located down the street, to the right of the bull- like right there in back of the Bull. My mom spent part of her childhood in Smithtown, and my grandparents moved there after they retired in the 1970s. That's how I learned about the bull and the Richard Smith story though I grew up in New Jersey. I remember one story in particular: A new Dairy Barn drive-through store opened up in town, and a life-sized cow statue was placed in front for the grand opening. However, one morning the store manager arrived to find the cow was missing. Where did it go? Had it been stolen and trashed? The police were called and no doubt a missing cow report was filed. Not sure why anyone would give this anymore than 2 stars. It's a bull that I wouldn't recommend anyone go see. It's really used to give directions. (Make a right or left at the bull). And it's a dangerous street to cross. So I wouldn't recommend kids or elderly do that. Just see it in the car as you drive by. read more

It's a statute of a bull. I like statues. Bulls are okay. But it loses 2 stars because you have to have a death wish to cross the major intersection it's on in order to go take a look at it. The funny part about this review is that I've worked 2 mins down the road from the infamous Bull for almost 10 years and never appreciated it's beauty until now.
