The facade is impressively modern, with black shiny cladding, awhooshy, Star Trek stylee automatic doors, and moody modern lighting. Plus points: - clean and tidy - friendly and efficient staff - a pretty serviceable menu in the Bar and Grill Foodwise, the dinner menu is pretty good, with an emphasis on meaty dishes; they advertise that all their beef is from Derbyshire, aged, etc., and I've heard no complaints. The kitchen also does a good line in starters, high points including calamari ( so simple, so easy to screw up), and a very nice game terrine. If I was to sum it up, it's an uncomplicated, and perhaps slightly old fashioned menu, but probably well suited to the clientele and with a serviceable wine list. The rooms seem to be large, reasonably comfortble, and boasting the mod cons one would expect lots of exposed brick and is-it-a-wardrobe shiny wood. On the downside:- my room had a monsoon shower, but no bath- the shower produced a stale-smelling trickle of water, not the gushy tropical downpour one would hope for - the sink appeared to be able to produce hot water, but not cold . Not great for shaving or brushing your teeth - breakfast, some mornings, appear to be not-quite-ready after the restaurant has opened; quite inconvenient if you're looking for an early start - the room service menu is rather staid and changes irregularly; incidentally the menus in the room have only a vague resemblance to what is actually available - the bar is fairly pricey £9.50 for a double G & T seems a bit steep, even to a Londoner. I could also whine about the room being over heated, the sheets over-starched, or noise in the morning, but in my experience these are true of most bigger hotels anywhere in the world, so it would be somewhat unfair.

Bar staff didn't have a clue, and even less when it came to serving breakfast. The waitress, who brought me the wrong breakfast order, asked me if I was sure I ordered what I ordered from her... I mean, seriously?? At the bar she really had no idea of any of the spirits or how to pour a drink - the lime slices were brown and manky around the edges and had clearly been cut days earlier. And the music in the bar was so loud we had to ask for it to be turned down, we couldn't hear across the table. The breakfast for 14 pounds was a laugh - the 'buffet table' was a joke. Coffee - o dear, stick to the tea. The rooms are actually quite nicely appointed, if small, but no wardrobe, just a nook, and no fridge, iron or ironing board. I got an ironing board sent up with an iron which promptly ruined the shirt I put it on as the plate was covered in some burnt substance I could not get off my shirt. I know you are thinking I should have checked, but I did puff the steam and wipe it on the board before use, however it seems the cotton was especially good at attracting the debris. [sigh] And then 5 pounds an hour for wifi - really?? And lastly the pillows are truly diabolical - it they cost more than 50p each I would be amazed, they were a shocker. When we went to get a coffee in the reception area we were informed we had checked out and had to pay cash (we hadn't) and I was not offered an itemised bill to check before they took my payment. All in all, you could do worse - but give it a hard think.

This property also has a golf course, so you'll see lots of foot traffic around the back side, where there's a restaurant and golf shop. We stayed at the property for a couple of nights and our room was great. It faced the interior, so we could see a beautiful flower garden and more of a wooded area. Our room was a bit dated but well maintained. One thing I did not realize until we arrived is that our room, at least (and maybe all rooms), did not have air conditioning. Luckily for us, the (summer) temperature was comfortable, but this could be an issue if you visit during a hot spell. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant both mornings and it was delightful. A traditional English spread (buffet) with self seating. Overall, staff was great. The only thing I'd caution against is the amount of stairs you'll have to go up and down trying to get from one place to the other just within the hotel since the topography has rooms and hallways at all levels. Pack lightly or ask for your bags to be delivered to your room at arrival.

I was at a conference here this weekend and I had a really good stay. In reference to the earlier…read morereviews- YES, it's in a business park, YES- it's 5 miles out of Nottingham. If you're looking to be in the city centre- this isn't the place. It's about a 15 minute drive from central town. Besides these points- the service here was wonderful (especially the lovely ladies at the front desk who were polite, helpful and had a good sense of humour). The hotel has a really lovely spa (with pool, steam, sauna and jacuzzi) which all guests can use (and it stays late/opens early). It also has quite a decent bar (as hotel bars go!) I had room service and the food was good- tasty and it arrived hot. I was also upgraded to a really lovely suite! Can't ask for more than that. It was a very reasonable cost to stay here, and although I was travelling for work, I really enjoyed my stay at the Belfry.

From this cocktail menu, how many can you make?" "Well I've only ever made 3 cocktails in my life before. Let me take a look at the ingredients." After much ado, we ended up with two vodka and grapefruits or something equally disgusting. "Oh, and two slices of pecan pie please!" "Well it's just gone 11pm and we can't serve food." "Maybe if we asked nicely?" "Oh no, the chef's gone home." "We've been trying to get a drink for the last 8 minutes..." It went on like this until we gave in. In plenty of time for the chef leaving deadline stated on the room service menu. 20 minutes later, they called back and told us the chef had gone home. No pecan pie. Do not pass go. We checked in and made our way up to deluxe room (a £10 extra charge). First of all the room came with a view that was beautiful. It really showed all of Nottingham and the floor to ceiling window enhanced this luxury to the maximum. The bed was comfortable and the shower powerful. However the room was slightly on the small side and the décor was a little dated for my personal taste. Now, considering we booked the room at half the price due to it being last minute it was perfectly adequate, but I would have been disappointed if I'd have paid full price. The staff were just as friendly/ professional as in the restaurant and I'd like to make a special mention to the bar man that we had the pleasure of servicing us. He was a master of the cocktails and even accommodated two fussy drinkers who asked for espresso martini's sweeter, and more bitter than the usual. Breakfast on offer was good, but again I personally don't think worth the hefty price tag of £10. My advice would be don't book a room at full price, certainly drink in the bar, and definitely eat in the restaurant.

Roast potatoes, the roasted vegetables , some peas pods and an over cooked Yorkshire pudding. Food was warm and not hot. The gravy was bland the whole meal was bland, with little flavor or seasoning. The bar area was a bit noisy with crashing bottles into the recycle bin, and the usual meaningless background music. Service was ok, but no acknowledgement when I was leaving. This meal gave no reason to return.

Swarkestone is a small village south of Derby, in a lovely setting next to the River Trent…read more It's one of those places that has rather too much of historical interest for its size: the bridge and causeway over the Trent, originally built in the 13th century, together form the longest stone bridge in the UK. Its seventeen arches stretch over three-quarters of a mile (1 km). The present handsome spans over the river date from the mid 1700s. The Cavaliers and Roundheads clashed here in 1643 during the English Civil War, and it's where Bonnie Prince Charlie's army stopped and turned back in 1745, ensuring the collapse of the Jacobite rebellion. There has been a pub on the site of the Crewe and Harpur Arms for over 800 years, but the present coaching inn has 'only' been there for about 200. This handsome red brick building is spacious inside, with a central bar, and serves a selection of real ales and typical pub grub. The decor has had a modern makeover, a bit bland for my taste: but the real attraction is, in any case, outside: it has a lovely, large beer garden which runs down to the River Trent, alongside the famous bridge. Although it's close to the road, noise doesn't seem to intrude. It's a lovely spot on a summer's day. Swarkestone is on a lovely circular walk, taking in the River Trent and the nearby Trent and Mersey Canal. It takes about three hours and would make a perfect evening stroll - ending back at the pub, of course...

There is now a pub/family restaurant built next door so you don't need to travel too far for food. It's a little outside of the city centre but it only takes 5/10 mins by bus/taxi to get there.
