I was happy to snag a reservation for the Tasting Room at Waltz today as I planned a leisurely…read moreafternoon. I placed a reservation request in the morning, and they called me in the early afternoon to let me know there was availability, which was great. I appreciated the variety of 15 wines from which you could sample to create your tasting. My picks consisted of: -2020 Sauvignon Blanc -2020 Fusion (white) -2020 Cellar 1599 Riesling: Cellar 1599 is a Waltz label, for reference. -2018 Cellar 1599 Red Blend -2017 Baron Red I won't go into detail on my experiences with each wine, but I did have a glass (and then buy a bottle) of the Riesling. The tastings come in little tasting tubes that are basically test tubes. While some might find that unusual, I'm a science person, so I liked it! They also have a cheese board (choose one of four cheeses) with chocolate and crackers, which I added. The tasting room staff were friendly and accessible. It was a beautiful day and lots of families were out on the large lawn. Too bad there isn't a restaurant here, or it would be even more of a win. In any case, Waltz is a winner!

Easily one of my favorite PA wineries, and my preferred destination while in Lancaster County. To…read moreme, the wine here has more of a California feel to it - the reds are more dry, a bit more robust and rustic. The whites tend to be crisper, feature minerals and ease into the finish. You'll pay a little more than nearby wineries, but the difference in quality is immediately apparent. The estate tasting room itself is somewhat unassuming - nice, Tuscan-inspired, but understated. The room is smaller, with some spacing available near the barrels, but this isn't a "big tent" kind of place. If you'd like a seat inside, you may have to come off-peak or be patient. Guests tend to linger here, and it's often because of the at atmosphere. If not, the surrounding property is a nice place to enjoy your wines. There are chocolates, cheeses, crackers and very light, local creations available. I'd love for there to be even more food choices - these wines are designed to accompany a good meal. If you're okay going slightly off the beaten path, and paying just a little more for quality wines, this is the place to visit in Lanco.

What a surprise when we parked the car. The setting is all around delightful. The stilted…read morearchitecture is current and elegant, surrounded by vast green lawn that faces the Susquehanna River.  It is also a perfect vantage point for viewing the Veterans Memorial Bridge.  The center provides an excellent source of information for accesses to the river as well as bike trails in Lancaster County.  It also offers facilities for events such as exhibitions and weddings.  The parking lot, though a substantial size, could be overrun especially in the summer during popular boating and biking season. There is one boat launcher and 2 docked paddle boat access points, including one which is wheelchair accessible.  And I should count also the one undocked access point right under the bridge. The center marks the southern end of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, currently my favorite trail.  The one negative I should point out is that it can be confusing to get to the trailhead.  There is an overflow parking area and restricted access road that can potentially mislead. The key is to go across the traffic light to where the murals are and head left until the Y intersection where you'd have to cross twice in order to get to the trail.  Aside from that, this place is perfectly situated and planned out.

Is it the nicest river park in the world?…read more Of course not. But it's there. And it's near Lancaster. And it looks like an excellent place for tubing and kayaking. I'd love to go back and take in the visitor center.

I've done this trip many…read moretimes and stayed at a variety of hotels and AirBnbs, and to my surprise, this Holiday Inn Express is my favorite. Check in was a breeze, and the hotel receptionist was very friendly, which I appreciated after a long day of travel. The rooms are modern, clean, and comfortable. They come with a mini-fridge, plenty of drawer and closet space, outlets by the bed to charge your phone, and chromecast on the television, which makes streaming a breeze. These are all major pluses for me for such a long trip. I also found the bed to be quite comfortable. This hotel also has a gym and an indoor pool. I didn't end up using these during my stay, but I may try take advantage of them when I return. The stay also includes a hot breakfast, which was great. Every morning there was some variety of egg, breakfast meat (sausage or bacon), and potato (or biscuits) available. A heat lamp keeps the cinnamon rolls on offer warm and gooey. An automatic pancake machine serves mini pancakes cooked by the press of a button. But the machine jams a lot and the pancakes are tiny. One of the breakfast attendants had to show us the trick to make it work. There were also a variety of other pastries, yogurts, and cereals. In addition to a juice machine, there are carafes with regular coffee, decaf, and hot water available in the lobby 24-7, though they are refreshed less frequently as the day progresses. I had some lukewarm decaf a few times later in the day. One little hiccup during my stay was that there was a power outage. The power went on and off a few times and the elevator couldn't be used for some period of time. This occurred when a lot of folks were on their way to or having breakfast, so the timing was not great. I ended up having to make a few trips up and down the stairs, but it wasn't a big deal, and I felt lucky not to have gotten stuck in the elevator. But there wasn't any real communication about it, and we never did learn the cause. One thing I did note is that when you enter the hotel, there is a sign on the door that makes it clear that local residents are not welcome to stay, only tourists. I haven't been a resident for two decades, but I grew up in this area, and the constant reminder that locals are not welcome was off-putting. I have to wonder if there is a more tactful way for the hotel to handle this issue. Another thing to know is that a lot of folks who stay here are headed to the Soooky Nook sports complex nearby, so there are often large groups in the lobby and large vehicles in the parking lot. All of that being said, I enjoyed my stay here and would absolutely stay here again when visiting this area.
