Color me unimpressed…read more First, the area is run down. OLD equipment, overgrown areas, rusted metals, etc. The basketball hoops are disintegrating, the grills are all pitted and gross. The lake itself LOOKS like toxic sludge; like the color of a backed up toilet. (I'm sure it's fine, but it LOOKS like something you wouldn't even want to dip your toe in.) There is a trail for walking, which allows dogs, so that's cool, but it is POORLY signed, and at multiple spots, requires that you walk across a downed tree over a gulch, jump an expanse, or wade through insanely muddy terrain. I've driven past and seen kids jumping off the floating dock, or swimming in the "lake," but I'll skip that experience every single time. The second star is for effort, as it's cool that the township even has an area like this for the residents to use. But....it's a no from me.

They have day passes, which most area pools and lakes do not. Day passes are only $10. Once inside you can sit on the grass or on the small sandy beach. The grass area has several shady spots, and there are plenty of seats if you don't have your own. The lake is clean, refreshing, and safe for parents with small kids (the child/shallow area is roped off). More adventurous swimmers can swim out to two floating docks, one with a diving board. Having run along the river thousands of times, the chance to see the city and the Schuylkill Banks from the actual river was really great. Jason led our tour- which departed from Walnut Street along the Schuylkill Banks and took us up to the Fairmount Waterworks (and back). We were provided with really nice kayaks, life vests and fascinating tidbits from Jason as he pointed out various points of interest along the way. Jason was really professional and provided a very helpful overview of kayaking to our group (which was comprised of first time AND experienced kayakers). Whether you're a visitor or a local who has seen the river a million times, I definitely recommend experiencing a kayak tour of the Hidden River!

My lady friend and I walked around and through the park in a leisurely fashion. The bright sun reflected off the lake in blinding but welcoming fashion. It was also a recreation center at one point, closing down possibly in the seventies. As teens, we believed an urban myth that the Philly rock station WMMR sponsored a concert here, and the attendees went crazy, trashing Olympia in the process. What really happened is that WYSP, a different rock station, held a "Ramblin' Raft Race Riot" in the early eighties. (You can see how the word "riot" incites some people.) Anyway, it ended up being privately owned, but that did not faze us from entering its abandoned grounds. So, now Burlington County owns this park. I am glad it has been protected from possible condos, but I am not so sure if the county is going to improve this park like they have promised. All I can say is that when this park went public, it lost some of its spirit due to cars on walking paths and humans that think that nature embraces empty forties. Parking is just off of 130. You can walk, fish, swim, boat, and birdwatch here. There are two lakes- one huge one, and a smaller, longish one with mini islands here and there. This smaller lake is bound by Route 130 on one side, but you get used to it. There are paths going around the lakes in a general fashion. In the late eighties the people who lived on the residential road bordering the south end of the lakes used to claim that their street was "private". Feel free to boogie down this street. I don't take kindly to liars who come out in hastily put on robes, ex-cop or not. Paths also go to areas in general woods, and open areas. The rest of the park is bordered by Beverly Rancocas Road, and an industrial park. Go past the industrial park to get to Crystal Lake. Somehow, neither of these manmade entities ruin the atmosphere. Docks could be here and there, depending on their state. Getting down to the water is easy, anyway. You might see remnants of the rec club's past glory. Friends of ours once built a sweat lodge near a set of cement stairs. I used to sit on these stairs and read for hours. This is also where my dog, Daisy, flushed out a rabbit which a barn owl swiftly scooped up. I enjoyed seeing the blue flags coming up every year and eating persimmons right off the tree. Blackberries are biannual and delicious. There should be a giant, cement "compass" still there, serving as a weed garden. You may also see: snakes, turtles, baby turtles, turtle eggs, turtles laying eggs (no crap), snapper shells that you hide until someone else finds it, stuck woodchucks in abandoned wells (no crap- we saved it), egrets, herons, swans, owls, turkeys, an albino goose, weird rocks that seem melted in the orangeish sand area, and many varieties of mushrooms. I never saw the eagles. Watch out for the aforementioned well. It is not deep and it is covered with nature, but someone can still get hurt. And dead animals. I once found two deceased German shepards- together- sometime in the early 2000's. It's a haunting image. It is funny that the police dog training building is right down the street from that depressing scene. You can hit the Rancocas, at the way back, heading south. You will see old, cement structures that once supported creek industry. Daisy almost floated away on a mini iceberg here. I also pet a rabid bat back there. And just watched the creek there, reflecting on life as the sun reflected on the creek. My special haunt is a secret no longer. Glad that some people will come to love it, too.

Now granted, for the past 16 years, I had called Lake Tahoe my backyard so back to Cooper River was a bit of a .... come down. Still, I've come to enjoy certain parts of it. The county park has some great summer events, and if you are in the mood to go for a bike ride or walk around the lake, it's fine. There is lots of parking available. Just be careful if there are big special events when parking is a bit trickier.

Though we were nervous at first about there being one exclusive caterer and an assigned day-of coordinator, everything turned out wonderfully. The Space: The Willows is simply a gorgeous setting at every turn - each room, the landscaping, the grounds. Thankfully we were able to pull off Plan A, getting married in the courtyard, but it was extremely important to us that the backup plan be just as beautiful, and it is! Though we're grateful we didn't have to use it for the ceremony, the Solarium being empty meant we were able to get ready there with tons of natural light and beautiful tile. I loved the variety of spaces we were able to use for portraits and family photos. The views, and the drive in, really set the tone. The Food: Food was my wife's number one most important line item when it came to our wedding, especially having been served less than ideal meals as vendors and seeing the same things over and over. Multiple reviews of Peachtree told us what we needed to know, and we were confident about the menu options. During the tasting, we were a little thrown off because there weren't many items that we loved, but our coordinator reminded us that they're choosing things to present that you wouldn't have necessarily chosen on your own. Our wedding day food was truly unreal, hands down the best wedding food I've had. All our guests were RAVING about it, too. The Staff: We can't say enough good things about the staff at Peachtree/the Willows. We got so lucky to have the team we did, who told us repeatedly that we had amazing guests and the vibes were high. Namely, George, Karen, and Steph made our big day possible. At the end of the night, our hotel shuttle forgot about us, so my wife and I also were able to chat more with the staff, and they genuinely all seemed so happy to be with us. This was absolutely a highlight of our day. We couldn't be more grateful to have found the Willows!
