Very nice area. However, there are a lot of restaurants that have been closed. It's quiet and never too busy or crowded. I love the architecture and the greenery that surrounds this place. The lake is quite large and there are lots to do. From a walk around the board walk, to wine and dine. There is also a Cinemark on the grounds and a few hotels on same this side of lake. You can rent a canoe, boat or jet-skies. Even catch sunset with dinner on a boat. Definitely family oriented, there is not much for the night life. Sure hope that business picks back up, asi would hate to see this place go to waste. Several spots to pick from to eat from a Mexican, Cajun, American and Asian. Parking is a little tuff at times, you will find a spot eventually but you just have to circle around and walk further. They do have valet though, so that's an option. There is not much shaded sitting areas near the water so an umbrella is highly recommended, or a hat, but definitely plenty of sunscreen and water. The scorching summer hot days in Texas will have you screening if you don't. So pack accordingly and plan ahead. read more

Cher: No, she's a full-on Monet. Tai: What's a monet? Cher: It's like a painting, see? From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess. Let's ask a guy. Christian, what do you think of Amber*? Christian: Hagsville. Cher: See? *Replace "Amber" with "the lake", and you get the idea. Yes, she's a mighty fine looking body of water...from a distance. As you gaze out the window of your hoopty, while you blaze a path across the bridge, the setting sun is reflected on the waves in millions of tiny sparkles the likes of which have never been seen (apart from the face of a certain vampirically inclined Edward Cullen of "Twilight" fame). You feel the magic in the evening air and decide to make a detour to visit the tranquil shoreline of its seemingly enchanted and eternal depths (impounded circa 1968). Sadly, after you park and come closer to the edge, the magic starts to fade away. If you live in the area and you like to boat, Lake Ray Hubbard is an option. However, aside from the Yacht Club, fishing, and drinking beer on the dock, that's about all there is to do. I've been out on the lake a couple of times, and one of the times I ended up getting really seasick. Well, to be honest, I'm not sure if it was motion sickness or the 12 Bud Lights I drank, or maybe it was a combination of both. Whatever it was, I ended up hanging my head over the end of the pier and heaving my insides into the lake for about an hour. I was miserable, but the fish enjoyed it. Fat bastards. read more

Richard Q. and I went fishing here Sunday night in one of the buildings/docks behind the bait store. Right before I walked in I noticed two signs that disturbed me : 1. No alcohol on premises 2. Open from 6 AM - Midnight (we arrived at about 9:30 PM and paid $10 each for a fishing license) We decided to continue on with our plans even though we could only fish for a few hours. The dock is pretty old and spider infested but they do provide some lighting and benches which were nice (pictures to come). There were several people already posted up but we found a nice area and got comfy. I haven't been fishing in more than a decade nor do I embrace mother nature very often ( I usually end up getting attacked by some sort of bug) but this setting was tolerable. It's about $8 to fish here per person and man do they jack up the prices of their snacks. I paid $2.50 for a can of lays and $2 for a bottle of water but it was convenient so I just grumbled under my breath and handed over my Master Card. There were all sorts of different people here: a group of teenagers (one wearing sunglasses...in the evening), a family here and there, an old couple and me and my mate. I also saw a giant cockroach or two which was nothing to Richard but caused me to run around the dock...I apologize if this interfered with anyone's fishing. This area is located across from Harbor Point where there must have been something going on because we got to catch the end of a lovely firework show while casting our bait. read more

I have been to many lakes and many lakes have pleased me. Lake Ray Hubbard is not one of them. Granted, I don't own a boat and I don't sit on my yacht and sip champagne while laughing at the poor folk fishing around the lake but nevertheless I feel Ray Hubbard has far to go. We went on a nice, cool evening to the shore nearest I-30 and fished for a few hours. I'll be the first to admit that outdoorsmanship still eludes me but I've read enough National Geo to know the best lakes don't have garbage strung about the shoreline. Then again, maybe attaching an empty coke can to my lure will help bring in the fishes. There may be docks around the lake where people feel more comfortable fishing, but the area we hit was littered with trash and had a definite sewage smell. The most readily available shoreline for fishing is ideal for drug dealers and serial killers, so for them I give Lake Ray Hubbard 5 stars. However, for the average human looking to enjoy an afternoon fishing quietly, I recommend skipping Ray Hubbard and stamp the lake with the 2 stars you see above. read more
