An incredibly mismanaged and poorly run club that is in financial extremis. I was a member for three years and while I enjoyed the golf course and met some very nice people (most of whom were staff, and a fewer number of members), I cannot recommend that anyone join this club.
Over the course of my three years of membership, Lake Mohawk Golf Club went through three executive chefs and after praising two of their hires. Each of these hiring decisions proved to be disastrous as the first walked on the club with no notice and the second resulted in a firing based on false and trumped up charges of theft.
The club's by-laws allow for a maximum of 242 full members; the club currently has approximately 100-105 with the rest being social, weekday and various junior members who don't pay full fees or have full food and beverage minimums. This small number of full members is nowhere near the total needed to keep the club on an even keel financially.
What is surprising about this club is that some of its members are very successful business people and they do serve on the Board of Governors. However, as a Board, they refuse to take the long overdue steps to put the club into something resembling financial stability. As a result, the membership is assessed EVERY YEAR because this club cannot cover its expenses. The immediate Past President was a "his way or no way" dictator who refused to seriously consider suggestions from interested members like myself who offered to step up and perform certain functions such as purchasing supplies for the Greens-keepers, the kitchen, insurance and so on.
In 2019, the food and beverage minimum was increased by 40% with the return of the purchase of alcoholic beverages and snacks counting against the same. Food service to meet this minimum was reduced dramatically with the cancellation of dinner service on Wednesdays, making Friday and Saturday nights (provided there were no outside events such as weddings that would conflict) the only nights members could see full dinner services.
2019 also saw the return of a chef who worked at LMGC more than 20 years previously and while I only ate a couple of his meals prior to my resignation and departure from the club, I found those meals to be nothing more than mediocre fare and grossly over-priced for what one received. The current club menu for both lunch and dinner continues to prove that what is offered is obscenely overpriced.
One of the club's major failings is the belief held by the Board of Governors and long time members that it is something special. It isn't! It is a very short par 70 course INSIDE the gated LAKE MOHAWK community that is not easy to access, especially for members bringing guests to play or dine. Given that the club is inside what is officially known as the LAKE MOHAWK COUNTRY CLUB, I always found it rather surprising that it did NOT have a large membership comprised of those who lived in the gated community. You should ask yourself why not?
LMGC is in dire financial straits and is mortgaged to the eyeballs. I doubt very much if any financial institution will lend them any more money. Should you join now, even with the reduced initiation fees and other gimmicks they utilize to attract members, UNDERSTAND that in September, you WILL RECEIVE an ASSESSMENT letter detailing the club's need to do so and your piece of that pie. It will be, according to the by-laws, 15% of your annual dues. Likewise, should you join this year and the club does NOT survive this severe recession we face as a result of COVID-19, your money and membership will be forfeited.
The sad thing is that the course itself is always well maintained and the greens are spectacular and in summer, UNBELIEVABLY FAST! It is a nice little course for the amount of acreage it occupies, but it is surrounded by houses. Equally sad is that I don't believe it will be around much longer as its financial condition is untenable.
In conclusion: Save your money, time and aggravation. DO NOT JOIN LAKE MOHAWK GOLF CLUB. This house of cards is ready to fall. read more
