There are places in this weary world that seem to have been dreamed up by a benevolent god on one of his better days, and Lake George is one of them. My wife's family has been going there since she was a little girl. When she brought me for the first time, she said, "Just wait until you see it." I did, and I have been waiting to see it again every year since. Now our children wait for it too. It has become one of their favorite places on Earth, which feels like a small miracle considering how full of screens and distractions the rest of the planet has become. The village itself reminds me of a Jersey Shore town that wandered too far inland and got stuck among the mountains. Canada Street is its boardwalk, bustling with arcades that still smell faintly of popcorn oil and ozone, and souvenir shops selling t-shirts, fudge, and wooden signs that promise laughter lives here. The food is overpriced and of moderate quality, but nobody really cares. The ice cream is cold, the fries are hot, and the people seem to be trying very hard to enjoy themselves. That's a noble thing. But the village is not the point. The lake is. Lake George is a long blue miracle cupped in the rough hands of the Adirondacks. The water is so clear you can see straight down to the rocks where the sunlight breaks into singular beams. The mountains stand around it like patient, benevolent giants who have seen every kind of human folly and still choose to protect this place. To be out on the water, really out there, with the motor off and the air quiet except for the call of a loon, is to remember that peace is not a metaphor. It exists. You can touch it. Something strange happened after the world shut down in 2020. When people were told to stay away from one another, they went looking for places that allowed them to be outside yet made them feel alive again. Many in the metro New York area found or rediscovered Lake George. It seemed to benefit in a way few places did, as though its beauty had been waiting centuries for this sudden rush of attention. The result was predictable. More boats, more traffic, more vacation rentals, more zeros on the restaurant bills. The lake became a little more crowded, a lot more expensive, and perhaps a bit less innocent. Still, it endures. Beauty like this can survive anything, even prosperity. Every summer, when we stand on the dock and the sun folds itself behind the mountains, I feel something I cannot name. It is part nostalgia, part gratitude, part disbelief that we are lucky enough to share this view. My children stare at the little waves as the sunlight plays among them, and I think that maybe this is what heaven looks like before the tourists arrive. If you go, do not just visit Lake George. Let it visit you. It has stories older than your country and water cleaner than your conscience. It has a way of making you forget what time it is. That, in the end, is the highest compliment I can give any place on Earth.

Great little city (village?). Brought back memories of my trips to North Conway, NH as a kid 35-40 years ago. Bustling, but not so much so to make you agoraphobic and generally upbeat energy. A little weird in some sense, as there are 2-3 DILLIGAF stores all on the same street, 2-3 mini golf places with a 1/4 of a mile of each other, and 2 arcades within a 1/4 of a mile of each other. Almost bizzarro world like. That said, its an extremely nice area and was a satisfying visit after my steamboat tour.

"I knew George since he's eight I always thought that he was great Hey Bro, what's the word Talkin' 'bout My Friend George" (Lou Reed) It covers 33 square miles at depths reaching 200 feet. It's considered to be one of the clearest and cleanest large lakes in the world. Welcome to Lake George in New York State. You'll find it between Albany and Montreal. A waitress in a Mexican restaurant we just visited told us that during the summer season, the area is "as crowded as Disneyland". It's a summer vacation destination for boating, fishing, camping and recreation, and the views of the gigantic lake are amazing. We visited the lake from a few different entrances and walked a trail around the shore. The views were absolutely gorgeous. Here's a cool quote I found about Lake George. In 1792 Thomas Jefferson wrote it was "without comparison the most beautiful water I ever saw." Hard to top that, isn't it?

    Really beautiful

At Shepherd Park are public parking, municipal amenities, public restrooms, restaurants, and historical sites. The view is pristine of the infamously beautiful & pristine waters. Mini restaurants with decks and expansive views of the gorgeous Swiss-like terrain.

Lake George is a gem up in Adirondack mountains, nicknamed the Queen of American lakes, is listed as the cleanest lake in America. 32 miles long with Fort William Henry, on the Southern end and Fort Ticonderoga on the North. Water sports galore, great for fishing some serious Lake trout, swimming and boating. Just an overall great vacation spot,

Lake George is always beautiful any time of the year. For a fun time go in the summer and try to stay on the lake. Or just on Canada street. Go parasailing, cruising, hit up the million-dollar beach. Nature is just beautiful. There are plenty if souvenir shops near the lake. If you go in the winter enjoy the winter festivities on the frozen Lake! Easy ride there! Go and enjoy.

We had a fabulous day out on the lake. Quite smooth in the morning, we were all about. I know Paradise Bay was one place we stopped for some swimming, then there was a campground near Bear Mountain and then there was some other swimming elsewhere. I wasn't paying attention, I just know that we were up and down the lake all day! Smooth in the morning but by 4 or 5pm, the water got quite choppy. State Police on patrol here and there to make sure that everything stayed friendly. Note that some of the state-owned land does not permit dogs. At one of the coffee stops, you're not even allowed to tie up your boat if you have a dog on board. So keep that in mind. [Review 11505 overall, 1285 of 2019.]

I have previously visited Lake George, NY several times (pre COVID-19 era) and always enamored with this quaint cute village for its scenic landscaping views of Lake. This village is very cozy and romantic for couples. Tourist trap village indeed, but it is worth a long weekend visit experience. The village appears like vintage postcards and very charming. There are boat tours, the fame Lake George steam boat cruise, and Storytown, U.S.A., an amusement park themed to Mother Goose rhymes. As a child Lake George, NY provided nice fond memories of many vacations.

I grew up 1 hour south of Lake George, so I came here a few times each year for day trips. This seems to be a very popular destination for people from NJ for some reason. The village itself is extremely tacky. There are countless t-shirt shops selling offensive t's. Most of the stores are junk shops, but there are a couple of good ones. The village features a couple of ice cream shops and a plethora of restaurants, none of them are what I would consider foodie destinations. I'd try to dine at one of the spots that overlooks the beautiful lake, all of them are very casual. I've done a lot of hiking within 30 minutes of the village. I'd highly recommend Sleeping Beauty, Hadley and Buck Mountain. Be sure to research your trails before you go. I did the Tongue range one early September and we spotted multiple large rattle snakes. About ten years ago, I had the chance to visit a friend's family home on the lake and that's the best way to experience LG. I could certainly see the appeal of coming here and renting a spot right on the water. If you come here in the summer it is obviously crazy busy, but in the winter it's dead and many of the stores are closed. I suggest taking the short stroll from the village over to Million Dollar Beach to get some nice views of the mountains. There are a couple of different boat companies running sailings on the lake. I did this a few years back before moving away from the Albany area, it was nice at sunset. Lake George puts on multiple firework shows throughout the summer, so it's worth checking the schedule and seeing that. I'd consider this place more of a weekend destination, I think it would get boring after that. Be sure to head up to Bolton Landing, there also have a cute main street.

Better than my trip to Mexico! Will be returning! Beautiful lake, Great town. Nice people. No issues whatsoever on this getaway!

I've only been here twice, once last year and this week. Both times were for business and both times in the off season. As a result I can only speak to the off season. Driving through town you find a plethora of shops and restaurants. This time of year nothing is open. You can actually walk down the center of Canada Street/Route 9, and not have to avoid cars because there are none. Most restaurants are closed for the off season. Both time there I ate at the same restaurant only because there were no good choices. As I said I've never been there during the busy season but I can imagine that it would be super crowded and that's not for me. If I'm there on business and getting paid, no problem, but otherwise you won't see me.

We took the red trail all the way to the top and we took the blue trail on the way down (it merges with the red trail). I'm giving four stars because the trail marking are really good, except where they aren't and just disappear for a while or entirely. The red trail is mostly well marked, though there were still times when we just had to keep heading up the mountain because we couldn't find the next marker. On our way down, the blue trail was really, really well marked until it just stopped and we could not find another marker. I'm not a fan of going off trail because I know it can be dangerous and it can be damaging to local ecosystems, but without a clear trail to follow and nearly a mile into the woods, we did the best we could (kept heading downhill and to the right hoping to find the red trail, but eventually finding the road anyway). If you start at the trailhead, you will walk up metal stairs and onto a walkway over the highway. From there, you'll follow the trail about a mile up where you will find a road. Beware of traffic, cross the road, and you'll have another mile to go to reach the summit (you can take red or blue trail) where there is a parking lot and great viewing.
