We had the best time!! They took the time to pair us with the perfect horse based on our riding skills. Everyone was laughing and having a great time; it felt like we were with friends. My 10 year old niece really enjoyed it since she has never been on a horse before but really loves them. She has mentioned she would like to take riding lessons when we get home. We will definitely be booking another trail ride when we make it back to Big Bend and we will try to go for a longer ride since it was so fun. I highly recommend booking.

We went to Big Bend with our foreign exchange students to show them some Texas hospitality. Their most memorable part of the trip was our sunset ride through a bit of history and mountain trail. Our tour guide Bart was awesome! His knowledge and patience made our ride very enjoyable. The horses are very well trained and taken care of. We didn't have any issues with the horses that Bart couldn't talk us through. Definitely worth the money and time.

We had the best time! Dakota was so good with my boys who never rode a horse before. He got them to the point that they are very confident on a horse. That made this trip priceless for me. The lunch was outstanding local BBQ and Dakota's homemade Bean Salad aka Cowboy Caviar was on point! Thanks Again and see you in the Fall for a 3 day overnight trip!

Stayed at the Lajitas Resort but fortunately found this stable to do our ride at! Luckily we came here because it was half the price as the resort charged and the experience was amazing. Did the sunset ride and we were the only ones riding. Guide was funny, kind, and knows horses! Would love to return for another trip one day!

We had the time of our lives horseback riding with Big Bend Stables. We chose the half day with lunch. The desert ride was perfect. My husband is really scared of heights, but the little hills did not bother him at all. These horses are very sure-footed and are pretty much on auto-pilot. All of the horses were well trained and well cared for. We felt safe 100% of the time and our guide, Hailey, was very knowledgeable and caring. She asked everyone multiple times if we were comfortable and if our stirrups felt right. The lunch we were served was delicious and served at a really neat spot-I have pictures of it but I do not want to spoil it so I'm not going to post the picnic spot. This was the best thing we did in Terlingua and well worth the money.

We rode on 9/10 and did the half-day trip from Big Bend Stables in Study Butte. We could not have had a more enjoyable time. Dakota was a personable, friendly & knowledgeable guide. The horses--Geronimo, Whisky & Phoebe (plus Old Jack for Dakota)--were sweet and easy-going, even with Phoebe wanting to take me up a slope faster than the others. Part of the trip included lunch, and it was delicious and abundant. The bean and corn salad was a big hit. Next time, we plan to do the ride on the State Park side. Thanks for a fun and memorable time!

Highly recommend! We booked the two hour trail ride for our family (2 adults, two teens, 10 yr old and 7 year old). It was perfect for us. My 7 year old LOVED it the most and it was her first time on a horse. The ride was just the right pace for us. Horses listened (have been on trail rides where the horses didn't care to follow along ). It was a good mix of up and down some hills, slow pace overall. Scenery was beautiful. Good bathrooms available before we set out on the trail. Make sure to wear sunscreen and sunglasses. The sun can really shine and heat you up so highly recommend layers, too. I would do this ride again. Shelby was a great guide! She took a great family photo of us towards the end of the ride

My hubby signed us up to ride a three hour trail on horseback at the Lajitas Stables, while we were staying in Sweetwater air bnb. This excursion was a lot of fun! My husband hasn't ridden horses in a long time but I have experience in riding horses, just not familiar to the steep terrain of the gorgeous mountains. I learned the terrain through our guide, Armando, he was excellent! Knowing I felt a bit nervous initially, he kept our spirits up and helped me through my concerns/apprehension. He instructed us both on what to expect, showed us which movements to use to turn the horse we were on, and offered some levity when needed so our nerves wouldn't get the best of us. Overall: a wonderful experience had by my hubby & myself! I'm definitely excited to go on another trail ride with this neat horseback riding company! It was quite a fun adventure! Thank you, Armando! You're the Best Guide!
Wow. Mackenzie did a wonderful job guiding and instructing us with our horses. We had a splendid time. We enjoyed it so much that we booked another ride for the same day at the Big Bend Stables (their sister company). read more

It was such an awesome experience. I thought it was going to be a regular horseback ride where we just walk on flat land but we actually went high up on a mountain with a cliff and Evo took some cool pictures! It was so scary but also well worth it once you're at the top. Evo was such an awesome guy and laidback and Azul was such a sweet horse. I definitely recommend doing this if you're ever in Big Bend. read more

I had a very disappointing experience with Lajitas Stables. I had booked a ride and paid a deposit, but the day before our scheduled time, my vehicle got completely stuck in the mud -- we were stranded with no way to drive anywhere, and barely had access to food or water. I called to explain the situation to Montie Mudd, hoping for some understanding or at least a little compassion given the circumstances. Instead, her response was dismissive. She asked where we were staying, and when I said "Terlingua," she replied, "Huh, that's weird... well, I gotta go, my horse just got out." That was the end of the conversation. I completely understand that they have a no-refund policy, but I truly believe that emergencies like this should be handled with a bit more empathy and professionalism. It wasn't about the money -- it was about how casually and rudely the situation was handled. I would recommend being cautious when booking with Lajitas Stables unless you're absolutely certain your plans won't change, because even genuine, unavoidable emergencies aren't given any consideration. read more

Evo was an exceptional horseback riding guide, making our experience both fun and memorable. From the moment we met him, his professionalism and friendly attitude put us at ease, ensuring the ride was both safe and enjoyable. He guided us through some stunning trails, always taking care to check in and make sure everyone was comfortable with their horses. The food he prepared during the ride was a awesome. His passion for what he does really shines through, making the entire experience feel personal and special. Highly recommend Evo for anyone looking to combine adventure with great food and a safe, fun atmosphere. Went this time with my buddies but coming back in the fall with my wife and son! read more

This was such a lovely experience! Our guide Janelle was extremely informative and answered all my questions. The scenery was beautiful and tranquil. The lunch that was provided was delicious, and there was definitely enough for everyone! Willow, the horse I was riding, was a bit stubborn and kept stopping to eat, but otherwise was a pleasure to ride. :) The horses seem well trained and despite the fact that I've never ridden a horse before, this was such a beginner friendly experience. Janelle kept an eye on us the entire ride and made sure we were doing alright. Definitely something I'd want to do again if I'm ever in the area. read more

Amazing time! Our guide Shelby was great and really knowledgeable not only about riding but also each horse's personality. We rode through the mining area and it was fun learning about the history of the region. We also rode through a little canyon/creek and Mesa filled with ocotillos and great views of the Chisos Mountains. The horses are well maintained and trained which made it easy to learn to ride, given that I've never rode a horse before. My horse was named lil John and my husbands was Geronimo- both were great! The lunch was delicious and my husband and I really appreciated the quality of the food and no my having to eat sandwiches. The lunch was smoked chicken (from Rustic Iron), beans, trail mix, crackers and cheese. I couldn't recommend it enough. Just make sure to wear long pants and bring sunscreen. We were at Big Bend Stables, not Lajitas Stables but run by the same people. read more

Our experience with Big Bend Stables was excellent from start to finish. We did the 2 hour sunset ride and had so much fun. The horses were beautiful and clearly well taken care of, Debra at the front desk was kind and funny and Armando was a great guy with jokes in the bag. The ride was very fun and doable even for a first timer like myself. The sunset was absolutely gorgeous and Armando timed it so we were at a picturesque spot right as the sunset got super pretty. Would definitely recommend this activity for anyone. It was very fun and I'd love to ride again if I'm back in the area! read more

Unfortunately I did not go on my ride due to the condition of the horses. We drove by the first evening we were in Terlingua and multiple horses had white marks on their withers from chronic, poor saddle fit. It wasn't just one horse, but at least 6 of them that I saw. They also claim to raise their horses, which takes away an excuse of buying them with those marks. As a horse owner myself, I cannot this. You can't see these marks during the day when they're saddled up for your ride unfortunately. But take a drive by after hours and you'll see. read more

We did the 2 hour morning ride. Have done lots of horseback rides over the years and overall this one was good. There's really not much to see (you're in the desert and they walk you through an old mine, but very little remaining from the mining days). It's in full sun the whole time, so wear sunscreen and a hat and bring plenty of water. We had a new guide who was in training, so with time I'm sure she'll get better and have more knowledge to share. If you're looking for a couple of hours on a well-trained, easy-mannered horse, this is a good option. Please follow directions for arrivals and be respectful of everyone's time. There were two other parties that didn't show up til 9:15 which delayed our departure. You need the full 30 minutes to get signed in, pay balance, get safety talk and saddled. read more

Our group loved the 2-hour sunset ride! The stables are very respectful of COVID-19 guidelines by requiring masks inside the building and while assisting your mount. I was staying in Marfa and the drive to the Big Bends Stable and back was worth it each time I went. The staff was - and I cannot stress this enough - unbelievably accommodating to me and others who were in my cohort. It stormed mid-ride on the first sunset ride I was booked on, so we had to return to the stable for the safety of all riders. Once we were back, our guides did their best to get everyone rescheduled for another ride the following day. I was supposed to leave town the next day, but ended up staying another night so I could attempt another sunset ride and it was more than anything I could have ever hoped for. It was still raining a bit (mid June) but it made the experience more unique. We were lucky to get some rainbows in the sunset cast on Big Bends, which is a breathtaking park. Our guides Hailey and Mando (and everyone else who works here) are very humorous and just exquisitely kind people. I'd recommend this stable to anyone in the area or willing to make the trek out there for a trail ride. Its a scenic drive anyway and if you leave after the sunset ride, you'll catch some stars too ;) read more

We had such a great 1/2 day ride with Hayley on Thursday! The weather started pretty crappy with drizzly rain and mist, but made for a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. They provided much-needed, hooded ponchos that I was so glad to have in addition to my rain jacket. The horses are highly skilled on the rocky terrain and were some of the most well-mannered I've ever ridden! Shandor may have a snacking problem and Phoebe moves to the beat of her own drum, but they were great horses and I chalk any misbehaving up to the rider (read: us!). We stopped for lunch in a beautiful canyon just as the rain let up. It was perfect timing! Hayley unpacked a lovely spread of locally made bbq chicken, cowboy salad, cheese, crackers, olives, and oreos. Yum! We enjoyed great conversation and learned a lot about the desert's flora and fauna as we thawed out and filled our bellies. The remaining part of our ride was much drier and more clear so we could take in the beauty of the surrounding hills and valleys. Even saw an aoudad or so! Overall, it was an amazing experience and a definite stand-out on our Big Bend area trip. Thanks to office manager, Montie, for booking us with a river company for an afternoon Rio Grande canoe trip also! The "Saddle and Paddle" combo is the way to go for a full day's worth of adventure! read more

Awesome moment! We came in Big Bend NP and really wanted to do horse riding. My husband and I hesitated between Lajitas Stables and Big Bend Stables in Terlingua. Our family of 4 rode with Big Bend Stables for a 2-hour ride, and we had a great time. It was the perfect ride and length for beginners. Our guides, Armando and Steve, were funny, engaging, and prepared everything easily for us. There was another family there with younger children, and our guides were especially attentive to them, making them feel very comfortable. Armando gave us a lot of history along the ride, the horses were calm, and because we went in December, the weather was very comfortable. Ideal horseback riding experience. We arrived at the Terlingua location and immediately felt welcome, safe, and attended to. Our guide, Armando, in addition to having a wonderful sense of humor, was patient and thoughtful from the instructions period to dismount. My girlfriend had no prior riding experience, I had some, and others in our group had quite a lot. We were able to take the two-hour sunset ride at a lax pace that suited the entire group. As the weather got questionable, with a storm brewing over Big Bend, we had every assurance that our safety was paramount - Armando told us that if thunder and lightning were to start, we would reroute to the stables immediately and receive a partial refund. Thankfully, it never got above a light rain - we summited the short hill looking west just in time for a glorious sunset, took some cute pictures, and traipsed down the remaining length of trail happy and fulfilled. One of the horses in our group seemed a little jumpy, another one took some ill-timed stops along the tougher ascents - all in all though, these were clearly very well-trained animals who knew the trail perfectly and responded to their riders. I would recommend these stables to anyone at any level of experience who wants to enjoy exquisite Big Bend the way its first visitors once did - on horseback! read more

THE BEST! When you book a trail ride you are never really sure what you are going to get. I will try to break down our experience. The horses - Lajitas Stables has quality, well trained horses who know the rocky terrain. They were truly a pleasure to ride. They are sure-footed and took their time navigating the path. Dakota, our Guide, was fantastic! He told us historical facts about the area, showed us native plants and told us their medicinal uses, and taught us about the native animals. We talked and got to know each other to the point we consider him a new friend! Lunch - the ads were correct, lunch is more than just sandwiches. We devoured smoked chicken, a delicious bean salad that Dakota personally prepared, cheese, crackers, pickles, olives, and apples. We chose not to eat the apples but shared them with our horses for a job well done. We WILL be returning for the overnight ride! If you want to experience the Big Bend Country, horseback with Lajitas Stables is the way to go! read more

Family of 5, youngest is 12. Half day with lunch. Janelle was our guide at the Lajitas stable. There was another group going out at the same time with Armondo and another guide but they spaced us out so we never saw them until lunch. If you are nervous about heights and can't trust your horse, then do the ride at Big Bend stables as Lajitas is not a baby ride. If you want a safe and fun adventure, go to Lajitas. We were staying in the national park and drove further to go to Lajitas and it was completely worth it. Janelle was fantastic, the horses are great (if a little overweight lol). Three of our five had never ridden a horse before but we were provided enough pre-ride training to do so. Lunch was great, and they will work with vegetarian and gluten free guests. When we get a chance to return we will definitely do it again. read more

We visited the stables on May 11. Our guide for the half day trip we took with lunch was absolutely wonderful! Jess was very knowledgeable, engaging, attentive, and interesting. His conversation dramatically and positively impacted the experience. The ride was very scenic and beautiful as long as you enjoy the beautiful mountains, canyons, and desertscapes, as I do. I would recommend taking a ride anytime other tthan May through the summer. Up until about noon, it was comfortable. However, starting at around noon through the end of the ride, it was terribly hot, but no one can control that. Would definitely use this company again on any future trips to the Big Bend area. read more
