    Lots of picnic tables

Decided to take the teenagers to the lake after the wrestling tournament. Although it's a bit chilly today, after a full day of wrestling somehow the kids found a way to get in the water. It's freezing for me so no thank you LOL. We have been camping at this lake for about 15 years now. There are many ways to camp here. There are tons of beaches that you could just Camp with tents or trailers/RV right on the beach or they have some improved camp sites with designated camping spaces. The price is around $8 a night. The first time we came here, it was completely flooded out. We stayed in the improved campgrounds, and over a few days the water came all the way up to our trailer and about a week later it was completely covering the trailer tires. After a year or two, the water level started to recede, and the lake seemed to be drying up. And after a few years we saw a pattern of flooding and then drying up. We tend to camp at this lake mostly when it is flooded. The water seems much cleaner, and there's so much more of it LOL.

    The lake is high.

Need a place to cool off, spend a lazy day? Maybe go boating/fishing & finish your day off with a little fire & some S'mores? This is the spot! I've been coming to Lake Lahontan & camping ever since since I was a kid. Now my own little family joins me. It's nice coming here because, there aren't people EVERYWHERE like at some of the nearby popular lakes. (Lake Tahoe.) Of course, Tahoe has crystal clear snow water. Lake Lahontan has the same snow water, but it's dirtier. It travels all the way down the Carson river. Still yet, we all swim in the lake & have lived to tell the tale! I don't recommend eating the fish here, due to their high mercury content. There are plenty to catch for fun, like bass. You'll see them flop in the lake very often! All in all; if you're searching for a less "touristy," lake & don't mind it being a little muddier, come here. It's the perfect lake to come to & escape from your busy life. You & your family will enjoy it here. PS: Don't forget to bring sunscreen!! It gets hot.

I went on a Monday and was disappointed with the trash people left behind on the main beach area over the weekend. The ranger I talked with says that on Tuesday they have a crew that comes and picks up after folks. My gosh, there were trash bins everywhere. So tacky. As you drive away from the main area though, beautiful water and sandy white beaches, lots of privacy and no trash. I saw lots of American White Pelicans. Please, wherever you go, don't be a litter bug.

I have been coming here since I was a kid fishing with my Dad. I now take my kids here to camp and enjoy the weekend. We have our favorite beaches that we like to camp at. Drive isn't to far. There are little stores for last minute items. And it is inexpensive to stay. One warning though... make sure you have tents, eazy-ups or any other item that my take flight in the afternoon winds tied down otherwise you will be chasing them down later. We have lost floaties and have tent poles break from the winds in the afternoon..

Whenever I visit Nevada I tend to bring my pup here. It's a nice enough area but there are always lots of dead fish on the banks that the dogs like to eat. (Gross) I like that the water has an easy decline and doesn't get deep too fast. It can be a bit muddy so I do worry about the dogs getting stuck. There are lots of picnic tables and grilling areas too. And if you go off season it's free to get in!

My 300th review!!!…read more Water in the middle of the desert? No, wait, a wetland habitat in the middle of the desert? This must be a mirage! Nope, if you've found your way out to Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, that's definitely water you're seeing, along with all sorts of shorebirds, herons, egrets, ducks, owls, hawks and other wildlife coming in for a bit of respite from the harsh environment around it. With most of these types of areas, my first question is always about the quality of the roads used to get around. The roads are all gravel once inside the refuge, but I can tell you that at Stillwater, in dry conditions, a car is perfectly fine. There are no dips or divots in the road a car can't handle, and definitely no clearance issues. Even when the roads are wet, there really isn't an issue. As a national refuge, this is a federally managed wetland project designed to provide habitat and attract and sustain wetland species in Northern Nevada. For birdwatchers, this place can be paradise, with several species calling the area home. The refuge has a great walking trails that take you into some unique habitat, and give you opportunities to see the diversity of wildlife in the area. I've seen all sorts of birds, as well as deer, coyotes, and more. If you have a non-motorized boat, paddling through some of the larger ponds can be a great way to spend an afternoon. They even have overnight campgrounds that are suitable for tents or RVs. I've been coming to Stillwater for the past few years, and with the drought conditions throughout the state, this place has definitely suffered. To put it in perspective, last year there were 3 large areas holding water, and in 2014 they're down to one. I'm hopeful we have a great winter that brings a lot of precipitation that will help replenish our water supply. We all know we need it!

I prefer lots of trees myself, of which there were very few. However it was VERY beautiful and we did enjoy it. There was also a wildlife viewing platform that allowed you to look out on the marshes. The bathrooms were impeccable for the "porta-potty/outhouse" type that most parks have. Talk about clean! wow! It wasn't to terribly hot in November when we went but PLEASE bring water with you, you'll want it. A jacket too if it's in the Winter months.

Our previous camping experience many years ago was not the best, but we did come during the 4th of July weekend, so it was crowded, loud and all around not a good experience. This time however, it was wonderful!! We set-up camp where we wanted and had the area practically to ourselves, serious boondocking. The weather was also perfect, hot during the day and cool during the night. We also got to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. My only gripe would be the mosquitos and even they weren't terrible. Although we didn't leave our campsite this time, we have previously visited many other parts of the lake as well as the Marina. The lake is huge and although not all of it is accessible, there are still many beaches and areas to visit and explore. I also like to stop at the Marina for ice cream. Another must stop is the Museum and Visitor Center, well worth the stop to learn more about the mysterious and rich history of the lake and the Paiute Tribe.

Since it has been receiving little to no water from Walker River since 2011, the fish and the fishing has become obsolete. Walker Lake is a natural lake in the Great Basin. It is 11 miles in length and only 5 miles wide. At its deepest, it is 68 feet. History tells us many years ago that the Northern Paiutes ancestors inhabited the area around the lake and depended on the fish and birds it provided to live. Through the Walker Basin Restoration Program they were able to deliver water to the lake in 2019 for the first time and they aim to restore Walker Lake to a state where it can house fish and birds again. I hope this comes true. We enjoyed our lunch stop overlooking this beauty.

Walker River has cut through the canyon over many, many years resulting in the natural beauty we have now. The coolest part about it, to me anyway, is the fact that once you're on the trail and you go up, over, and down, you're standing in what used to be an ancient lake from millions of years ago. It's interesting to just stand there in between the mountains and see the geologic history that surrounds you. The main trail here is a 3.2 mile loop that begins at the trailhead in the parking lot and goes along the river before taking you up to a lookout where you can see a vast chunk of the Valley below you. It really is a spectacular site to see. There are other side trails as well. One of which will apparently take you to a petrified forest, but I can't personally vouch for this as I've never done it or found it. Do keep in mind that this particular area of Wilson Canyon is closed off to anything motorized. This trail is strictly for hiking, equestrians, etc. If you want to use your dirt bike or quad here, go to the other side of the road where you'll find sand hills abound. Please respect this area. I've seen people ignoring this rule way too many times. Remember to leave no trace, take nothing but photographs, don't feed or harass the wildlife, and stay on the established trails.

Serendipitously, we happened through on a Tuesday which for some reason is free. Although that didn't make much sense to me, I needed to use the restrooms so we headed in. As other reviews have mentioned the roads are terrible and it's not just the bumpy pothole mess that you come to get used to in this area of the country, it's steep drop-offs from semi-paved gravel roads to dirt roads That will definitely damage your car if you are not paying attention and driving very slowly. We pulled in as far as we could and there were lots of people with trucks and trailers that had ATVs and dirt bikes. There was also a lot of garbage everywhere and when I tried to use the restroom it was flooded and full of flies. We checked out the dunes and left. I can see how the people who are really into off-roading might find it worth it to come here especially if they come a lot and they have an annual pass but for passersby or people who are just in the area, it's definitely not worth the $40.
