Spent a year down in Lafourche teaching at one of the high schools. It was an experience unlike any other I'll ever have. Adjusting to the cajun culture was rough (they aren't always the most welcoming of outsiders, though many are), and it was not easy being in a rural area that lacked some of the amenities and conveniences I was accustomed to--the closest city (Houma or Thibodaux) was at least 30 minutes away.
Still, it was beautiful country--and, of course, great food and music as the bayou is famous for. Although it was eventually time to return to the yankee "civilization" (aka anything above the Intracoastal Waterway), I think back fondly on the experience and appreciate the simplicity of the lifestyle. I still keep up with many of the students I had and am proud of what so many are doing wit demselves. read more
